Petition to add Poland

Why would Uncle Ernie be the UU for Poland?

Though nothings moves me against Poland, youmay consider your position in a different perspective when not even Portugal is in!!!

Portugal, who ruled the world seas for more than a century and whose empire strechted from Brasil, Morroco, Angola, Mozambique, Ormuz (in Persia), India, Malaca, Indonesia, and subdue empires like Japan and China (Macau)

We were the first true globalizers and my fathers were the first to be in all meridians (I am a Magalhães/Maggellan myself)

So, if we are not in, why you?

PS: I hope noone takes this personnal. This is only a person from an ancient empire speaking.

Your,
Ricardo Jorge Fernandes Campelo de Magalhães

If you weigh whether a nation has been in civ at all as being that more reason to have them in, Portugal was as recent as civ3 (I have no memory if Portugal was in I or II) while Poland is completely absent from the series.

I've already said what I knew about the whole Polish-Jew thing...I'm watching, but not saying another word.

But on fascism in France...the French had a pretty strong fascist movement. Not to mention a war hero supporting collaboration with the Nazis--a certain General Petain (I think I misspelled that, but you get the idea). He was the French hero in World War 1, and he ended up siding with the Nazis.

The United States had fascist and communist movements, but they were a very small minority. Unlike the much larger factions in Europe, the US fascists and communists never got really strong following. Unless you subscribe to a certain Mr. Joe McCarthy's opinion. But I wouldn't believe that.

Since the United States wasn't invaded by ground in World War 1, they naturally were not as beaten up as Europe was. Economic problems are one factor, and the memory of a bad war another. The US had the former, while most Europeans had both. The US suffered very little in the first World War, and Europe's infrastructure (social, economic, political, etc.) was devastated.

A great deal of France had a fascist government running it, Vichy France, which you probably know about.

LOL just remembered by Polish classmate wanted Poland in. He said the UU should be Drunk Old Man With Sharp Knife...

good one lol!

But anyway, Do you know that Vodka was invented in Poland.
That was an econimical invention to create more domestic demand of great surplus of produced grain ;)

If you want Poland added as independent country, Lithuania should be added too. All the best Poland times was in the unity with Lithuania and at a certain time, Great Duchy of Lithuania was the biggest country in Europe with territory from Baltic to the Black sea.

You are undoubtedly right, but...
Because of purely egoistic reasons we leave Lithuanians lobbying for Lithuania ;)
To be historically correct, I'd preffer instead of Poland only, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or Three-Nations Republic rather, with leader Joghaila, Sigismund August or Sobieski. But I am not sure would it be clear or wouldnt it broke our petition.
Furthermore, I'd bet not many of my fellow countrymen would share this point of view

That would seem to support the idea of a Slav civilization, although of course the face of Russia is Slavic as well.

The emmigrant. Huge population and productivity bonus to other civs.

BAM

also i just want you guys to know that this thread has made me dislike Poland a bit, and wish that we could all speak English :/

I don't know if you're joking, but every country has its dark past. And if everyone spoke English, I'd be out of a job teaching it.

UmwamleLaba - I like the general idea of your post, but I do not agree with the sentence "Poland has been a unified country for a very short period of time (maybe 200 years total)" - I was learning history of Poland for many, many years (as everyone in Poland) and AFAIK Poland is recognized as a country from year 966 (Baptism of Poland). The only sure period that we were not unified country was 1795-1918, so there is still ca 900 years left... We may argue about period around XII century, when there was several Princes of Poland, but as I remember there was always one senior Prince that hold the title of King of Poland.
FoxTrot12 - maybe funny, but offending.
Vertico - I'm not sure if vodka was invented in Poland, many countries like to claim this "invention" :D surely we make one of the finest vodka now (we call it "wódka" read: "voodka", it comes from word "woda" which means "water" in Polish).
Ravo - I would gladly see Lithuania in civ, but to be honest I don't think that before Poland :) Lithuania controlled larger area - it's true, but 1) those areas were hardly populated those days 2) Lithuanians made up very small portion of the controlled population and 3) in Commonwealth the main power was Poland.
Eskel - I would like to see Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth :) but i agree that it would be too hard to understand for foreigners - this union was in effect so long time ago that except for Poland and Lithuania people don't know anything about it. I think that it would be 'mission impossible' to convince Firaxis to add such civilization (unless next add-on would be about medieval Europe, then it could be great idea).
a4phantom - Slavian civilization would be strange for me. Mainly because Slavians make up the largest ethnic group in Europe and they would be represented as one civilization, while western civilizations are split into countries... strange. Secondly, Lithuanians does not qualify to this group - they're different ethnic group. Finally, Russians are Slavians as well - so it would be strange to have both civilizations.

I think that adding Poland would balance the representation of Europe in game. I know, it's already represented quite well if we take into consideration count of civs, but Europe is the craddle of modern civilization. It would have also positive impact on sales for Firaxis, because:
1. Poland is an emerging market - we have almost 40mln of citizens with GDP growing almost 6% a year
2. We have up to 20mln people with Polish roots abroad - with up to 10mln in USA alone
3. Slavians in Europe would be more than happy to have two Slavic civilizations in game. Russians are generally not liked in East and Central Europe as they occupied all of it during ca. 1945-1990 and imposed puppet regimes
I don't want to say that adding of Polish civilization will boost civ5 sales, but I think that it will undoubtely increase it.

I knew (and I think said) that Russia or at least the political elite and face of Russia is Slavic. It's true that 'Slavs' don't have the same unified feel as most civs in the game, but neither do Celts or Arabs. I did not know that Lithuanians were a seperate ethnic group though.

You are all missing the main reason why Poland is not in the game: Manliness.

It sounds cool when you hear "Dude! I was destroyed by the Egyptians!"

It sounds significantly less cool, however, when it's "Dude! I was destroyed by the Polish!"

:p

And how does it sounds for you 'Dude! I was destroyed by Mali!' for me not too good...
The reason why the sentence you've mentioned doesn't sounds too good for you is your lack of European history knowledge. I don't blame you, I know that you are learning almost only history of the USA in schools. Generally I think that level of education in USA is not too good. I'll give you one example: my wife's uncle emigrated (with family) around 1989 to USA - he's two children were in school then. We spoke then about level of education in USA - for example my wife's cousin was in 5rd grade then and in USA he had to learn during math lessons... fractions! :) Something he learned in Poland in 3rd grade - two years earlier. So unsurprisingly he and his sister had no problems in schools (except for English which they had to learn quickly :) ).

I am well aware the US education system is lacking, and I support massive reform.

However, don't take my post seriously. I support putting Poland in, just as I'd support putting many other notable civs in. Poland, at various times, was a very strong nation.

I learned fractions in 3rd grade. Must be that Polish ancestry striving to overcome my American limitations. Of course so did the other 3rd graders, and most of them were probably of Norwegian or African heritage, and they managed too.
