PH09: The King and We

Ok, got it. You're right, the English are planning something. I'll see what I can do.

well, i saved us 3gpt w/the deleted galley, so there. tbh, i didn't realize that peak prevents from going up north. ahh well . . .

What do we do from here? grow and focus on a long-term war, or try to keep going w/ample use of the whip??

Took a spun around the cities, I didn't change anything just realigning our forces along the English border just in case. I also queued up the Palace at Fox's suggested site since we have a few forest around it to help it along.

Livy came around to tell us that we're pathetic.

Civ4ScreenShot0000-12.jpg

Bismark wants iron for sugar ... that's not a very fair trade considering he's planning something against us.

Civ4ScreenShot0001-11.jpg

Then Qin wants us to stop trading with Churchill ... I thought about it, but I don't want to anger Churchill until we're ready for him.

Civ4ScreenShot0002-12.jpg

Look what Churchill is doing in our front yard

Civ4ScreenShot0003-13.jpg

Orleans wants to join the English ... no way

Civ4ScreenShot0004-11.jpg

We have a good event here

Civil Service came in

Another random event ... too bad it's not on any workable tiles

Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg

I played 15 peace turns mostly building units and some buildings. Here's the situation at Churchill's doorstep

Civ4ScreenShot0019.jpg

We also have another stack to the east. I've also spread Taoism around our cities, and we only have 2 cities left without Taoism and their missionaries are being produced due in 3 more turns.

Hi,

Some nice trades there, that's really helped the money situation.

I've had a look at the save, and we seem to still have problems. We're not getting any worse, but I'm sure we're still looking like a great target for other civs :(

It's only Bismark and Churchill we're far behind or. We're within 100 pts or so of the others so it's not lost by any stretch. Churchill looks like he's thinking of taking us right now, which isn't good. But, we're 8 turns away from macemen, although I'm not sure we've got anywhere that can churn them out. We'll still have to keep whipping I think, which will keep our cities small, and economy in the dolldrums.

What we really need is for chuchill to think bismark is a good target, but I've no idea how to do that.
We also really need to pickup Drama for the heroic epic.

It's time to decide what kind of victory we're going to shoot for too. Is it too late to try cultural ? We have 3 religions within our border, and cheep temples, it's just a question if we can do it before Bismark reaches the stars.

I think we need to get some spies out too. we need some for counter espionage, and some to explore, and steal the odd tech.

Anyone any other ideas ?

good turns, beserks. nice job on trying to improve our financial situation.

i agree on your assessment for the next set Simon, though i odn't know if we should go for churchill just yet. certainly having 3 empires worth of land will do us well regardless of what sort of win we want.

Played 15 turns, here is the report.

Nothing much happened in this turnset, and we could build a few maces without being attacked by churchill

This was a builders turnset, i tried to build granaries and acueducts, as well as markets where needed.

Somewhere in the turnset hinduism spread to our lands, and noticed that building hindu temples and monasteries would give us +2:hammers: (why is that?)

Finished the palace, which gave us +6:science:. I think we should build maoi statues in our former capital, but i leave that for discussion.

Machinery came in, and i :smoke: and chose drama instead of literature, so we lost like 5 turns there (sorry), on the other hand, theaters are a cheap culture source for the pressured cities.
Civ4ScreenShot0009-2.jpg

Refused both of this trades:
Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0010-2.jpg

I sent an archer to do some scouting towards england, and here is the result

Civ4ScreenShot0011-1.jpg

I didnt noticed another big stack in england lands, but he does have at least 3-4 axe/sword/mace in his important cities.

NOTES: Finished building a spy, but i dont know how to use him
Theres a barb archer that will probably pillage some sheeps next turn, he killed an axe that was already damaged from another barb attack (both attacked the same turn)

good turns, there. feel better about our situation from the last time you played?

I don't know if we have it in us, w/the land we have, to come from behind in a tech race, so I wonder if we shouldn't be preparing more for another war, and not wait for churchill to attack us. London would make a nice prize. any other thoughts??

i like to have spies in every city, but don't know how anybody else uses them -- it's one of the many low-points for me in the game.

i'm also still in favor of changing religions to either of the big 2, and since hinduism has +2 hammers, maybe we should go that way?? the other option, w/our 3 religions, is culture, but . . .

yes, it really felt better. In fact we are aproaching from behind and now we are even in score with qui i think.
A war with england will have to wait until we get the heroic epic, and gather some gold to upgrade units to maceman.. with a 20 units stack we surely can take notthingam and london, the question is if we can keep them
We will have to change to another religion rather soon, hindu is in 1 of our cities only, so if swiching is the team concensus, next turnset will have to emphasaize a bit in spreading the faith.

In my opinion we wont have any chance to win this by culture, ww dont have wonders, nor temples, not even commerce to get the most out of the culture slider.

How about the maoi statues in our former capital? anyone is thinking on others 2 national wonders?

IIRC, we don't need to be in Hinduism to enjoy the +2 bonus, so why bother with switching religion?

Nat Epic is definitely on former capital. Maoi is fine (no other better candidate) there as well.

Definitely a war with England for me. We have to rely on the whip (pretty wasteful not to when you are Crazy Monty) and HR-happy again. It gets better since the Renaissance Era units are more costly, we don't need to MM as much to keep whipping 2 pops.

i, too, think we need to be a bit more bloodthirsty with our people ~ quetzlcoatl requires fresh sacrifices to stay happy

has simon said got it?

Sorry, I didn't know I was upon deck.
I'm going to have to ask for a skip now, I'm traveling for work this week and it's a crazy schedule.

I *might* get a chance tonight (east coast time) but if someone else posts a gotit, I'll skip.

Sorry for the short notice.

[EDIT]
It seemed like there were atleast 3 turnsets until my turn, and here it is 36 hours ago !! :(

Looking at the map, it looks like London and notinghamm would be a good citys to take and nicely seal our borders, but we'll be up against protective longbow-men and crossbows won't we ?

I think spreading and switching to hindu would be useful. If we went islam, we'd just be on the same side as the leaders which isn't going to help a world war at all. If we're hindu, and look like a target, we can try to persuade the other two islam nations to join in the great struggle.

As for the spys, having one in each city is a good long term goal, to help detect enemy spies. or depending on our EPs, it could still be worth trying to steal some techs, not sure if we have enough EPs against anyone though. I don't have the game infront of me. (wrong OS right now)

Turn0:

OK, I miss remembered the religion situation.
If we go hindu, then Saladin will be really pissed at us, but I think Churchill sees us as a target anyway, so that'; no loss.
If we go Islamic, then I don't think we'll get enough brownie points with either saladin or churchill to make a difference. So, it's hindu or nothing.

I whip finish a couple of things. Set a couple of places to build spys when they are finished their current build.
I switch the new capitol to a Hindu missionary as we need that spread. And the satatues at the old capitol. I do a 1 pop whip to get the overflow too.

Turn1: 281 1305AD.
Oooo. Now we've got hindu in a city, there's a vote in the AP. Bismark is still a way to go, but ram has voted for quin. Not sure if we can persuade them to vote for us, but I think we need to spread hindu inside out area to increase voting power. That's how it works isn't it ?

pic1.jpg

turn2 282 1310AD
literature is in, I'm not sure where we want to go next. I've set research towards gunpower via guilds
pic2.jpg

turn3 283
saladin . declares on quin. Not sure why though.
pic3.jpg

turn4 284
Saladin asks us to join in agains quin. Nah, I think not. I think we want to be on the other side anyway.
We find silver near Tlatelolco, and it's already mined :)

pic4.jpg

turn 5 285
Saladin's after us turning to islam.
No, not today thanks.
I think there's a couple of city spots that may be useful, so I order up a new settler in far northeastern city to have on standby.

I used our Great General on a woodsman3 jag, so we're not got a healer who'll do +40%/+25% Hope that's the right thing to do...
pic7.jpg

The english seem to be skipping Vasalage, in favour of compass. Which is good

turn 6. 286 1330ad

not a lot.

turn 7 287
Whip a couple more maces. send them down to the capitol.

turn8 288
What is winston doing sending these guys just south-east of orleans. , I'm not sure I like this mini stack snooping around.

I trade iron to bismark for stone to finish the statues quicker. Remember to cancel this in 10 turns.
pic5.jpg

I also get engineering from quin for col and burocracy.
pin6.jpg

I always think it's funny that when we get engineering, our forces can go further on our friends roads as well as our own.

And I revolt into hindu as I think there'll be another vote coming up soon, and I guess we've got to be hindu to get it. And it may help relations with quin/ram/bismark.

289: those pacidurms are still wandering about. now they are heading towards quin. Do you think churchil is going to declare on quin too. I do hope so. Then we can take notingham and london of him while his main forces are to the north. (We'll need a bit more defence in the north west though.

OK. I think I can only play 10 turns tonight. It's 11pm, local time, and still feels like it's 4am for me.

Hopefully I can get these pics uploaded. ...

I think it's going to have to happen. to get close to bismark.
I was hoping that Winston would initiate things with us, (or Quin so we can then jump in)
There's a few maces dotted around the empire, we could probably swap out defenders with the jags and axes.

Hindu has spread to about half our empire now, we still can't run theocracy to get the XP boost. No one will trade us theology. :(

There's a settler building in the north-east city so we can pop a city down to fill in any gaps and stop the AI doing the same, or send into the far north for the marble/silver near the barb city.

Good turns :goodjob:

Although, I wouldn't have traded metal resources to anyone to keep the advantage, but that's just me and my SP games :p

yes, good turns, simon.

if we remember to end the deal after 10 turns, i don't think it'll be a bad deal for us. i still say we keep up the warring, whipping whenever and as much as possible to help us along.

Thanks to BUG, I won't forget...

The next AP vote was Religious Leader. I checked nobody voted for Bismark last time, so I thought it's safe to go for the +2 relation. He almost did it :mischief:
