No Parole for Canadian Mercy-Killer

I don't think there's any 'what if' about it. That's exactly the situation. The little girl in question was in such dire straits that no conceiveable medical progress in our lifetime could have made any significant difference.

Medical breakthroughs happen, but not on that scale, not by a longshot.

That was exactly my point. I just like rhetorical questions :D

As far as I can tell, and barring some incredible and completely unconceivable medical advance, there was no hope for this little girl of living a life free of even reasonable amounts of pain.

We have the right to put those severely mentally handicapped people down. They can't live a life and probably don't understand anything anyway. Best send their particles or whatever on to the next deserving thing.

Again, I don't tend to think of this as an issue of being handicapped (other than that she had little in terms of being able to choose her fate), but more of one of quality of life. I think that the vast majority of people we deem 'mentally handicapped' can live full, happy and productive lives. I'm not sure I could say the same for someone who lives every day inagony with no end in sight...

like i pointed out before, he had already waited over a decade. this wasn't some snap decision. if he'd wanted to bail out of responsibility, he would have iced her shortly after she was born; not years later.

Another good point. He obviously didn't take this decision lightly, and after a decade of caring for his daughter and trying to improve her life, I don't think that anyone can make the cliam that he was just trying to shirk his responsibility....
