Here's the article in question, and my response, point by point.

LOS ANGELES – Dr. Laura Schlessinger, the talk show host who recently apologized for saying the N-word 11 times to a caller on the air, said Tuesday she plans to give up her radio show when her contract is up at the end of this year.

The conservative advice maven made the announcement on CNN's "Larry King Live," saying she wants to "regain her First Amendment rights."

Schlessinger said she's not retiring or quitting. Instead, she said, she feels stronger and freer to say what she believes needs to be said.

"I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry — some special interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates and sponsors," she said.

Schlessinger apologized last week for saying the N-word several times in an on-air conversation with a caller whom she accused of being hypersensitive to racism. She said on her website that she was wrong in using the word for what she said was an attempt to make a philosophical point.

"To imagine that there are people who refuse to accept an apology because they have an agenda and would like me silenced — I'm done with that," she said.

During the on-air exchange, Schlessinger said the caller, who said she was black and married to a white man, was too sensitive for complaining that her husband's friends made racist comments about her in their home.

Schlessinger told King she "never called anybody a bad word" and "wasn't dissing anybody."

Corinne Baldassano, an executive with Schlessinger's production company, Take on the Day LLC, said the talk show host plans to pursue opportunities through her website, books, podcasts and a YouTube channel.

At least two national sponsors of her radio program, General Motors Co., and Motel 6, owned by Accor SA, have pulled out, Baldassano said.

Previously, Schlessinger's negative comments about homosexuality on her television show in 2000 inspired gay activists to campaign to get her off the air.

And my response:

I can't say I'm surprised without sounding really sarcastic.

The conservative advice maven made the announcement on CNN's "Larry King Live," saying she wants to "regain her First Amendment rights."

The First Amendment doesn't guarantee someone protection from people thinking they are an idiot when they open their big mouths and say offensive things based on ignorance and bigotry. It does guarantee someone the right to say such stupid things. That's all.

You'd think a media "personality" would understand more than anyone else what the first amendment protects.

Schlessinger said she's not retiring or quitting. Instead, she said, she feels stronger and freer to say what she believes needs to be said.

Yeah, all these years she's been holding out on us. Tell us how you REALLY feel, Laura. I can't wait to hear this.

"I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry.

Welcome to reality, you shriveled prune.

Gee, I just want to say the n-word a bunch of times without people getting all in a huff. I mean what's all that about? And those danged liberals always on about those gays and their so-called rights. What has this country come to when a person can't say something ignorant, insensitive, and politically motivated without offending someone. I mean my word!

— some special interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates and sponsors," she said.

Oh noes.

One hardly needs to be bullied by special interest groups to lose sponsorships when they rant for minutes on end the most offensive carp you'd ever hear on the radio short of a Michael Savage broadcast.

Silence your voice? Hardly. There aren't enough mothballs in all the closets in all the universe to silence this one.

No, you can continue broadcasting, you'll just have to turn to "special" advertisers who don't care about looking like unethical criminals. Like the Swiss America trading corporation. Or RightWingStuff.com. Or "miracle" Fat-busting herb merchants. You know, businesses that already look like they're run by a bunch of trolls, selling fraudulent or misleading products to naive people.

You'll never be driven from the airwaves. The most vile rotten ignorant filth is some of the most profitable and ratings-driven talk radio there is. You just have to sink to the bottom of the gutter in order to continue surviving. Think of it as being a scum-sucking bottom-feeder. They earn money from people who haven't got a clue, but they somehow ended up with excess cash. A fool and their money are soon parted, thanks to right-wing talk radio advertisers and sponsors.

:D

That's the tactic. Say a bunch of racist things or use a bunch of racial epithets and then cry and whine and  and moan about the backlash. Oh no, they're accusing me of being racist, just for saying racist or racially-motivated things! I'm being called out for being a shock radio hack! Woe is me.

"To imagine that there are people who refuse to accept an apology because they have an agenda and would like me silenced — I'm done with that," she said.

This isn't someone with a strong record of supporting rights of minorities or the sensibilities of people who had a bad day or blurted out one offensive dumb thing on the air. If it were, she wouldn't have gotten this far in the talk radio world.

No, this is someone who consistently and for years has been an overflowing toilet of hatred and idiocy. Play the wounded shock jock one more time, just for me, it's really moving.

I'll play the world's smallest violin.

During the on-air exchange, Schlessinger said the caller, who said she was black and married to a white man, was too sensitive for complaining that her husband's friends made racist comments about her in their home.

Wow. Way to make your stand, Schlessinger. A woman has to tolerate racism in her home, with gentle good humor? Since when?

This advice is totally awesome. I can see why it would appeal to those who would call a Doctor whose training and education relates to biology, who did her thesis on the effects of insulin on rat cells, to solve their social problems. Whose solutions, by the way, frequently equate to "suck it up" and "stop being so sensitive".

:goodjob:

My advice to Laura who is whining about all those special interest groups: Take your own advice.

Schlessinger told King she "never called anybody a bad word" and "wasn't dissing anybody."

Dr. Laura "missing the point" Schlessinger, everybody.

Corinne Baldassano, an executive with Schlessinger's production company, Take on the Day LLC, said the talk show host plans to pursue opportunities through her website, books, podcasts and a YouTube channel.

Only that many other forms of media, after voluntarily resigning? The first amendment HAS BEEN SLAIN!!!!

It's the end of our republic as we know it! The liberals have killed liberty!

At least two national sponsors of her radio program, General Motors Co., and Motel 6, owned by Accor SA, have pulled out, Baldassano said.

And we all know how immoral pulling out is. :D

Previously, Schlessinger's negative comments about homosexuality on her television show in 2000 inspired gay activists to campaign to get her off the air.

No. Not those gays, too. What has she ever done to them?

Schlessinger's views on homosexuality were a major factor in the show's undoing. In the months leading up to the premiere of her TV talk show, Schlessinger called homosexuality a "biological error." She expressed the view homosexuality was acceptable as long it wasn't public, or those that were did not attempt to adopt children. She regularly compared LGBT parenting to pedophilia by reiterating her view that "a huge portion of the male homosexual populace is predatory on young boys." Schlessinger was frequently criticized in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual (LGBT) media for her view of homosexuality as a "biological error," and for her opposition to adoption by same-sex couples. Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), a LGBT media watchdog group, began monitoring Schlessinger's on-air comments about LGBT people, posting transcripts of relevant shows on its website. Schlessinger attempted to repair her relationship with the LGBT community without success. Her March 2000 public apology on her radio show was withdrawn two weeks later when it was not wholeheartedly accepted.

Gays are child predators who shouldn't be allowed to adopt children or mention their orientation in public. Why would they be offended? :crazyeye:

"I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry."

Then move to an island somewhere with nothing but hateful bigots like you. Then, I guarantee you, they will adore you and make you queen. And no one will raise a voice against you. There already are millions of deluded sheep out there that listen to your nonsense, and that's way further up the food chain than a gutter rat like you should ever hope to achieve. Take your piles of cash made by appealing to the lowest, ugliest, most ignorant human impulses, and enjoy the rest of your wretched miserable life.

:goodjob: Have a nice day, then.

Feel free to weigh in with your comments, well-wishes, and frank assessments of Doctor Laura, as positive or negative as they may be. Don't expect me to respond however to any knee-jerk defenses of Doctor Laura from the wingnut gallery, as the arguments never change, and the defenses are quite honestly too silly and too filled with double-standards to take seriously. I'm quite sure she makes a whole lot of sense to some of you, and that's wonderful. Please continue to enjoy swallowing her tripe. ;) The first amendment protects that sort of thing, after all, as well as my modest and understated opinions on the matter.

Oh, so she's pulling a Palin, huh? (quitting in the face of well deserved adversity I mean, not the racism.)

I listened to the controversial call and her use of the word n----- didn't sound offensive to me. She said she didn't like the double standard where comedians on HBO could say n----- and others in the media can't. She never called the caller a n-----. It seems that any use of the word n----- by a white person is by definition racist. That is stupid, but it looks like that is the case in this controversy.

A comedian piece on Hitler: "You did what? YOU DID WHAT?! Du Swanzkopf! I asked for a glass of juice!!"

Now imagine this being presented by others in the media. Would be a bit odd and unbelievable wouldn't it?

white people should never use the n word. It's far different than a black person using it in a rap song.

This is my favourite Open Letter to Dr. Laura.

I should mention she should retire. She's an embarrassment to the right. Okay, I'll admit pretty much everyone is an embarrassment to the right. but in her case, I think she's going senile.

Actually, on Bob Rivers this morning (a local rock radio show thats fairly liberal) they were actually agreeing with Doctor Laura on her actual point - that radio is certainly over-censored/regulated in comparison with other media types, especially stuff from over the internet (which isnt really regulated at all).

Apparently some people cant seem to get past her being a conservative to consider her actual point about freedom of speech. Ah well.

I agree that her using the N word was overhyped and not that offensive in the context in which she used it. From what I've heard, her comments about homosexuality over the years are very offensive but maybe she's been misquoted in some instances.

In this photo she kind of looks like Suze Orman's twin.

Censoring is when you are not able to say/show certain words or things, for instance due to bleeping and blackening out. That's impossible on live-radio (and live-TV).

If that's her/their point it's ridiculous.

I've always interpreted it as allowing a person to speak their mind without there being a legal repercussion, with an exemption for those who yell "Fire!" in a crowded place, slander, etc.

I am not a fan of people losing their jobs because they voice an opinion. If one is punished for exercising their right to free speech, then they do not really have free speech. It would be like claiming political opponents who get jailed for their beliefs/statements have free speech. Sure you can speak your mind - because you have the freedom to - but if we don't like what you have to say then we're going to throw you in jail/fire you after wards. It's a farce.

"Black people are over sensitive! *Repeats N-Word over and over again*"

A word by itself isn't offensive. Context is everything, and that was her point. I agree with that point. I further go on to say something "on principal" 11 times in a conversation puts you in a rather negative context.
