Patch News!

I've noticed temporary slowdown. The key word is temporary. That's not a memory leak, sorry.

A memory leak, folks, is when objects/garbage are not cleaned up (usually due to malloc/alloc misuse), causing the amount of memory used on the heap to grow. Since the amount of memory used for a saved game is consistent after reboot it is not a memory leak.

I've written (and fixed) memory leaks by the way. This is my professional opinion.

"Since the amount of memory used for a saved game is consistent after reboot it is not a memory leak."

This is not what other users are reporting. Many people have reported the exact opposite of what you quoted. The memory leak theory is based on these other users reports.

Sounds like you agree though, that if memory used after saved game is consistent then no memory leak. If not, memory leak.

"Dennis Shirk, Manager at developer Firaxis Games...

you think?"

Most big companies have a PR guy (or a whole PR team) in addition to managers. PR = public relations.

I was suggesting that PR massaged his statement before they let him issue it. Don't see how the fact that he is a manager tells you definitely one way or another.

Wait, did I sign up for the wrong forum or something? How come civfanatics doesn't get the news directly also?

Because of all the whiners/flamers/trolls on this site they decided that 'poly is now the more friendly site?

Wow, so let's just all shut up and kiss up to be a friendly site! What an honor that would be.

So doing anything other than "whining, trolling or flaming" is kissing up? I suppose that means I'm kissing up to you. ;)

Poly was also giving MOO3 rave reviews, and their reviewer gave a full review based on a whopping 10 turns of game play.

Not exactly probing...

Uty, if you are interested, there is a nice discussion and a lot of work being done about the possible memory leak in the Bug Reports section. You might want to check that out if you are interested. It seems that there is at least a good possibility of that being the case (extensive testing and system/ code evaluations by very knowlegeable users- perhaps you can contribute?)

See? MANY gameplay improvements, with many in capitals! Capitals no less!

I think people were too harsh on Firaxis, though TBH I'd be pissed off too if I couldn't get Civ IV to work (although I do remember not getting CivIII to work with my old computer even though it met the minimum specs... it just wouldn't start) and they should've said something but maybe they were hard-pressed between everything or... didn't want to make promises they couldn't keep or whatever.

Either way, I have confidence in Firaxis to significantly improve the game with this patch and future patches. Hopefully you can click on blue text in the Civilopedia... that'd make navigating it a lot easier.

Kind of funny that they mention (rather minor) in my opinion play fixes first and then mention the memory/vid card/ programming issues almost as an afterthought.

But its good news to hear a patch is due out soon.

Maybe on their end, the vid card/memory issues were a much easier fix than the other stuff..

Or act like adults. Grown ups? Mature kids? Tolerant toddlers?

That is not true. I have notice huge jump in memory usage and severe slow down after you do a certain things. This is not normal, because in a normal situation, slow downs are gradual.
By the way, I worked 4 years as a programmer before going to law school. I know what a memory leak is.

Kind of funny that they use civanon as a marketing tool, but can't handle the criticism from fanatics...

I enjoy this site tremendously - personally, I ignore the more obviously hostile posts (that accompany any hotly anticipated new release)... but, I also ignore the fanboi "This is the best game ever made and there is nothing wrong with it" posts...

So, according to warpstorm - in order to get equal distribution of news all we need to do is direct the whiners/trolls/flamers to the other site? (THAT's logik for you...)

Or should we be offended that they choose to mock us with thier civanon marketing campaign?

I will do neither...

animal husbandry reveals horses? WTH? it's not like iron which you have to mine for...it's a friggin horse...it's a little hard to miss even if you don't know how to put a saddle on it.

But if you don't know that a horse is useful, then you don't know to pay attention for it, so hiding the horses effectively mimics the fact that early men didn't know they were useful and therefore didn't know to build their cities near them.
