[GS] Phoenicia Discussion Thread

I'm underwhelmed, going to be one of the last civs I play. No trade focus? No unique luxury? Meh.

They do get about 4 extra trade routes and route protection. Yeah, Mali probably gets more in the end.

They seem a little bit meh, I was hoping for something a little cooler for the final revealed civ.

This kind of sums up my thoughts on Phoenicia. They aren't bad, but they don't live up to some of the hype we had built for ourselves.
"Phonecia is being saved for last, because it is going to be SOOOO awesome!" - Civfanatics Forumites

Of course, it also hurts some of the hype since we had the entire list spoiled. Returning staple civs from the previous versions should be a big deal, all by themselves. These last 2 reveals (Ottomans and Phoenicia) would have been a lot more "oh thank god they are in" without the spoilers.

They seem like they'll be fun to play, of course the general boost to naval trade routes will make them good - but nothing here jumps off the page as a must play. They will fall in the middle of the pack for me on when I eventually get around to playing them.

It's mutually exclusive with the Market though.

True, but you get really good adjacency bonuses by having a city, harbor, and market in a triangle (preferably on a river with two sea resources next to the harbor). The lighthouse is a very useful building. It makes coastal tiles more useful as well.

Dido was voted "most likely to get wiped out early by human players" in high school.

But then she just moved her capital.

This was the civ they forgot in R&F. One that actually makes interesting use of the loyalty mechanic. Jumping capitals to new lands to defensively hold onto new cities or jumping it closer to other civs in an aggressive loyalty flip manner. Very interesting mechanic, but it totally an RF civ, has no place in the GS mechanics.

Good point. I wonder what held it up. It could have just been programming issues with moving the capital.

Actually....a very good point. Does Phoenicia leverage on any GS mechanics?

I think it's currently 1 additional pressure per pop in the capital, on top of the normal pressure, which is based on the type of age (so 0.5, 1 or 1.5).

I guess it'll be easier to pick off the outlying areas of various empires... Even just moving to a border city could be pretty effective at the margins.

Given how much of a problem the maoris look like they have with loyalty they may not like Dido much at all...

No, completely wiped out. Forward-settling and loyalty immunity isn't going to fly with me.

The more I think about it the more annoyed I am with their take on Phoenicia. Oh well, they did pretty good with most of the civs for this expansion so overall I'm satisified.

haha. Just call Dido the Kupe killer.

While it's not my playstyle, I feel that it works pretty well illustrating Phoenician history. I would have liked a bit more trade focus perhaps.

Unique resources were terribly underwhelming in Civ V Indonesia, so I do not miss that mechanic.

Moving your capital to another continent has amazing synergy with the later game colony policies. Instantly supercharge your oldest and biggest cities simply by moving your capital off- continent and slotting the right cards.
