One City challenge

Do vassals count as controlling an area? If not, almost none of the "control area" UHV's could be done, but there might be a few if vassals count.

The only one I think that counts for is Arabia. Otherwise, I pretty sure it’d be a no.

I guess not, because Indian land is very, very unproductive.

The main problem is having iron as opposed to copper, because Iron Working takes so long to research. Once I even popped Bronze Working from a goody hut, but it still took way too long. I suppose settling Lahore and going for archery might work, but there are no high productions squares around there.

So these are the two options so far: Settle Dilli 1SE (for Iron Working strategy), or Lahore on the sugar (for Archery strategy).

But if you can get some good mercenaries, then that might be doable.

I’ve never really used mercenaries… I may, however, start too. Are they worth the price?

Good job!
Is there any new strategies you used or some lucky/unlucky/funny events you saw?

First time through I focused more on conquest. Was planning to ultimately go for space race, but figured it would help to kill off some of the competition. I killed off the Dutch, French & Spanish. The Vikings beat me to Liberalism by a turn. :(

The Germans, Turks & Arabs all collapsed before I got to them, so I went back through to try and get rid of their cities before someone else spawned. Was only partially successful.

By the end the top powers were Russia, China & America. I made a bone-head move earlier in the game and built the national park. At first it was great, not having any health issues. Later, when I was building the ship and trying to found Aluminum Co, I remembered the whole no access to coal thing. Lacking that bonus production I wasn't able to get a ship launched by the end of the game. I built the UN, and was elected Sec. General, but didn't have enough votes for diplo after two tries.

I loaded a save from the middle ages and decided to just skip the whole conquering bit, and just build. Game went quicker. Not much happened. This was the victorious attempt.

In the first attempt when I didn't have any new buildings I built troops. In the second attempt when I didn't have new buildings I built tech. I think that helped. I also lightbulbed techs more than settling great people.

How do the culture boundaries work in the Dutch screenshot above?

Brest somehow controls the tile west of Paris, despite not controlling the tiles closer to it and farther than Amsterdam.

@OzzyKP
By the way, did you win on Monarch or Emperor?

Sorry, I just forgot to respond.
Mercenaries are often very cost-effective - if you are lucky, you can get a war elephant with only 30+ coins & 2GPT.

I tried this out as the Dutch and got a space race victory.

Thanks for reporting.
Did you choose 3000BC start or 600AD start? And was it on Monarch or Emperor difficulty?
Also plese tell us about some strategies and interesting events.

Speaking of Nottingham, anybody want to try a Viking-Nottingham or Viking-[city near Amsterdam that has all river tiles] one city challenge? (I would do so but don't have time)

@OzzyKP

Monarch.

Just tried one as Byzantium. Unfortunately there are lots of bugs with the mod, so I'm certain that affected things. :( But I came close! The Russians launched their fully complete ship 2 turns before I launched my half finished space ship. Argh! Their ship landed on the last turn of the game (mine would have been too late, if it made it).

So close!

I'd say this tile got lots of culture from a previous city (Paris) and is still in the cultural boundaries of Brest. Also, there are still the funny stuffs that happens with culture in RFC.

Just a question on what's considered one-city challenge: if you build a settler and gift it immediately to a vassal, does that count? (I'm finding that no aluminum is very difficult for the Vikings squatting in England).

I thought if you selected a Custom Game and ticked the 'One City Challenge' option, that building settlers was prohibited?

yeah but the Vikings start with 2 settlers extra.

Yes.
Gifting a few settlers to another civ does not seem to make a game too easy, so I'd say that's OK.
But just be sure to report it.

Pesonally, I don't even care if someone does not choose "One-City Challenge" as long as the person builds (or gets by flip) only one city, and no new city is built or obtained.
Without that option, a player cannot build the Opera House etc, so, good luck!

Just completed the Maya UHV on Monarch. Obviously the difficult part is to get to calendar in time and build the wonder. Tried several times with different city locations, but the only one that seems to work (with a little luck, popping mathmatics from a goody hut, saving 10 turns) is Huaxyacac 1E of the stone. The rest is actually quite boring and score is really bad, since you lack iron/copper and as such, you cannot really attack anyone once you get to astronomy.

Here's the strategy I used: Found city 1E of stone, send settler to south america for goody huts, send 2 warriors to north american huts. Research is sailing, mathmatics, calendar, code of law. Start with library and hire scientists as soon as possible. You need a lot of micromanagement here, as you will need food, hammers and economy! Now, I'm not sure it's possible to get calendar in time. I failed several attempts, succeeding only if I get some help from the huts. It may be possible w/o, but it is really tricky.

Ok, once you have calendar, head for code of law. In my games, rome beat me to the wonder several times, which is quite frustrating. In the winning game, rome was overrun by barbs, so I was able to finish the wonder in time (using the trees in mexico helps a lot, so be sure to research bronce working once you have code of law).

Ok, that was the interesting part. I continued building every left over wonder (as you can see, I even got the great wall and the maois) for better score. Tried to get to astronomy afterwards to be able to trade with europe. I hired as many scientists as possible, trying to push score till 1745, but nevertheless, as usual with the mayas, i scored dan quale.

Nicely done! :goodjob:

And as far as I know, Mayan OOC UHV is impossible on Monarch w/o the help of goody huts. I tried many times, and I never even popped a tech once, let alone mathematics or calendar. I had the assumption that Rhye removed tech-popping for the Mayans.

If it is possible, you would have to settle on the spot for the silver mines huge research boost. Even then, I always miss it by a few turns.
