Online petition for an updated Civ III editor

If you need help brainstorming, I did spend over 20 years in I.T. and would love to help devise the AI algorithms.

Best Regards,

Oz

That would be very helpful indeed. Help with the design of some parts of the game can be nice to.
I have the main ideas for parts, but we need to write down all the details

Just PM or email me with your thoughts. I must warn you that I shall remain insanely busy in the allegedly real world until about May 1st.

Best,

Oz

Yeah. But it was ambiguous and not specific. ;)

I believe it was Stoppard who observed that we English-language speakers are, "Tied down to a language which makes up in obscurity what it lacks in style."

... and I'd like an award for "Subtlest O/T Of The Month" ;)

And I have to teach this language to 422 hyperactive teenage Korean kids. :crazyeye:

In any case, I doubt that Firaxis is even going to consider releasing the source code given that the Civilization series is still alive and going. Since the Call to Power series pretty much ended with CtP II, Activision was a little more willing to release the code since. But who knows? Anything can happen. Here's hoping that some higher-up at Firaxis sees the light. Civ4's 3d system can't handle my 4,000,000-poly buildings. ;)

Addd voice to petition...

I was just about to bump this up myself :)

Ladies and Gentlemen of this supposed forum, I have an idea...

Not being one for speeches, I'll cut it short.

What if we tried to get some kind of Civ3 scenario importer available in the new Civ4 expansion pack? Obviously this would include being able to port over all text and graphics, too. Can't forget those.

The advantages to this would be:
-It could be developed directly with the rest of the expansion pack, therefor it would not be wasting Fireaxis' time as much.
-The Civ4 community would probably support it on the whole (how many times have they asked if the scenarios here will be made for 4? ;))
-It should give us at least the basic added modibility that we need (i.e. no limits on civs, improvements/wonders, etc.)

So, my questions are:
1. Is it worth perusing this idea? Is it to late? Is it a bad idea :p?

Even if the ghastly AI algorithms are the same, such an "import" would have to parse - or be manually "translated" - from one computer language into three, with completely different file structures and attributes (remember - last I checked anyway - there aren't even paratroopers in C4). IMHO a complete rewrite, a la Steph :worship: would be far easier.

Best,

Oz

They're apparently including paratroopers which the AI knows how to use in the next game.

But anyway, the method I was thinking would be a program that checks all of the variables, etc., and makes a copy like that, as opposed to physically moving all of the parts of the .biq

@Stormrage: I know :( Hence why we go directly to the creators for our crusade!

Is there any hope to this?

Yes: someone just has to be willing to write a check for (I'm guessing this high a number would be required to grab their attention) USD 100,000.00 for complete rights to the game. Short of that, neither pleas nor serious inquiries about various ways the code might be released have fallen on deaf ears, with several attempts to approach them at the corporate level having been met with deafening silence.

LMAO

Seriously tho, what about Steph's idea? Is there any way to alter the program without the original code?

For my part, I hope we're able to do something. The greatest thing about Civ III is how flexible it is. But it has its limits. This idea could really breathe new life into the game.

This idea could really breathe new life into the game.

I believe that's exactly what they do NOT want. Lingering on an old game like Civ III would draw attention away from more up-to-date projects, and gambling the loss of interest on future titles due to an older game would probably mean an overall loss of money for the company.

I mean, they'd never sell this thing for the price of a full game, meaning they won't even bother when they can release something brand new all together, which they, in terms of business-thinking, have a much better chance of gaining interest for. Consider that they are not going to gain massive amounts of new fans with a game that's been out for the past 5-6 years (can't remember tha exact year when Civ III was released) in contrast to a brand new title that will probably get the attention of old fans and new ones alike.

I totally agree that having an updated editor would kick arse, since I wouldn't have posted here were this not the case, however, I believe the chances are less than minimal.

It´s a nice ideas, the game need more things to do in diplomatics agrees, but i think that's not possible.

I never see a old game have a "patch" like this before... and this things looks like a new expansion, not a simple patch.

=/

Lets send them hate email. Jk :)
