Nominate National Meals

English Breakfast, Fish and Chips, Roast Beef and Yorkshire's or Curry.

Superficially -

France - Frogs and Germany - Sausages. Along with the Roastbeefs we actually refer to each other by our national dishes...

Spain - Ham

Sweeden - Meatballs

Switzerland - Fondue

US - Burger and fries, supersized.

China: so many choices I can't decide.

The Aussie Meat Pie would have to be at the top of our list.

BBQ (steak, sausages, seafood), fish 'n chips (of course) and chicken parmagiana (for a pub meal) would all come in as pretty popular seconds.

The great majority DONT serve hot dogs, and its hardly an american food since its not native to america.

If anything fast food is american. The whole fast food industry started here and thats where its most prevelant.

funny, I always thought that you can't get much more american than hot-dogs, it's basically america made into a meal :)

Its so famous that once our prime minister asked those who live oversea what they missed the most and this is their answer.

Its greasy fried flat rice noodle with blood cockles, black sauce and chinese sausage. The most important ingredient is that it is fried in pork lard and it will give it the distinct greasy taste :D

Okay, since this thread has slipped onto the second page I think it's time to make the final nominations. Now I was trying to make them relietivly even in how much they include, so sometimes I had to cut down on how much was offered, also some suggestions were not specific enough so I didn't pay attention to them, and some countries had very similar nominations so I couldn't use them both. Anyway, can everyone live with this list?:

Canada: Pancakes covered in syrup, (real syrup from maple trees, not that cheap Aunt Jeremiah crap) and back bacon.

Ireland: cabbage, boiled potatoes and corned beef.

Sweden: Meatballs with brown sauce and mashed potatoes, served with lingonberry jam

France: Boeuf Bourguignon

Germany: Fried sausages with fries/chips

New Zealand: Fish and fries/chips, and pavalova

Italy: Thin and crispy Pizza.

Russia: Borshch and pelmeni, both with sour cream, and black bread.

South Korea: Kimchi, bulgogi with rice.

Japan: Sushi and noodles

Mexico: Steak fajitas.

Spain: Paella, Hake and cocido

Philippines: Tapsilog

Singapore: Char_kway_teow

And the nominations for USA had trouble deciding between fast food and steak. The choice is between; 'T-Bone steak, corn on the cob and fries/chips;' and Burger, corn on the cob and fries/chips. I'll leave it up to the next poster exclusivly.

How about some mutton and Guinness instead?

Italy: Thin and crispy Pizza.

Can't compete with a cacciatore.

Neither, it's barbeque. A Taino word for an American meal.

But really, it's ridiculous to lump the entire United States into a single national dish. North Carolina can't even decide on a single kind of barbeque which represents the state.

I believe that any "Best dish" list that omits China and France is not very meaningful...
