Definitely the old stuff, but not so much the new. Prog-rock is the label I usually hear, though most prog-rock doesn't do it for me the way Tool does.

Oh, yeah, I forgot AC/DC! Their songs (sans a few, like Thunderstruck) all sound the same. All my friends like AC/DC, (my speech teacher, too, we watched their live DVD concert to learn stage presence) but I can't stand them. Their lyrics are idiotic too. (Two of their hits include a song about how much of an erection he has and a song about how big his balls are.)

Tool is not bad. They have a honest artistic approach and way of doing things. But like all valuable bands, they are terribly overrated by their die-hard fans. Even here. They're not that great.

actually even I tend to overrate them. They aren't even my favourite band. I just rate them so high since they have a unique style. And no other band sounds like them.
That said, I didn't even buy the new album
. So I suppose I'm not a die hard fan. I prefer their older stuff like Aenima and Undertow.
