Never played Gilga, never played advanced start. Huge map? I might want to switch civs, when is the deadline?

Edit: I've only played on Marathon speed as well. So I started my own test game just now and wow. I am going to be cannon fodder I think. Or arrow fodder probably.

I'll give it a go.

By "post 3" U mean 3rd entry in THIS thread/forum or somewhere else?

Got the "post 3" figured out.

Gave it a go = rather strange to be handed things instead of scratching/working for them.

Got a turn done after spending (& saving some) gold. It signed off with "send on" instructions that referenced setting up from w/i game to email direct. Couldn't find where to set this function up, any clues/advice?

Meanwhile, it says to email to "Churchill". Is that a legit player or should we send it to PBEM Tracker or ...?

Thanks for the practice.

Found the place to enter email info, for other newbies;
it's under "My Details" from in-game menu, accessed with <Esc>.

Onward thru the fog.

I think it is just to practice how you would setup your initial start as opposed to actually playing a game.

It was only 396 gold. How do I figure out a SMTP server or whatever to send the turn though the game? Or was it STMP or SPMT. Really. I can't remember how to do that.

Mr Coop: As i say above, you clik on "My Details" in the game & it has a place for your email + email provider's code (somewhere in your email service they'll tell you what their code is). Supposedly, we enter that in & can email finished turn direct from Civ. Kool, if it works.

Meanwhile... we ready to get this game off the launch pad? This is 3-day weekend here in the USA = good time to play.

Okay, the good news is I found a SMTP address. The bad news is I sent the save to my own email account. Is this progress?

You can change civs tomorrow (Sunday) for sure, not likely to start before then.

Only practice, ignore any real settings. Tribes in this were random.

Correct.

The headline 440 is scaled down, depending on settings - everyone will get the same

I think you might be missing the point about pbemtracker.

As we are using pbemtracker to email the save to the next person, there is no need to send it from within the game, in fact pbemtracker is probably a good reason not to send it in-game.

Also, as this is purely practise, there is no point setting up email (except as practise, I guess)

Yes, I was initially resistant to pbem tracker as it took away the convenience of in-game emailing, but I've come around as it's the most reliable way of knowing who has the turn and therefore whom to prod if the game stalls.

What is the rule of thumb for you experts on advanced start. Use the gold to make cities, to build improvements, to make units or to get ahead start on tech? Or is there some balance of the aforementioned?

We are way behind the curve on this aren't we.

If the cost is the same as the practice turn, three cities would leave just 96 to go. I'd have to say its map dependant as far as going with two cities or three.

I really have no idea what is the best option as I play marathon single player only.

I think if someone plays the Inca we are pretty much screwed.

Map: Big and Small:... Snaky Continents - Islands Mixed In

I'm not fond of snaky continents... The 1st PBEM game that I played (mentioned earlier) I had a snaky "continent". It basically was one land square wide and at one part had a mountain that could not be gotten around until I grew fins and gills.

I guess there must be some balance, but I am not sure what it is.

Some people like having one powerful city for its productive output.
- but this city will quickly grow to unhappiness, and producing settlers can be expensive.

If you have too many cities you get into slowed economies, but three underpopulated cities seems ok from an economy point of view, but they take a while to become productive.

There may be studies somwhere of creating 3 cities versus one big one that immediately pumps out two settlers, but I don't know what it is.

Also, would you pay 40 for a farm, or instead pay more? for a worker ? Farm gets you going from the beginning, but the worker will catch up later if you have other resources to develop.

If I had a city with two wheat and two gold resources I would probably buy the population, the farms, the mining, and the mines, and start producing settlers (which also stops growth for a while) simply because the cash stream is too good to ignore.
This seems a no-brainer if the map is big enough, and danger should be some distance away.

Otherwise, if the locations are not clear, I might go more towards 2 not so small cities and a settler - one gamble is you have 10 moves of enforced peace, so some go for an explorer settler strategy knowing if they settle within 10 turns the unaccompanied settler is probably safe while finding the sweet spot for the next city.

If you don't know how far away the next tribe is, you might want to buy archery and some archers, to feel completely safe. Techs are expensive and your safety comes at a price of missed development, but there is probably little in the early game that can wipe out an exploring archer, and a promoted archer from many animals and barbs can become quite aggressive.
(In one game I played on a small map, I bought archery and some archers for defence - I then discovered the player right next to me had not, and I took his power city with the same archers - game host wiped out within 20 turns.) Of course, in an isolated spot, you might find that the neighbour turns up with crossbowmen bought with the cash from 3 productive - but undefended - cities, while you struggled along in your early game safety ?

The fact is, there are many bases to cover, and the ones you leave are the ones that can come back and bite you. But then again, they may not, unless you are unlucky ?

"I guess there must be some balance, but I am not sure what it is."

Yep, once again ol' Sid & his crews show what a great game is all about... tradeoff's

Another example of what makes this game such a classic & so enduring. Just like life, it's all about tradeoffs. Money or time. This one or that one. Another city or another unit. Speed or power. Tech or growth. On & on. Ya gotta Luv it!

Ken again.
After playing around using our settings & the "advanced" start, i'd like try the Incas. :shifty:

This advanced start spending is an art onto itself, aye? Really has one think thru relative values & costs.:undecide:

Don't do it. If you do then I have to play the Incas and then we end up with 8 Incas. The Incas should be banned in my opinion.

We could probably buy 4 Queballs right off the bat and start churning them out. Just too much.

 Didn't realize the Incas & their UU were so popular.

Fair enuf. Don't want this to turn into a build-&-kill encounter... other than the ample & aggressive AI.

I'll stay with Maya.

Hey, Bath, we gonna get started soon?
