[GS] Phoenicia Discussion Thread

If the game has got to the point where you're frantically hopping the capital to frustrate a dominating army... you have lost anyway. It really isn't a big deal.

I think most people are excited about it from the perspective of the dominator trying to eradicate Phoenicia because it keeps relocating its capital.

Frustration is a big de-motivator.

This means that people will actively avoid trying to conquer Dido's capital til the very end, giving you much more time to prepare a counter.

I think the power more lies in hoping your capital over to a different continent and giving every city in your home continent 25% gold, 15% growth and 10% production. It’s fairly substantial.

Also it could be irritating for a strong domination Civ. If Dido quietly moved herself to a two hex city, made it her capital, threw a cothon in and slowly built up an army of boats that heal up every turn, that capital would be VERY difficult to take.
(Though you are right in that if she were in that situation, she’s likely not going to win haha)

It’s mostly the comedy value. Obviously, the real practical implication is the efffects of all those cards and perks that apply to non-capital continents.

Nice to see a classic civ mechanic appear again. I like that Phoenicia has bonuses that don't appear readily powerful.

Yeah, a lot of the fun comes from combining the bonuses with the game and seeing power wellspring from that.

And I think the expansion itself might hold a few surprises that are cute for Dido (e.g Diplomatic points or power for cities not on your capital?). Here’s hoping :)

Wait does the root for Phonetic/Phone/etc. derive from whatever the greeks used to refer to Phoenicia or do they just sound a like?

It's a coincidence. Greek φωνή is a nominalization of the verb meaning speak.

I know there's no precedent in Civ 6 (that I can think of), but I kind of wish it was an optional "prerequisite" for mathematics. That way you could take the harbor way there or the CH way there.

afaik, only Civ IV implemented that feature (alternate pre-req.). It was great, but it got dropped (maybe they found it was too complex to follow?).

Civ-VI scenario could be done in a softer way (e.g. leaf techs being eurekas for other techs), but it would require several eurekas per tech. I’ve seen several posts suggestions towards this, but I doubt we’ll see it unless a new expansion (honestly, it woud probably require quite a bit of testing and balancing)

I think I'd find that extremely tedious. I'm glad Civ V introduced capital-sniping as the conquest mechanic, because destroying every last pathetic city the AI has built in the middle of nowhere is no fun at all .

This only works against a human player, and I somehow can't see this becoming a game-changing tactic there either—your opponent either has the power and opportunity to conquer you or they don't. It's more frustrating to be the one on the losing end of the war, so I can't see myself having much patience for this monkey business when the game is over for me anyway.

Well, of course. I was just a little perplexed by how excited people are getting over this Domination clarification in particular.

Since the move capital project is like 100 prod, it probably won't be that easy to move to the middle of nowhere cities at a whim.

and you need the cothon first ;)

You would hope that she has Cothon in all her cities, but it is an additional cost!

From a domination cost, there could be an application to people who play teams and Dido could hot potato her capital while her teammate cranks out a science win or w/e.

It’s pretty niche but it’s a nice little add on which might elicit a chuckle now and then. Particular if you can your original capital a conquered city. Dido and her Original Capital of London lol

When playing with friends sometimes it isn't all about winning yourself, it is more about making sure that Dave doesn't.

Because let's be honest here, screw Dave, he is a real turd in the punch bowl.

Moving the cap will be expensive enough that I doubt you're going to want to do it too often, but hopefully stays cheap enough that you're willing to do it a couple times to get the boosts from it.

Ha, nice idea. Play with Phoenicia and Ottomans with a friend. Get yourself with Dido a single city as capital. Make your friend put Ibrahim inside your capital, then he don't get any loyalty problem from you, and you get more bonuses for production. Live you two together in a single landmass and win easily defensibly.
