Okay, finally, what exactly is an "emo kid"?

Indeed. My wife and I have finally admitted that being in our mid-30s we are no longer hip. Meh, being hip was overrated anyway, at least now I have money. :D
Sh*t man, I want money, too. :( ;)

What I don't really get is why people despise them so much. Well fine, maybe they are pretentious idiots but they sounds like rather low-profile people, i.e. they won't beat you up or tell the teacher they saw you smoke pot or some stuff like that that would really reward despising people.
People only dislike Emos because of that song. Most people had no idea what emo was before that. So emos are now the new fun thing to make fun of. Which quite honestly makes them want to be emo even more. Tehy thrive off of attention and the biggots who make fun of them are giving them it. If you really hate emos then just leave them alone, they'll die eventually.

Isn't hating people for being like that even more lame than being like that itself?
Yes it is, but people have been doing it since the begining of time, so what are you going to do.

I'm not sure people despise them all that much really. I just find the concept irritating, because it gives a bad name to us sensitive, melancholy people who like poetry but aren't the slightest bit emo, i.e., all sensitive and melancholy people until five years ago, or whenever this silly fad took off. It also offends my literary sensibilities when people write lame ungrammatical prose, break it into lines, and call it poetry, without regard for form or artistry.

They don't really exist. You can't get a straight answer because everyone here except you is in on the joke.
No actually, I asked the SAME question tonite on another thread, it's a perfectly reasonable question. Why answer with sarcasm and name-calling and telling people to look it up themselves? I assume it's a joke. ok.

Not being a teenager myself, I just began hearing that word recently, and all I heard was something about cutting.
Frankly , I agree with Hitro, it sounds like like typical teenager behavior to me. Most teenagers are very emotional, whether it's taking it out on themselves, trying too hard to get attention, or finding others to make fun of for showing their emotions. I'm not saying I wasn't prone to some of the same misconceptions, but please.....you dont make yourself better than others, "cooler" by covering your feelings with bravado, and labeling others as "losers" , "gay" ,"emo" , or whatever.

Yes, there may be some annoying examples out there, since when have a few teens not enjoying annoying others? They are in every group, and in every year. Since forever.

Why not treat everyone the same way you would like to be treated? You may be very surprised when you get to know someone.

The smartest thing anyone has said in this thread yet.

You're right. It's a perfectly reasonable question. I just know Hitro and was making an ass of myself. I apologized to him in PM, incidentally. There's a chance I now qualify as an "emo kid" ;)

Emos arent the same generic emotional teenagers. You arent a teenager, so have never probably seen or expereinced an emo. Nice try, but you need some firsthand experience before you can make a judgement.

How many Emos are their in 8th grade? Not many I would assume.

We all were teenagers once. And know what? Every generation has its version of rebellious misfits. Greasers, hippies, punks, goths, and now emos.

Rich kids, meh! Instead of counting their blessings and studying hard they waste their time doing this unproductive stuff. Meanwhile millions of other kids elsewhere are too poor to study and are picking through garbage just to be able to eat.

Out of the white kids in my school, about a fifth or so are emo. Thats almost 200. Enough to be annoying.

Did you just call me a rich kid? Or did I read that wrong. :p

Not you, MjM. The emo/punk/goth/hippie/pothead/whatever kids.

Same here, except I didn't apologise. I was just in a flippant mood this evening. I'm normally quite straitlaced, really.

I'm also somewhat curious about the phenomenon, because I've never actually met one of these people. Perhaps two or three in high school who were starting to lean in the direction, but nothing I would have characterised as unlikeable. I've encountered some of the constituent parts of the emo package, which I generally dislike, but frankly the stuff linked to from this thread weirds me out.

Yes, I have No experience at all, but I have learned a thing or 2 reading this thread. Thanks for the clearer picture. I can see where it could be annoying (of course I NEVER was annoying as a teen:nuke: ).

I wasn't meaning to imply all teenagers act or look the way they do, just that getting all emotional about hating one or more groups of teens, is just another style of emotional acting out, different , but not better. One group... getting emotional over accusing another group of being too emotional. Every group, the preppies, jocks, etc, has their more extreme, more annoying members. It does not mean we have to judge people as losers based solely on these groups.
As the man said, judge them by the content of their character. (Martin Luther King, Jr, yall):king:

Personally, I don't think there are emo kids, even if you were being flippant. Each and every person is individual and I don't see how these negative connotations and categorizations help anyone.

Well, that would certainly be a reasonable explanation for why I've never met one. The Internet is a strange place...

I get called emo a lot. Someone even called me an emofurry.

I don't think I listen to emo music, unless bands like HIM or Nightwish count. I think emo music is related to nu metal, because I heard many call Linkin Park an emo band.

What is an EMO?

Basically, emo kids are whats cool in the 'alternative' scene.

Yeah, you get emo kids at school that are misreable or whatever, but once you get to the real world (as in over 16) emo is all about FASHION and popular bands.

EMO is star tatoos, black and red clothing, dyed black or bonde (or sometime both combined) hair WITH a fringe, lip piercings, septum piercings, black and white strips and otehr such popular clothign styles.

EMO kids are too cool for you.

They like such bands as 'Panic! at the Disco', 'Fall Out Boy', 'My Chemical Romance', 'Lost Prophets*', 'Avenged Sevenfold' and 'Green Day'.

*In the UK this band are largely responsiable for the rise of Emo, as they got popular and suddenly all the cool kids started dressing like them

EMO's will however never ever ever agree on what music is classified as emo. the rest of us metalhead/goths/grungers/punks/whatever howver can spot emo music from up to 9.56 miles away, so ignore the emo's and believe us:mischief:

Bitter? me? nooooo.....

Nu-metal and emo is different, but alot of nu-metal kids in Bath became emo's.

HIM fans are like a breed of their own.
