Overrated Bands

Excuse, me. It is Megadeth that is so flamingly overrated :p ;)

DMB is overrated because all their music is crap and you have about 75% of the nation that can't stop talking about going to see them in concert. They have the biggest fan pack of any group almost, it is sickening.

Megadeth is underrated, if anything. Over shadowed by other bands like Metallica and Anthrax.

I never hear of DMB or thier concerts.

I never hear of DMB either, and hear little of metal but "Metallica rawks my sox!, and oh on a totally random note, Black Sabbath and ACDC are awesome too

....and your music sucks!!!!!!"

I see music and televangelism as being alike; they both say they're about one thing (music/religion) but in reality, they are about another. The other, in both cases, is money.

People, however, are ultimately duped into believing their mantra, about being for the "greater good" of whichever cause they so believe in. If you ever hear anybody say "it's about the music," you know right there that they are lying.

There are some jobs that have certain civic and patriotic requirements, so to speak, but a musician is not one of them.

I disagree...sort of. I don't think anybody is stupid enough to go into Music performance with profit being the PRIMARY motivation. There are gazillion bands, almost nobody makes any money. Its a very stupid business move. People go into the recording business, or the promotion business, just to make money...and eventually, band's priorities shift as well (selling out).

But I really think it starts out about "the music". Or at least something else, like "getting chicks" or "free beer".

I'll be totally honest with you guys. I learned to play drums...and became pretty passionate about learning to play them well, because I thought it would help me get girls. After I developed that skill, it became "about the music", and making art. But Chicks were first.

As a joke my band and I played this song at a club called "The deepest sorrow", it was a totally overdone emo song, we did it as a ****ing JOKE, a ****ing JOKE for god sakes and a guy came up to us afterwards and told us that the deepest sorrow song was good but all your other **** was lame. So yes, if you want to make money as a musician, its very easy.

There is quite a difference between becoming popular on a short term basis, and making real money. One actually isn't *that* hard (depending on your genre). The other is *very* difficult, and takes a lot of hard work and time...or TONS of luck.

If you're really just going for money, you select genre based upon what will sell best at the time. I agree that you can't easily become massively popular and rich, though. But you can do well enough like this to earn a comfortable living, which is better than 99.9% of bands that pop in and out of existence.

Greenday's first 3 albums were pretty good... I still listen to Kerplunk. "Nice guys finish last" is an awesome song.

metal as a whole is rediculously overrated... except motorhead, motorhead rules. I think the sex pistols are overrated, they sucked and were just a marketing tool to sell clothes. Now it's trendy to wear pistols shirts or a sid vicious shirt and its annoying.

The 'best' punk bands were the first ones; Romanes, Clash, Iggy Pop. Today's punk is crap.

the best punk surfaced around 80-87. Also anyone who think's today's punk is crap really has no idea what their talking about cause they don't know any of "today's punk".

My Chemical Romance are most definitely emo. Sorry to break it to you.

Well theyre not, you can't just say because theyre whiny and annoying that they're emo, it's a genre on it's own and you can't just tack something onto a crappy genre because you dont like the band. Emo is a form of hardcore (bad form) that arose in the late 80s from the washington punk scene, although the punks generally hated it, MCR is in no way akin to Emotive Hardcore (such as Rites of Spring, Embrace). MCR is just very crappy, very corporate, very annoying pop-rock.

No band is overated if they sell albums. The utlimate goal of a music band is to sell, by whatever means. So if they are popular, they are good, (or their producer is...)

The real question you seem to be asking is "what band sold a lot of albums despite the fact that they don't have much musical talent or creativity".

In that case I gazilonth Green Day. I suck at guitar yet I could play all their song eyes closed.

Those who mention Led Zep simply don't know what music is :p.

anyone who thinks like this doesn't know what music is. I dont understand this whole "the quality of music is based on how complicated the songs are" mentality. Led Zepelin, pink floyd and all classic rock is boring bloated crap. (that being said green day does really blow)

Your last sentance here the key. When 99.9% of bands *can't* do it, I think its safe to infer that it isn't all that easy. It certainly is possile to make a "living" performing...when one supliments that income by playing in several groups, or as a session musician...or by teaching, or selling musical products, etc. To sustain oneself off of the income from one performing group is pretty hard.

Nice Guys finish last is on Nimrod and not Kerplunk though.

Or am I missing something here?

No-one is complaing about Queen (and they shouldn't, if they wish to live  )
I would.
While Queen of couirse are iconic, and wrote a large number of classic songs, statistics say that they would have.
Just the pure amount of stuff that Queen wrote, of which upwards of 75% is utter crap means that there is a large number of songs that were good.
They just generally spammed the market with music, essentially to make money.
