Thirty minute update:

thirtyminutes.JPG

:woohoo:I am on a roll!!!:woohoo:

well i just downloaded the patch, only took about 3 minutes, it installed itself. started up a new game and found the same things as with 1.08. as long as i leave the map on standard everything works great but the continents, pangea, archepeligo and terra maps wont work on anything bigger than that. the others work on large and none of them work on huge. i havent played a new game long to find out how it will work but its definitly better

So, am I the only one who even didn't manage to install the glorious patch?
BTW, same error with 1.09

Thanks (It crashed a few seconds ago). Do I save it or run it and if I save it where do I save it to?

They are on the right track, the game or at least a saved file worked much smoother in late ages. The advisor screens come up a lot quicker, even the military advisor doesnt take 2 minutes to load  Resource management on my computer is much more reasonable, so it appears they know the cause of the massive memory usage and have cleaned it up some. I havent been able to play a full game, but loaded up a save game from 1700s to the end, and the game seemed a lot more stable, rival civ turns were quicker and the sound/video from wonder movies worked like the should. A few minor annoyances but for me it is a huge improvement from the retail version.

Mine crashes during dl every time. I've tried 3 different times. 3 different places its crashed. Plus, its slow as a turtle. And I have a fast computer.

You guys can consider finding another computer to download it, then save it on a disk, and send it to your pc.

Just an idea/alternative.

Anyways, my download went fine (not from the game, but from sites like filefront) and now, along with Omega Drivers, the game seems perfectly fine! After 28 days of waiting.... I am off to play Civilization 4! Wish me luck on my first game! :D

Some body need to suggest they make these patches so you can get only the new stuff. 23.6 MB for each one?

That puts a strain on all bandwidth for DL sites with so many customers. I would have thought they could have made it much smaller for those with 1.08 already.

On further playing...the one problem I WAS having..CTD at random using tilted_Axis map appears to have gone away..

Sorry for those with problems, but for me at least the patch is good.

Yes 1.08 was running with a late game save at about 700MB and pretty steady.

A new game was more or less the same size. Faster screens, but still had the issue of late game painting the screen.

oh really? that is what I expect. I will test mine tonight.
CDT is the reason why I dare not play CIV4

Did you read the other 7 pages before posting that?

He probably did since this patch has fixed NUMEROUS issues. I for one praise it since I can now see the terrain and faces!!! I've been playing since release date with no land or fog of war and this is heavenly to be able to see the game as intended. There are still problems, yes. But on my computer the game has been sped up considerably. The new bugs I've noticed are minor, such as, the science advisor screen is incorrect (says I don't know techs I do). But overall this patch did fix MANY things. And face it, we all knew that with any patch a few new bugs would be introduced.

Downloaded the patch 5 times... successfully. Once from in game then from various mirros posted on here. The first 2 times the install shield wizard crashes with

An error [-5006: 0x8000ffff] has occurred while running the setup.

the next 2 went through the initial Installshield wizard and then gives me the same catastrophic error as Jcricket showed.

NEXT the fifth download actually worked and patched the game! Now to see if the game works...

So... if yours isn't working... download it from lots of different places and maybe one will work for you!

Edit: Oh yah... and going back... each of the downloaded patches still crashes in exactly the same manner each time even now except the fifth one... Same file sizes etc...

regarding that 1706 error.. I got it too. It doesn't seem to affect single player.. yet when I try to join my friends in a LAN game, it tells me that my version does NOT match the host's. Is there a solution to this problem?

I'm downloading from FileFront, and using a dial up modem I am at 25% after about 30 mins. (not half bad for my connection). After years of loosing downloads, or just simply wanting to download large files over several internet sessions, I have found that using a download manager like GetRight really helps. For those of you experiencing crashing problems you might try one of these so that you can resume the download again without having to start over.

Arg!

I download the patch. I run the patch. It claims:

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is installed. This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

What the hay? My game is legit, bought and paid for on Gamespy, downloaded without error and runs as well as can be expected for a prematurely released beta version that uses the players to find all the bugs.

Why won't the patch install?

The patch is for the boxed version only I beleive. It will be up to the site you downloade it from to provide the patch for their version to account for the differences in copy protection, etc. You have a slightly different civ4.exe version.

I don't think the patch works for Direct2Drive version of Civ4. They are going to release a separate patch for it.
