nvm

I dont see these forums as a replacement for actual social contact, more like a small supplement. Plus these forums can be rather informative or enlightening...sometimes.
Give the man a prize.

I'm mostly here to spam between breaks and on the weekends. I only picked this place because I used to lurk in the civ4 section.

43 posts?

That aint spamming.

There are people who don't care about ego at all. The funny thing is, the people who do care about ego will claim that such people are deluding themselves.
It's all about image & appearing cool.

I think most people who post in the political threads and such (myself included) are absolutely there for nothing but the ego boost. Their only motivation is to be right and have other people be wrong.

On the contrary, I think a discussion is most enjoyable when everyone is right and merely exchanging some views. It gives me hope, as well as more information. When people are wrong, you probably won't be able to convince them anyway. So what really matters is what you take away from it, not what others are like.

whatever happened to thesis, antithesis and synthesis?

Whatever you say about the "ego" part of forums you could say about any social interaction whatsoever. People do the same stuff in real life all the time; doesn't mean people don't share or learn from each other. The forum is a community with regular members, who have reputations and known positions among each other, just like any other community.

I learn quite a bit here, especially from the military types and the internationals who talk about their countries and regions. Better yet, people here are focused on interesting discussions, so you can skip all the small talk and get straight to the point. It's like having a big group of friends just to talk about interesting stuff, which is maybe why it's addicting...no problem with that. If you don't waste time in silly threads, it can be a learning experience.

What, do you think I'm 100% Marxist?

Besides, there is hardly any synthesis after thesis and antithesis on an internet forum. The argument just drags on circularly and ad hom invariably enters the picture.

a)no, but i think that's one of the things you have to pick up from marxism.

b) also, i wasnt so serious, because... well, it's an internet forum. :p

I don't know. To agree with that, one has to be somewhat Hegelian. I don't agree with Hegel at all. I prefer Schopenhauer's account. The original Hegelian dialectic is interesting, though.

I know.

Sweetie, believe me you don't know about ego boosting exercises until you get handed out Oscars by your fellow posters. :p

Hegel pwns Schopenhauer, IMO.

And the dorkiness of CFC just increased by 42%....

I used to be a lurker in the civ4 forums, as I play the game from time to time. I started checking out various other sub-forums on the site and eventually made my way to off-topic, which I found interesting.. because of the large cross-section of topics being discussed. (and the interesting cross-section of people in here)

I have to admit, I find this place somewhat addictive.. I'm not sure why. I actually almost quit a couple times.. recently, even.
