Reading a couple of threads here, and once again encountering idiots in real life, especially at work, I am once again remingded how many people seem like they'd fail a turing test.

Why is that? Is it proof for intelligent design, that the designer only produced a limited number of real people, and the rest are automatons, with certain preprogrammed responses to various topics? i.e. "The current law is not discriminatory, it treats everybody equally." " 'I have counted it twice because it's twice as likely to happen. 'No it's not, it's equally likely, because x, y, z.' 'But I have counted it twice because it's twice as likely to happen.' " And so on, I'm sure you have your own examples. Anyone want to explain why so many people would fail the turing test?

People actually are different from computers, because they cannot remember what they've learned from previous discussions. The clock will 'reset' and go back to the basal state.

Unless it's like Alice, but you start talking to her from a new computer, so she doesn't remember your previous conversation

Some people really are automatons

Most people are sheep, who follow most of what theyr'e told and make up about 70% of the population, about 20% are able to make decisions for themselves about small factors in their lives and can even disagree with the majority!!! Some however are Shephards and they number around 10% of which maybe 1 or 2 actually have an ability not only to think for themselves but to make good decisions for other people.

:D

Because the turing test was set up to equate AI with human intelligence

Most people are stupid. Therefore it's only the peculiarities of human speech and interaction an AI finds difficult to mimic. therefore in fact although 99.9% of people would pass the turing test. That does not make them smarter than a machine ;)

People? I thought all of us were just sentient chatbots?

She doesnt even remeber her current converstions.

Tell her your name, then ask what you name is.. she doesnt remeber what you told her :(

Alice is really dim, but an interesting experiment. It's very easy to throw her off by using abstractions and social peculiarity, for example people know to react to say a jibe about the football team they support with good humour, and with mockery where as alice will do something totally within keeping of logic. Not a good example but you see what I mean. also saying why do you think that would make someone laugh or cry, elicits some pretty nonsensical stuff if you push her hard enough :D you can waste hours trying to throw her though which is kind of the reason for her in the first place. It's an evolutionary program after all. The idea is to refine it's design.

Don't you just love the maturity degree of this thread?

"Oh noes, Oda and Hitro were not convinced by our reasonings in teh Maths thread, let's make a thread about how people like them look likes dumb automatons"

Wonderful :).

As for the Turing test, I'm pretty sure everyone would fail at some point or other by your standards of what constitute "pre-programed answers".

Everyone who participate in any debate on CFC, for a start, since they generally consist of everyone repeating the same damn points over and over again in answer to the same damn other points from the other side.

Or do they just fail the Turing test if the points they constantly repeats are points you disagree with?

Regarding that Alice program, I just got involved in a debate on how Jesus died for our sins. And it was brought up by her! And ended pretty quickly too, but I was hoping I could escape such things :p

 Me too, I asked her something, and she told me I should try going to church and asking God for the answers.

odd, she couldnt learn my name... kept calling me "nonspecific, seeker"
