Octafish

OK gents, i stepped off the cliff of organizing an additional, semi-parallel game.

No offense at all to fearless leader Bath here.

Started a thread for "TacoFish2", per discussion.
Also set it up in PBEM Tracker.

I'll see those interested over there & not use anymore Octafish thread here.

Good luck in both games... unless you're near me. :D

I thot my 37 minute turnaround was hot till I saw Ken's 8 minute turn from this morning.

Heck it takes me 8 minutes to focus my eyes. Damn kids, always in a rush.

I'm in my 50's and can turn around a turn in less than 8 minutes ;)

Seems we are rolling along fairly well.

Bath or anyone, Q?: Can we change playing order after start? Perhaps we can improve turnaround time?

Seems we are rolling along fairly well.
Much better than I thought possible, from previous experiences.

Can we change playing order after start?
Not possible, I firmly believe.

Perhaps we can improve turnaround time?
I doubt it.

Also, I don't want to pour cold water, but most pbems lose people after a while.
Reliability, as well as empires, needs to stand the test of time.
Let us see how we are doing in a few months.

pbemtracker is partial inoculation against some of the side effects.

Thanks.

I was speaking in terms fine tuning to life schedules. Osbi are in same time zone & i'm an early riser (4-5am). If turn came to me from around the sun's direction, i could do turn before the sun rises here & get it to Osbi. :)

It just comes down to there being no really bulletproof way to synchronize people's schedules. I apologize for sleeping on the turn but its been coming here in at 1:30-2:30 am and I am simply not going to be able to turn it around all that often before the next morning.

We just need to avoid the sort of bottlenecks that extend the turns over 3-4 days.

Amen on the bottlenecks.

Just chatting/thinking about way(s) to fit efficient gaming into real life schedules.

Now - play order

Follow the sun is a given, but with 8 players it is pushing it to expect round the world in one day, although then again we have no more than 2 players in each time zone.

What I tried in another game was to split us into 2 sets of four, and instead try round the world twice in two days. This makes it almost impossible to go a complete turn in one day, but makes it more likely to get a complete turn in two days.

Not sure about this - the presence of so many flexible antipodean retirees makes it means perhaps we could go for the aggressive option - but perhaps those of you who have not yet given me your playing hours could do so, and I will think further.

Basically, I was astonished we managed any turns in one day given the setup, let alone several. But one turn in two days is fine, if we can maintain that pace.

In one game we had 3 turns in one day!

This is the moment you say, "Dang, why did we disable tech trading?"
Yeah. What a different game(!) playing w/o tech trading.
And, at least for moi', a huge difference playing at Monarch (those citizens can really take the whip!) + resources galore. :D

I don't know if the game differs much by using Hotseat with similar settings to ours herein... but it's certainly seems good training for our PBEM settings. :scan:

Another difference is using so many civ's = not much room for growing or building cities & econ before one bumps up next to another civ = war at some point whether U want it or not. I'm scared.

Bath or anyone that's had experience setting up PBEM...
Admin Q?: When setting up the game within Civ, is there a way to save a partially done game?

Or is it all-or-nothing / use-it-or-lose-it ?
