PH09: The King and We

nice set! the aztecs are on the move, and if i feel we're able to, i'll start the war.

i have to post a couple reports tonight, so i may not have time to play tonight, but i've got it and will have something up by tomorrow.

it's funny: the last time i had this we only had axes and cats; w/maces and trebs, it's like i went to nirvana

I started, I did some slight MM in our cities, the most significant of which is taking off the prophet at Tenoch. Press Enter.

1405
Oh, great news for the coming war!
IMG01-1405LeastPowerful.jpg

Guilds came in, and I traded it away:
IMG02-1405RammyTrade.jpg

I started next on Education for a possible Liberalism run ~ maybe something after Gunpowder if we can??

I also founded Tlaxcala:
IMG03-1405TlaxcalaFounded.jpg

I then went through our cities again, and whipped anything for multiple pops.
The whip was applied in Tlatelolco, Texcoco, Rheims, Tours, Orleans, and Chartres. And that was just the beginning.

On the next IBT, Biz went to Theocracy ~ hmmm . . .

Nothing much happened for the next few turns. I applied the whip some more, while also building more troops everywhere. I’m not going to start off the war during this set, but get an army ready. As Fox has said, as Monty we NEED to be using the whip a whole heckuva lot. I envision a handful of cities that we very rarely touch so they grow and provide a good economic base, while many other satellite cities are whip fodder, cranking out troops, and growing back ASAP. In that vein, I also set all our cities but Tenoch to commerce/food emphasis so we can whip quicker. I also turned off research to upgrade our Jags.

Finally, in 1430, something photo-worthy happened:
IMG04-1430FustatTaken.jpg

They took it w/3 units!?!?

And I still haven't seen any english troops around. Also, we should figure out about the HE ~ tenoch is #1 in production now, so maybe there?

1440, and Nanjing captured by England.

Sally wanted to deal:
IMG05-1440NoDeal.jpg

I said no.

Due to my whipping, we’re now @ 40% science, +16gpt. I also started a forge at Tenochtitlan.

There was also a palace vote:
IMG06-1440PalaceVote.jpg

And the results:
IMG07-1445VoteResults.jpg

And, in 1450, Sally wanted us to help him out:
IMG08-1450NoWarSally.jpg

Nah ~ we’ve got bigger fish to fry.

And a few more turns of moving workers and troops about, and that was that.

Here’s what we’ve got now:
IMG10-1475Army.jpg

This is ready and waiting for the DoW, which should start next turn, methinks.

We'll need to watch that eastern corridor:
IMG09-1465EasternCorridor.jpg

but there's nothing much over there now, so there’s not much to worry about.

In a side-note, look at the size of these german cities!
IMG11-1475Germany.jpg

As I am wont to do, i signed as many English cities as i could find w/the number of troops there, so keep that in mind, but don't shoot me if it's wrong.

Oh good, Fox is up next to apply the lash  What brainiac put fox after me?! Oh

I did not start the war at my inherited turns, as I am worried abt the southwest cities ... too little pikes for my comfort. Instead, I canceled OB with Churchill first. He has a few units running in our inner cities, I don't want an unfortunate teleportation to put these units near a vulnerable city.

A few turns later, I decided we are ready, and knocked on Nottingham:

ph09-AD1495-DoW.jpg

Yes, baldy, that means WAR!

Our worker-stealing knight revealed a new city just under our nose:

ph09-AD1495-Dover.jpg

Initial few battles happened as I predicted in our south-west cities. I cleared off some knights there, and won us a Great General.

ph09-AD1500-general.jpg

Since our former-capitol will be the main army producer, I settled the GG there. Then, the battle of Nottingham begins. It was a real bloodshed, with me sacrificing a few units to capture it finally:

ph09-AD1505-Nottingham.jpg

The result is a soaring war weariness ... time to whip relentlessly. By the way, try to get temples up to rid the redshirts. We have production bonuses for these temples, so each whip will produce more hammers.

The whole world is at war when Bismarck and Rammes declared on Sally.

ph09-AD1515-world-war.jpg

Too bad we are too busy to join in ... but maybe we should when one of them come asking.

The next few turns will be critical, as Churchill learn gunpowder (and thus is one-up vis-a-vis our units). He has a respectable force in Dover, presumably to sneak attack on out eastern city.

ph09-AD1525-sit.jpg

I moved a second stack towards Dover. This should force him to hold off his invasion launch from Dover. Our main stack stack reached the hill outside London. The only thing is the lack of siege engines, so keep whipping them.

Our western cities are enjoying relative peace after initial fending off of English knights. Most likely that is because Churchill is weary of QSH's forces coming from the west.

nice turns there, fox. Are we lacking completely in seige weapons or do we only have a few? I'd load it up, but won't have time until tomorrow night most likely, so . . . pretty please :D

I'm traveling back to the UK today so I will be unable to play until Monday PM, (UK time) at the earliest, and more lightly Tuesday evening.
So, if I'm up during that time, feel free to skip me.
If I'm not skipped by the time I can play, I'll post the gotit right before I play.

I got it. Should be able to play tonite or tomorrow.

Wow, saying that we're in a bad situation would be understating it :p The English has enough troops to wipe us out, luckily they're stupid enough to be content with them just sitting around.

Suprisingly, a builders turnset for me even in war mode.

Nothing changes, just hit enter.

The bombardment of London begins, and should last for thousands of years .... seriously, we need more trebs there, cuz we're hitting -2% with each pult and we've got 3 pults there AND it's defense is at 100%.

Moved our stack near Dover to the forested tile directly N of the city.

Education comes in, and I decided to get Gunpowder next to balance our power vs. Churchill.

Civ4ScreenShot0000-13.jpg

Ramses wants our help against Saladin, we can't really afford it right now so I turned him down. [Forgot the screenshot here]

Churchill got impatient and suicided several troops against both our stacks.

Ramses came and ask for help against Saladin again, and I turned him down a second time. He's still Friendly with us, but that might change if we keep turning him down. [Forgot the screenshot here too  ]

I had to move our stack from London a couple of tiles to help bring our trebs to the front line. This is probably a :smoke: move, but I want those siege engines to actually make it to the front line without being harassed.

Here are our situation at London. It looks smaller because Churchill moved some to Dover. It's ripe for the picking once our stack get back there in 2 turns.

Civ4ScreenShot0002-13.jpg

And at Dover, Churchill seems to be getting ready to send out a stack into our homeland.

Civ4ScreenShot0001-12.jpg

The next batch of siege engines (which are on their way to Nottingham) should be sent to Dover to take it down a notch or two at least.

Good luck to the next player.

nice set, but too bad no smashy-smashy for you! hey team, do you think we could work it so that Beserks NEVER gets to war?

that's a fair size stack @ dover, and i'm not so sure we have enough at home to take it out if it moves. Our best hope may be to take london, take peace, and prepare for rd 2.

Actually, both Nottingham and Teotihuacan have a decent amount of troops that just needs a little upgrade. Join them up with the current stack outside Dover and we have enough to handle Churchill's SOD.

He's got 10 Knights and 3 Phants, and we have at least 5 pikes currently (Nottingham and stack) for them and the rest should take care of themselves, especially if we soften them up a bit with the trebs and pults already there.

BTW, my turnset was so *riveting* that I forgot to mention that Churchill's western city also has a lovely sizeable stack that we need to watch out for.

Well everyone, i played my turns and here is the report!

Just after hitting enter, saladin takes an egyptian city
Civ4ScreenShot0013-1.jpg

That leaves him with an open passage to our undefended cities
We are not at war with him yet of course, but he is pretty annoyed with us.

But worry not! .. Ranses signs peace with him a couple turns later and...

Backdoor is closed :goodjob:

I tried to take advantage at the peace party that the pharaon was throwing at his humble gold & marble covered temple... I gave him a few drinks (i took water) and we started to talk about women, sports, and other stuf... Right there when i thought i had his trust i pop this request...

damn... failed miserably! I excused myself saying that i had a war to attend and left that stupid party!

We took london at the loss of uncountable units (6 sige probably, and 4 or 5 melee). We have a really nice siege stack in nottingham, and melee gathering there, so thy can get in war in a few turns.

At the "Last train to london" party i was throwing out at my humble stone covered in gems palace, i ordered the buckler to always keep Ramses glass full, by the time he was dancing partially naked over the mud, y popped the question!

i made this deal with qui... he already has 4 sources of iron, i have no idea why he came asking for more. cancel this whenever u like.

I stopped at 9 turns because i noticed this:
Civ4ScreenShot0030-1.jpg

Churchill has a nice stack of grenies, we are 40 turns awar form chemistry.
This will be a very nice moment to sign peace, but i dont know if that means we have to give london away (as its revolting as we speak).

On other notes:

*I decided to build the heroic epic in our former capital, iknow that we dont have room for another nat wonder now, but i thought we need the troops now, as this is probably the turning point of this game. (sorry no screen)
* at the save there might be units moving, i dont know how to cancel all the queued moves.
*I settled another GG at our former capital.

Wow, now THAT'S a stack . . . gotta love Agg AI

nice turns, Crotazzo. :goodjob: on taking London ~ i think now's the time for peace, though. That stack is quite impressive, and i wouldn't be surprised if winston redeclared on us after 10 turns with it. I'm not entirely sure we could stand up to it.

it seems like we need to grow a bit to improve our tech rate, and head for maybe cavs or something else to give us an advantage on the field. We also could just try to send our army towards Sally, but again, i don't trust churchill at all.

I started playing, and taken out a couple of units but I think we have to go for piece. We're 4 techs away from military trad and a different 4 from riffling.
We're 2 techs from grenadears too.

So, I'm going to sign a piece treaty with Winston. The only question is, do we try to defend agains a declare from him after, or focus our stack in one place and try to hurt him.

The grens have shock, drill and city-def, so they will take our macemen apart. The only unit that will come close to the grens will be a pinched knight, and we don't have many level2 knights around.

I think I'll focus the troops on defence of the southern city, get a treaty with winston, and try to build the economy up. I really don't think we'll win a war with Winston any time soon.

I may play in a couple of hours, or tomorrow night. I'd really like some thoughts from the rest of the team as to which way to go. We could loose it on this turnset. :undecide:

this has been my problem w/Agg AI from the very beginning ~ SO many troops. And w/a better AI, it's a better stack! I think peace is the way to go here, and then configure our defenses based on Churchill's movements (let's get a couple spies there ASAP).

Playing now, and here's some initial thoughts. Please tell me if I'm :smoke:

Currently we've got the city governer in most places going on food, presumably to whip up the army we've got now.

I think our whipping days are more or less numberd in most places now, we need to get some economy going to stand a chance of catching up in tech. Possibly a couple more city sites if anyone wants to dot map where they can fit in.

I'll be doing a builder round I think as well as getting the defenses in the south sorted out and some spies there.

Also, I've stopped a lot of worker actions. i'm not sure why woods were being chopped around 4 squares from texcoco or why we've got farms being build outside of the BFC of anywhere, and no crops that need irrigation. Please tell me if I've missed the reason :-) We need more roads to link up our new cities, and help the forces move around some more.

EDIT: I'm not sure chemestry is the best route either. By the time we get grens, Winston will be nearly at redcoats I'd have thought. How about banking/economics ?
I'll change to baking, but will be checking here regularly as I play incase anyone shouts :-)

EDIT2: Late now, and I'm half way through the turnset. Will finish up tomorrow night for sure.

Personally, I consider the HE in former-capitol a :smoke:. The reason why it is producing troops is whip. That is the only city where we can whip to our heart's content without adverse effect on our economy. HE should had been started somewhere else.

Defense is the way to go, I think. The AI is still not smart enough in attack, Blake or no Blake.

Builder's turnset is fine, just continue to whip the former capital please. Keep the troops pumping, reinforce south and west.

Also pump the Hindu missionary, and the religion which we have shrine.
