NiNES: A Broken Galaxy

OOC: TerrisH, you will die. I knew you were scum the moment you tried tech extortion. :p

Year 4

As all known factions were now in contact with at least one other faction, information trading soared to unprecedented heights. Tech-for-tech, tech-for-gold, map-for-map, selling of contact information, trading cartels, sticks and carrots, trades promised but not fulfilled, embargoes and espionage. It was as if humankind's ingenuity had been lying dormant for all those years, just waiting for the opportunity to arise. And when it did, everything seemed to happen at once.

Much the same thing could be said about colonization. Where last year saw a single colony constructed, this year saw three, with four more colony ships being built. The galaxy is rapidly becoming a crowded place, again. And where borders are close, tensions are bound to rise.

(Democrat colony at Delta Pavonis, Emergent colony at Chara, Shuurai colony at Kapteyn)

Exploration continued at a leisurely pace, with the Nekomi once more taking the lead position. Coming into contact with ships from both the Furians and the Democrats at the same time, they now have contact with all but two known factions.

(Nekomi-Furian, Nekomi-Democrats contact)

The Shuurai were becoming increasingly wary of their cat-fancy neighbors and were setting up a veritably wall of asteroids to block the Nekomi from entering Kapteyn from the Rana direction. There was only one problem with it - the attack didn't come there.

Random (not-so-)mini-spotlight

The Nekomi ships came in formation. Corvettes guarding the corners, fighters released to take position along the flanks, all protecting the transports and the Yamoto Carrier in the middle. As they exited the gate from, they found to their dismay that the Shuurai forces were already waiting for them. Premonition, covert channels, or plain and simple paranoia, whatever it was didn't matter much. The import thing was that they were there. What would have happened had the Shuurai not commissioned those two Vantage class destroyers for defense, we will never know. But again, they were there, and not much else matters.

The asteroid-mounted defense systems were the first to give fire on the invaders, targeting the corvettes first in order to protect their own fighters. In this low-tech era of crappy bullet throwers, unaimed lasers and missiles flying wide, most shots of course did not hit. But considering the general state of defense systems, those that did hit did all the more damage. The front-right wing corvette quickly took several hits to the side and was out of fighting condition almost before the fight started. The others took hits as well, as did the transports in their undefended bellies. The damages were quickly avenged though as the Nekomi fighters got in close to one of the defense posts and took it out. Three of the fighters went down in the process, eating into the Nekomi numbers. Still, there were many of them left, and passing by the initial defenses they were close to getting out in the clear, away from the gate. That's when the Shuurai fleet joined the fray.

With three corvettes still chasing along the outskirts of the Nekomi formation, the fighters would be at risk to get too close, so it was up to the destroyers to move in and draw fire. The fighters came in their wake, using the cover of both ships and asteroids in order to get cover while moving closer, and taking out Nekomi fighters attacking the destroyers. The corvettes alone would be no match for the destroyers, so the Nekomi had no choice but to break formation and letting the Yamato Battle Carrier lose. From there it was mostly a slug fest, with little tactics involved. Both sides were fairly evenly matched, and had it not been for the defense systems that were still up and firing into the rear of the Nekomi fleet, the invaders might have won the day. But they were, and so they didn't.

When the exospheric particle dust settled, what was left of the Nekomi fleet was fleeing back to the gate, still fired upon by the defense systems and harried by the defending fighters. The Yamato Carrier, the first of its kind, wasn't going to return home, thus dooming any remaining fighters as well. One of the transports had been shot down as well, and only one corvette was still flying. But the defenders were not much better off. Both destroyers were still up, but only barely so. One of the Nekomi fighters, seeing the Yamato Carrier go down, had rammed right into the bridge of one of them, taking it effectively out of order. The other had taken the blunt of the attacks from the Yamato carrier and wouldn't be able to fly home to base on its own accord, although its weapon systems were still functional. Of the 65 fighters entering battle, only 13 remained, having fallen prey to the corvettes and the suicide attacks of stranded Nekomi fighers. Still, they won, and not much else matters.

OOC:

A new record for stories, 20 this time, requires a new record for celebrations. This time you got 2 PP banked. Where will it end I wonder? :thanx: ;)

Maps and tech info tomorrow as usual. No need for a scapegoat this turn, everyone handled it quite nicely. :)

Also please, all of you, look through your stats. There were several errors in the stats from last update that were only discovered when you sent in orders. In particular check the locations of ships, that's where it is by far the easiest for me to do errors (did anyone say use fleets? ;))

@Iggy: It will take (standard travel) time and require ships for towing to get the derelicts back home. You got the invested PP banked for now.

OOC: TerrisH, you will die. I knew you were scum the moment you tried tech extortion. :p
Read the stats before the update was posted eh? ;)

Btw, the listed negative numbers for ships represent the damages, and are the costs for bringing them back up to shape.

The Nekomi scum have shown their true ambitions of domination by their unprovoked and unwarranted attack on the system of Epsilon Eridani via Sol. It is now clear that their aim is domination of the entire Core region. We ask that you immediately move to evict all Nekomi personnel from your system due to their flagrant abuse of neutral territory in launching their attack on us and offer to extend corporate security to Sol with the aim of protecting it from their aggressions. Should you refuse we will take all appropriate actions to remove their space forces from Sol System ourselves.

To the Evil ones:
CC everyone else.
The Age of corperate States Is at an end. they brought about the down fall of civilization once befor, we will not let them do so again.

OOC:
Truly, It's simple logistics. your traits are to powerfull. You eather have to be ocupiied for 6-7 turns, or eliminated, or by mid game, there will be nothing to stop you. besides, I'm just reacting to your negitive trait! ^_^

Oh, and Niklas, you eather forgot to list the tech, or forgot to include the corrvetts.

For your betrayal of the noble aim of the reconstruction of humanity by waging war in these difficult times, and for your constant attempts to subvert its form to some twisted paradigm, we hereby declare unrestricted warfare on your systems.

So are we all receiving these comms or only those who have contact with the said factions? :hmm:

Oh, and Niklas, you eather forgot to list the tech, or forgot to include the corrvetts.
Explain that to me again please, I don't understand. And if it's not for the the benefit of all to hear, please do so via PM.

So are we all receiving these comms or only those who have contact with the said factions? :hmm:
Only those who have contact. Unless those who have contact decide to pass it on that is.

Well it did say wideband so I just assumed scientishly. :p Anyway oooo war...

Hey Niklas I was wondering if we could get a graphic tech tree? Easier to remember those sideways techs.

Both Dis and I have copies of our tech trees in some graphic form or the other. Drop me an MSN line if you're keen.

OOC: Who just gives away that kind of information for free? And your people are supposed to be elitists! :p

That's the good thing about Visio. I can chop and change the techs to reveal what I want to reveal.

Plus, if you're good-looking enough, I'm sure you're smart enough ;)

Nice update Nik.

The Democratic Autarchy of Huris places its support behind Shuurai Heavy Industries. If humanity is to thrive, it is not through costly wars.

I beg to differ...

Nothing secret.
Directly from my orders:
(20) Research into Burst Lasers. (if not possible, 5 Corvettes at Sirius)
Ah, sorry, fixed. But it's not about if it's secret or not, it's whether it should clutter up the thread or not. Please use PMs for pointing out errors.

Hey Niklas I was wondering if we could get a graphic tech tree? Easier to remember those sideways techs.
I don't have one to give out. I wish I had Visio, Paintshop Pro 7 doesn't do charts very nicely. I'll see if Dia's Windows clone is any good, it would sure be good for me to have a chart too. But I'm not sure I will hand them out in any case, it means more work for me which means slower updates, and it removes the fun you have in drawing your own trees. :D

Yay, update! :D

[edited due to moderator remark]

Germanicus, do tell me what's going on, will you? ;)
