Now THIS is a bad start!

Hi guyz! Easter time, reply time, update time... all in one!

New York: well, it's not different if i retake it now of 2/3 turns from now. Anyway, lesson learned, other cities are cranking american slaves. Fooled once, shame on you. Fooled twice...

About culture, answers are already given. No cultural benefit from captured wonders :(

Abegweit: (and this is also an answer to Coolio): my current cultural value is less than 15000 points. Yes, cultural 100k isn't an option at all.

Shadow: ok. BTW, the same argument may be given. It's too far away. Not worth the troops employed and the time wasted.

Damnyankee: thanks! About the celts story, well, i guess you should ask that guy...

1445AD - The unstoppable Roman Army

Forte Adriano is founded. From there, the roman cavalry charges toward Arbela. The city is size 6 now, probably because of a draft. Bob, you fool! You ditched the 50% defense bonus for a lousy conscript rifleman... anyway, those pukes have reinforced. Two veteran rifles and 1 conscript were present. The capture cost me 2 cavalries, but none of the survivors suffered significant damage. A fine iroquois slave has been captured.

18 more tiles annexed so far. 714 owned, 145 to go. 123 including New York in the count.

tR1ckyBS060.jpg

A pop unit in Arbela is still persian. Good. There are 3 iroquois resistors, and 2 productive units. A worker is started. No troops are moved for now. I reserve troop movements for the end of the turn, i need to know exactly how many available units i have.

On the eastern front, the settler popped from Uruk is babylonian. He assimilated the only iroquois pop and now the residents are all babylonian. The settler moves on the spot and build Forte Commodo. The artillery moves through the claimed territory to the mountain NW of Ur, escorted by riflemen. The army and some cavalry divisions follow.

tR1ckyBS061.jpg

4 workers have been sent with the shipchain. A 2nd rail tile is completed in the New World. In the core, 4 more cities have been connected. Workers are rushed in Oka and Kaname. Walls in Forte Nerone and a temple in Susa. The turn ends. Some cavalries are sent harassing my troops. 1 mounted unit killed and another redlined. On the enemy side: 2 cavs killed and 2 redlined.

1450AD: First cultural expansion in a city of the New World. Persepolis has just become rank 2. More tiles claimed: 728 owned, 131 to go.

Cannons bombard Ur, doing little damage. The army attacks and kills a rifle. Then the rest of my units charge. At the end of the fight, Ur is captured. Defenders killed: 2 riflemen, 1 cavalry, 1 spear, and 1 frigate sunk. Roman casualties: 1 unit dead, 3 weakened, the army at half strength. There are 3 enemy workers that have been caught pants down on the open plain. The army capture them. The slaves are all 3 babylonians.

The countdown is down once again. 739 owned, 120 to go.

Troops are moved as reinforcements. All the remaining cavalries are moved in Arbela and Forte Adriano. The shipchain is shifted north, and this means no reinforcement from the mainland this time. The 2 spared galleons are sent to Persepolis. From there, a possible invasion of the southern colonies is possible. In the mainland, worker have almost connected Nuova Roma, the new startpoint of the ship line.

1455AD - Dogpile

Abe has declared on the Iroquois. While this foolish action may weaken him, and this is good seen in perspective, now Bob is gifted by some war happiness points. I don't know if these negative points are subtracted for the ww he still have, although uneffective due to monarchy, or are counted separately.

Ashur has reached rank 2 now, claiming a few more tiles. Babylon and Pasagardae will follow next turn. The count is now: 745 tiles owned, 114 to go, 93 including New York.

My next objective should be St.Regis, Tonawanda and Akkad. Once secured those 3 cities, my advancement in the iroquois core can stop, unless some city flips. The iroquois have reinforced, i see it. No more obsolete units are spotted, only riflemen defending and cavalries harassing. And i'm a little short on troops at the moment. My advancement has been too effective... too much troops to be deployed.

About Ur, it's too flip prone to maintain, and the front would be too spread away. I'm thinking about giving it to the Americans, but now they're at war with the Iroquois so the city will probably be captured anyway. At this point, it's better to offer it to Persia.

Hi Mario. Although weak, you still are quite useful to me, thanks. And in appreciation for such utility, i award you with the city of Ur. Try to hold it at least for a few turns, ok?

Two cavalries, two cannons and 1 rifle are kept on the mountain NW of Ur, should Bob retake it too early. Wounded troops are moved to Babylon, where barracks are rushed. Other rush: temples in Oka and Forte Nerone, workers in Kaname and Arbela. That last rush is immediate and costs me 80 golds, but i need the necessary workers to have the road connecting Tonawanda completed in 1 turn.

One cavalry and 3 riflemen are sent with the shipchain. Troops are moved toward Akkad. Tonawanda will be the next target. About St.Regis, some units need to be healed first. Here's a map of my planned advancements.

tR1ckyBS063.jpg

1460AD - Triple attack

Nothing relevant happened in the interturn. Babylon and Pasagardae have expanded. Domination count: 743 owned, 116 to go.

With Babylon expanding, the attack on St.Regis can be speeded up: only 1 enemy tile to be traversed before the attack. A bombarding stack moves in the plains south of the city. Meanwhile, the Akkad stack has reached the position for the bombardment. The 2 towns will fall in the same turn.

Cavalries from Arbela and Forte Adriano are sent with the stack. I don't want them to be with zero movements left once they attack, they'll be better garrisoned immediately in the town to quell resistors. Some units are left in the iron tile east of Arbela to prevent nasty surprises.

The mounted units currently stationed in Babylon won't be enough to ensure a victory at St.Regis, but some cavalries have just been trained in the core. They are sent with the shipchain and, thanks to the new railroad built, they arrive in the Babylonian area in time to be used next turn.

Rush work: a library in Miami, a worker in Seattle, 2 riflemen in the core cities.

Finally, Ur is still in Persian hands. That rifleman defending at 13.5 will be hard to kill...

I end the turn. Cavalries are sent attacking my 2 bombard stacks, but are repealed. Another try to annoy my insurance stack outside Susa. Repealed. Forte Cesare and Forte Augusto have reached rank 2. More tiles under my control. 111 left for the domination limit.

Akkad is bombarded and captured. 2 veteran rifles, 1 regular and 2 cavalries were in the town. I lost 2 units and some others are damaged. Those harassers could have been better kept in the city for defense, my attack would have been repealed! Good for me. Alas, Tonawanda is rank 4, and this means that it's completely blocking any communication from Akkad to the rest of my cities. That stinking town must be captured ASAP.

St.Regis fell too, and strangely its defenses were not that much. 1 veteran rifle, 1 musket, 2 pikes and 2 wounded cavalries. Casualties: 1 cavalry lost and some wounded. Troops are moved to defend the town. The good news are that the army wasn't necessary for the fight, and so it can be redeployed to Forte Adriano to be used in the attack of Tonawanda next turn. Meanwhile, the worker stack due to build a road west of Tonawanda is sent, escorted by rifles of course!

Countdown: 767 tiles owned, 92 to go. 71 counting New York. Victory could be only a few turns away from now.

Ur is still Persian, and i cannot but be pleased of that. In the core, rail building continue. More cities are connected each turn, and now the rail has almost reached the former american territory.

Rush work: temples in Oka and Forte Commodo, workers in Susa and Forte Caligola, walls in Uruk and some minor stuff around.

More units are sent to the New World. 2 cannons and 2 riflemen. Another rail line has been built and the cannons can be sent to reach the worker stack of Tonawanda. A minimal bombard force could be useful.

At the end of the turn, this is the situation at the front:

tR1ckyBS064.jpg

In the interturn, some enemy frigates come from the north and sink my unit sent in support of the bombardment in Akkad. A cavalry redlines a rifleman defending Forte Commodo but dies. Susa has expanded to rank 2. 90 tiles short of domination.

The worker stack completes its road to Tonawanda. Cannons bombard, and the wall of Tonawanda are destroyed! Cavalries attack. 2 damn conscript are present! A cavalry is killed, and the army must be sent to finish the job. The city is mine, and cultural pressure on the frontline cities is almost non-existent now.

The countdown is adjusted again. 785 tiles owned, 74 to go. 53 if New York is included. It wouldn't be a bad idea to found another fort between Tonawanda and St.Regis. It will add a reinforcement line and claim a few more tiles.

I think that the offensive in the Iroquois mainland is over. But St.Regis and Akkad are quite prone to cultural flip, and from next turn Tonawanda will be too. I need to keep insurance troops parked around. Troops are redeployed as needed.

Cannons are sent with the shipchain. Rush works: a settler in Akkad, 3 cavalries in the core cities. The rail line has finally connected the ex-american cities till Washington.

Ur is still in the persian hands. Good job, Mario. Keep it up!

Here's a full screenshot of the "hot zone" taken at the end of 1470AD, before the interturn.

tR1ckyBS065.jpg

YAY!!! you control almost all of the iroquois' southern area. but thats just thier conquored land. the hardest part is still to come.

I smell a Domination Victory in a few turns......

Ola! I've played the whole day... being near the victory made me play with even more 'addiction' than usual.

Now 2 short replies:

Coolio: the hardest part will be left alone, i intend to attack the weaker part now (the islands). They'll provide enough tiles to reach the limit.

Falcon: you smell right... ;)

--------------------------------------------

1475AD - Preparing the final move

No city has defected. Uruk has espanded to rank 2. 3 more tiles are claimed. 71 to go. At this point, my empire is big enough to rely only on New York and the southern islands to achieve domination. Stack of insurance troops will be maintained outside Akkad, Tonawanda and St. Regis. A fort is about to be founded in order to claim a few more tiles. Forte Caligola is to be abandoned next turn (it doesn't provide tiles control anymore). Apart from that, no further activity will be enacted on the iroquois core.

3 galleons are already parked in Persepolis to transport the necessary troops.

Since all the excess cavalries need to heal, nothing special is done this turn. Rush work: temples in Arbela and Akkad. Workers in Forte Caligola and Seattle. 3 cavalries and 1 rifle are sent with the shipchain.

The turn ends.

In the interturn, the Iroquois recapture St.Regis. A cavalry redlined the lone defender. Another one killed it. The pop of St.Regis dropped from 10 to 8. Two damned riflemen drafted. I'll need some extra cavalries to deal with those pesters.

tR1ckyBS066.jpg

On the good side: Oka and Forte Nerone have reached rank 2. A bit more tiles for me. And no city has defected.

First, let's recapture St.Regis. No less than 2 cavalries and 2 conscript rifles are present. Cannons bombard the city. The veteran cavalry is damaged at 2/4 and a drafted rifle shows up. No more damage is done, but 3 pop units are killed and the city is now size 5. No more defense bonus for those pukes.

The 2 cavalries attack, killing both the conscripts. Two more units are sent attacking, and the 2 remaining cavalries (both damaged) are killed. St.Regis is recaptured.

Since i have nothing else at the moment, i send some peons with the shipchain to speed up rail construction on the New World. But i'll have a nice bunch of cavalries next turn. All the income is spent into rushing things. Workers in Akkad and Tonawanda are rushed immediately (80 gold each). A city size 1 cannot draft!

All the cavalry units available are moved into St.Regis, in an effort to quell immediately the resistors. Forte Caligola is abandoned. Another 'calm' turn ends. Only 64 tiles are left for world domination.

In the interturn, some cavalries try to recapture Tonawanda, but the defender garrisoned in the town resists valiantly. Another frigate come harassing.

1485AD: workers are rushed again in Akkad, Tonawanda and St.Regis. The rail line between the New World cities is almost complete. Only Arbela and Akkad are left out at the moment. In the Old World the rail line is pratically complete.

New reinforcement are arriving. 4 cavalries are sent through the shipchain. Now i have exactly 12 cavalries available for the invasion of the southern island. 3 galleons are awaiting in Persepolis, and it's time to fill them. The mounted units are moved to Persepolis and loaded into the boats all but one. The remaining free slot is taken by a rifleman. The troops are unloaded on the saltpeter hill north of Antioch. Next turn the final attack will take place.

In the shot: the next war theatre.

tR1ckyBS067.jpg

What happened to the 2-city island? I guess they flipped back to Iroquois, but I missed it.

I wonder if you could demand New York as tribute from Abe? It is awfully far from his capitol...

You might be able to demand some cities from the Iroquois for peace, too.

I stand corrected on the gifted island city.

great story. the reason i went back from regent to warlosrd was to have a quick conquest. Now i have started a monarch game as the romans. :king: :king:

Hi Puppeteer! The 2-city island is still loyal:

tR1ckyBS068.jpg

Oka and Kaname have been stripped from all the nationals (except for one) and have built a temple. About New York, it's difficult that a size 6 city containing a wonder will be handed over, anyway it's more fun to capture it. :D

The same can be said with the 3 iroquois city on the 4-city island

jafink thanx! And good luck with your game!

Wow, the 2-city island on the minimap looks purple even in that last screenshot. Oh, it's probably a result of shrinking the map for posting here and downsampling some sea in with the bright red.

Oh yeah, the wonder. Yeah, I doubt the AI AS would cheerfully hand over Copernicus' Observatory no matter how useless it is to them and how dire their situation is.

And with railroads it's not like it's going to take several turns of troops to take it back and then send the troops to the new world. Okay, seige on New York!

You've got some serious bloodlust going there. I think you'll have to start another story game when you finish this one...

It's a small strip of land, almost invisible on the minimap. It's visible on the super-magnified map on page 20.
Bloodlust. hmmm, probably it will be the title of the next chapter...

1490AD - Bloodlust

In the interturn, some more pesters came, but with little damage for me.

Forte Commodo and Kaname have expanded to rank 2, and Seattle is rank 3. Forte Caligola is founded on the spot between St.Regis and Tonawanda, claiming a little more tiles. 51 tiles left for world domination, and i still have to attack the iroquois settlements on the 4-city island.

My first target is Antioch. Size 4, built on plains, defended by a regular rifle. The frigate bombards and weaken it at 2/3. The same rifle remains visible! A cavalry attacks, kills it and walks into the city. Defenses were way weaker than expected.

Now it's Tarsus turn. A cavalry approaches and scouts a regular rifle defending the city. It attacks and redlines the defender, but the valiant unit is killed. The 3rd unit approaches and see a veteran pike. Defender killed, attacker redlined. The redlined rifleman is now visible, and it should be the last defender. The 4th unit disposes of it and captures the town.

7 cavalry units are left. Enough for Niniveh.

The 5th spots a regular rifle. Defender killed, attacker redlined. A elite cavalry at 3/5 is visible. The 6th unit attacks and kills it. A knight at 3/4 shows up. The 7th unit destroy it and walks boldly into the town!

Tiles left: 21.

tR1ckyBS069.jpg

Next target: New York.

First, an investigation. The city is starving and its defensive forces are limited: 2 regular rifles and nothing else. I have only 4 cavalries in the continent, but can send 4 more from the New World with the shipchain. War is declared.

tR1ckyBS070.jpg

First charge: defender at 2/3, attacker retreats redlined.

Second charge: defender at 2/3, attacker killed.

Third charge: defender redlined, attacker killed damn it!

4th charge: finally one of those suckers manages to kill an enemy. Defender killed, attacker redlined.

I send the army with the shipchain, just to be sure. That damn redlined rifle resists again and tears off 4 hp from the army, but is killed at last! New York is recaptured. Tiles to go: zero.

Free cavalries in the 4-city island are sent in Niniveh and Tarsus. The rifleman is moved to Antioch. Now, if no city defects...

The culture ratio (aliens/humans) is 1.21

The cities at risk are:
[pre]Tonawanda (5)
Forte Caligola (4)
Akkad e St.Regis (too much to be controlled)[/pre]

I should have left undefended Akkad and St.Regis. With my insurance troops i could have recaptured them easily this turn, and the domination victory would have been almost sure. Anyway, i put in safety Tonawanda and Forte Caligola, and hope for the others.

An extra rifleman is placed in Akkad and St.Regis to prevent recaptures. Now, the only thing left is to end the turn...

And the game ends. Domination win in 1495AD.

tR1ckyBS071.jpg

That's what I'm talking about! You've come a long way from that little 2-city peninsula hemmed in by the Egyptians (remember them?) Congrats on your victory. And thanks for an entertaining walkthrough as well.

Just out of curiosity, when did you feel like you had 'turned the corner?' I usually reach a point in my games (typically in the Middle or early Industrial age) when I can tell I'm going to win. I may get slowed up on the way, but it just seems inevitable. You were really rolling those last few turns. When did you get a sense that the game was just yours for the taking?

Hehe! It was incredibly addictive to play this game. Thanx dudes!

Grogf: i felt that i had good chances to win after the capture of Athens (280AD) - but i wasn't sure. After the complete assimilation of the Old World i was certain. Iroquois were doomed to fall, the only uncertainity was how much hard to beat would they have been. Bob screwed up quite a bit in staying in Republic for so long time, and my final victory was faster than expected.

Puppeteer: i won't start another one immediately. Writing this log has been terribly time-consuming! I've been always short of sleep in those days! Probably i'll start a log on a different challenge, say a super-fast domination attempt on a standard map, or a spaceship launch as early as possible, but i don't know if i'll have the force to write a detailed log like this one.

At the moment i'm doing some extra installations to resume the game. But probably i will post some of them tomorrow.

Seeya later guyz!

EDIT: I had a chat with Turner some days ago. This thread was to be moved in the Stories and Tales once the game was finished. So expect to see it moved quite soon.

The histograph has been interesting. The start points are really crazy! Babylon expanded fairly at the start, but then went into war with Persia and Iroquois, and wasn't able to withstand both of them. And so it faced a slow but steady decline.

In the final part of the game i have experienced a devastating expansion, thanx also to the dumbness of Bob. I won the game in 388 turns.

Here's the game progression:

tR1ckyBS072.jpg

And the final turn: (1495AD)

AW come on tricky finish it out!!! and BTW can you post a save of like your final turns i wanna play!! lol, but seriously great thread im looking forward to any others you do!

damn man, I read all this today and I am impressed!
congrats on the victory!
