I am currently doing a playtest as the 3rd Reich - Since it was time to try out the bad guys! I decided to play as Herman Goring, with the backstory
that Hitler had a stroke, and "Der Kaiser Herman" stepped in to run the war. I can tell you the play is much harder than I thought, which is good.
Germany has a terrible economy, so you have to sneak out freight past the ever vigilant British Empire, who hammer you every turn...A great challenge...!
Making money in the meantime involves sinking ships for loot, and looting cities you capture. And the giant soviet lands await to be plundered.
I've re-written the entire Barbarossa events for Germany and Russians, simplifying them and avoiding the "unit attack" mess of the previous event frameworks.
Now the attack will happen when the reich gains the "total war" tech (which is being researched at the start) or when the USSR gains the partisan warfare tech.
Both regimes are basically on a 6-8 turn countdown to war at the start of the scenario, which can sped up or slowed down, but happens more organically now.
So I am now in summer 1941, the event kicked off nicely, and the Russians had their counter attack event a few turns later. So it felt more like a flowing situation,
rahter than two huge attack events appearing due to one unit being killed. I have captured many Western Russian cities, with it seeming very easy! But just like
real history, as Moscow is coming into range, the masses of T-34s and bombers have arrived and the counterstrikes are taking their toll...Just as I planned it.
The invasion feels about right in terms of difficulty, and this is even without the USSR being boosted with many events-spawned units. It bodes well for the
Russian and German versions, where the opposition is more tailored and heavy. So I will report how things go. I am considering breaking out of my South
England beach-head and taking London, but that brings in the USA for the war, which is a whole new can of whoop-ass for the reich!
Feels weird playing the most evil faction (apart from the USSR) but I want to make sure the experience for all factions works well, so I look forward
to trying out the USA and the mass-unit management hell of the British! I'll keep you guys posted! And thanks of you read all of this massive post!
