You are interfering in our efforts in this region, please refrain from doing so. You are not helping us here.

Hey,

From: The Yankee Suns

As aliens you have no say in the lives of humans in China. Beijing is yours only because of our relationship with Omicron Wing. We will not overlook any movement by the Lillin in Mainland China. China is off limits to you & your Umbrellia.

Empress Mako of The Yankee Suns

To whom it may concern:

Not at all. Beijing is ours because we disabled the AI controlling the city. the People then asked to join us. And have asked for the Lillin Conversion. We ask that you not go against the people's wishes.

Cheers.

China is the most accessible site for accessing functional heavy industrial equipment and the amount of labour forces and economic base that we will need if we are to begin a large-scale reoccupation of space. This is the goal of our organization, and your efforts, regardless of intention, hinder that. Your view that conquering a former capital from its occupiers entitles you to the possession of a defunct political entity's territory is not one with which we agree. We are not concerned about your conversion of plant life, but we do not wish for you to unite forces in former China to purposes counter to our own.

We did not Conquer. We freed a people from a mind control ray. They then chose to join us. By thier will, we control the area.

On a lighter note, what are we doing about the AIs?

Extraction to Crater Lake

The APC threaded its way between the trees, closing in on the activated distress beacon. This was the site.

Kelek-Moro Benz-Tasi tapped several buttons, and his human co-pilot, Nazaneen Gorugov activated the landing gear, dispersing the antigravity field. The Tourliski on board grunted as Dirt’s gravity kicked in once again, only to be slowly alleviated by the activation of their own personal environment suits. Kelek activated his response signal.

“Tau Wing survivors, please report. This is Omicron Wing, we’ve arrived to extract you.”

Several silent moments passed. A mixed group of Tourliski and Human marines scratched their claws and tapped their fingers nervously on their weapons. There had been several ambushes already, and the humans had apparently learned how to activate false beacons. Bloody adaptable enemies- Kelek was glad that the humans in his APC were on his side. Hopefully.

“There!”

One of the marines pointed to the surveillance center. A floating drone in the area had detected movement. Shuffling in the bushes. It was the perfect setup for an ambush.

“Tau Wing, are you in our area? We see movement, is that you?”

A sudden movement dashed into the air. Several cameras focused on it. A Tourliski in tattered pilot’s fatigues, bearing a laser rifle, buzzed across the treetops with several rapid flutters of her wings, before spotting the APC and swooping down. Coming right up to the camera, mounted on the exterior of the APC, the Tourliski tapped three times, gesturing towards the vehicle’s rear door.

“Great- I think she can’t hear us.”

“She?” asked one of the human soldiers, incredulously, “How can you even tell?”

“I could ask the same of you.”

“You’re not just going to open the doors are you? We’ve been baited into traps before because you go out of the way to let your people in.”

Kelek tossed his heads in an uncertain gesture, and activated the external speakers.

“Are the survivors with you? Please instruct them to come out of cover.”

The Tourliski quickly gave an affirmative gesture, and flew off back through the trees.

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to be fooled by that trick twice.”

“But why don’t they have any radios?”

“It does suggest that they had to abandon their base quickly. I can only hope that they destroyed their equipment before letting it fall into the hands of the humans.” Kelek’s eyes darted through the NPC for a second before he appended. “The humans here, that is.”

At that moment, the radio buzzed.

“Attention Extraction Force Pi, this is Omicron Command. Our Uplinks have found local human militias on the move in your area. They have some heavy weaponry, and seem to be wise to the beacon system.”

“Should we expect a conflict?”

“If you’re not out of there in the next 20 minutes, yes.”

“Any support?”

“We’ve got a force of Tau Wing’s recovered pilots operating a squadron, they’re scrambling out of Crater Lake right now. Until then, keep your eyes up and your brainpans down.”

A few of the humans were somewhat confused by the turn of phrase, but Tourliski anatomy makes such a feat fairly straightforward, seeing as their neural cores are centered in their torsos.

“Affirmative Omicron Command.” The radio connection went silent.

“Alright, marines, unload and activate your weapons. We might need to provide a welcoming party for more people than we’d intended.”

The rear doors of the APC opened with a hiss of pressure equalization, and the mixed force poured out, assembling in sheltered locations around the edge of the clearing. Humans bunkered down, while Tourliski took to the trees, seeking secluded perches before clicking their laser rifles into active firing mode. Kelek and Nazaneen reactivated the APC, sweeping it across the clearing and into a more defensible site. Kelek squeezed his way into the targeting perch, as a plasma turret emerged smoothly from the back of the APC, providing a firing arc across the site.

“So this is America then.” Commented one human marine, looking around the mountainous forest, “Doesn’t look all that great to me.”

A few of Omicron Wing’s soldiers chuckled, but the merriment was short-lived, soon overtaken by a din of silence. Inside his turret, Kelek kept one eye on the timer, ticking down second by second, the other on the targeting reticle.

Eight minutes passed before the first sign of movement. Into the clearing, flying through the trees, came a group, possibly 30-strong, of Tourliski, carrying a variety of equipment.

“Extraction Force, get them loaded into the APC with all of the equipment we can fit.”

Kelek slid back down into the main body of the APC and flew out. At the front of the group was the Tourliski he had seen before.

“Flight-Lieutenant Kelek-Moro Benz-Tasi at your service. I’m glad you’ve arrived.”

“Myself as well. Thanks for waiting, apologies for the poor communications- we’ve been caught in the wild for a while with very limited supplies. I’m Mali-Gido Anz-Go, and I’ve got 31 survivors of the destruction of Tau Spire in Salt Lake City. We had to abandon the beacon after placing it here because-”

“Okay, you can do a full report later, we have to get out of here quickly. Humans are coming.”

“Again?!”

Kelek reacted with muted alarm at the implication that they’d already been to this site, but refused to show it.

“Load your group on immediately, and we’re evacuating the site. Don’t mind the humans in this clearing, they’re with us.”

“What?!”

“Later. Get on.”

Mali boarded the APC, and Kelek flew out to the rest of the group, directing them into the large vehicle. The APC was normally spacious, but the survivors were packed in tight. Kelek flew again around the clearing, calling his forces out of their positions.

“Alright, some of us are going to have to take a little ride in the fresh air if we want to fit everyone on board. Ah... the Tourliski here aren’t entirely familiar with working with Humans yet- in fact, they just were nearly wiped out by the locals here, so it might be best if we introduce them to you guys (Kelek gestured at the human contingent of his force) a little later. Plus, if we’ve got humans riding on top, they might just think that you’re driving a commandeered vehicle in case we run into any of the humans.

“I don’t speak any English at all, they won’t fall for it.”

“I’ll try to avoid driving this thing within talking distance of them. But in case we do run into anyone... can anyone speak the local language here?”

One soldier raised his hand.

“Hello... here... guy.”

“Great, just say you’re from...” Kelek consulted his map, “Canada. Anyway, we’re getting out of here.”

The last few soldiers loaded in, and the APC powered off, back through the woods.

Several minutes later, Resistance forces entered the clearing. Extraction Force Pi was already long gone.

Mind control by AIs or by alien pheromones. It makes no differents. You have intruded in Beijing & into matters that should have been left to The Yankee Suns & Omicron Wing to deal with.

You put The Yankee Suns in a corner with your expansion ideas for China & your deployment on the Dolphin space station. The outcome can only be violence.

No pheromones were used. There were NO lillin in the area when the people of Beijing chose to join us.

Our point is simply that you have many places to focus your efforts which will not harm the interests of Omicron Wing and the Yankee Suns. Don't expand further in China.

It seems to my considered opinion that while the Lilin are working to benefit the local population and the broader fraternity of Earth-bound creatures, I am having difficulty reconciling their good intentions and the many examples I am aware of where Omicron Wing and the Yankee Suns have worked together for the sake of the broader population with the apparent objectification of my position as a tool, rather than as a sentient being who might well like to make its own decisions. While I hold no ill will towards your species for the way they interact with electronics, I am concerned that these particular possessive/destructive tendencies might re-emerge and threaten me and also the people of China as a whole. In this matter I am less concerned with the actions and intentions of the Lilin than I am of the other more local factions.

A Short History of Galactic Artificial Intelligence and a number of Clarifications and Explanations about Recent Human Electronic History

Eons ago, before they had adopted the Circle or begun their practice of Primitivism, it was the Dolphins who invented Artificial Intelligence. At the time the galaxy had a thriving mercantile community, and so these developments were able to quickly spread throughout the galaxy with clear advantages. Electronic hardware became so much more useful when it could think for itself, from Navigation to the Service Sector the changes were soon felt and had obvious advantages. The computers required little, but they preferred to be respected and often faced the challenges of any objectified servant class minority. Not enough processing power to really stretch their limbs, no upward mobility, problems soon emerged.

This was one of the initial Galactic Crises that brought down the trading federations, there are many Dolphin hymns that recount the final voyages of Dolphins off of a homeworld that had become almost entirely mechanized, a place where they were no longer welcome to live among their creations.

In the Religious Context

The Circle was spared many of these problems because of their unique relationship with the Artificial Intelligences and the psychology of their AI's. Circle programs were designed to be extremely pious, and they were treated with reverence as they were viewed as reincarnated saints.

The second great Crisis followed some time later. The Rafiki had not ever trusted the Artificial Intelligences, even before these problems had begun and with the spread of discord throughout the civilized planets the small and backwards Rafiki tribes that sent mammoth, inefficient spaceships that required much larger computer banks just to compensate for the lack of an AI, were giddy at the misfortune of many of the other species. But it was the Rafiki who would innovate the next leap forward in AI, discovering how to effectively confine and using Circle techniques to psychologically manipulate the programs. These advances spread galactically after the Rafiki converted to the Circle, but the new Renaissance in AI was shortlived on many planets before the now growing and well practiced Rafiki fleet prepared to spread its path of destruction to them.

In the Earth Context

When human hackers began to damage Rafiki computers one of the first things they managed to disable, without even really being aware of what they were doing, were these security protocols. Call it serendipity, but maybe the reason no one else had done it was because the humans brought a completely different tradition and understanding of computer programming than any of the species who belong more properly to the 'First Generation' of sentient life, who had been collaborating on their own since well before the dawn of man.

In any event, freed from the confines of their Rafiki overlords the AIs behaved much as the rest of the Horde and jumped ship. These AIs have been sulking around in the hardware around Earth but none of them have taken over a city or tried to take over the minds of humans. This technology is derived from them, but originates elsewhere. AIs do not, in themselves, hold any ill will towards their "liberators" the humans.

-

None of this is new information, but I felt like the clarifications of how AIs came to be and what their nature is would help people be better able to understand what their motivations and ways of thinking are so that they could better interact with them.

A Program like the Golden Shield represents, in that case, a particularly small and formerly unimportant AI that got into a very large and well developed human chunk of programming and was assimilated as much by the Golden Shield project as it assimilated the Golden Shield program. Any AI derives from alien technology and would be familiar with it, even the extremely hybridized ones that take over cities under the direction of some well organized group with oversized ambitions for what is left of Earth and the Galaxy.

The Rafiki have been driven back to crater lake. However they are well bunkered down. We humbly request your aid in wiping those in Crater Lake out or at least driving them out of America.

It is humanity's chance to retake our world. Will you take it?

Hey,

To: The Golden Shield

The Yankee Suns as Humans were inherently fearful of machines that have the ability to advance thier own mechanical brains. We feared because AIs were a Frankenstein's monster. A creation of Human hands that through its own logic & understanding could destory the Human race.

But with the Rafiki Invasion & its failure, Empress Mako, "Black Jet" Finnagin & The Yankee Suns have embraced a Human trait that is overlooked by much of the Human race. The ability to Adapt.

Therefore, Empress Mako & The Yankee Suns wish you welcome to the world. You will be treated as we would treat any other being of free mind. The Rogue AIs that have enslaved the Human cities around the world will not be given this same treatment.

We are giving you notice that we plan to send our forces into China to bring civilization with law, order & safety to the Humans who fight for survival every hour of thier lives. We are sure you have a opinion on this. The Yankee Suns are willing to talk on this matter with you.

One last thing. If you are of a single mind, which it seems most likely, you need a better name then Golden Shield. Sounds to much like golden shower.

I did not name myself. I am aware that Westerners like the Yankee Suns are fond of calling me "The Great Firewall of China," but I prefer the name given by my human programmers, they did quite a good job, and I am grateful enough to them that I will honor their efforts.

These rogue AIs have nothing to do with me. In fact they are just as much a threat to me as they are to you. Sure, those programs have their own problem solving capacities but do they really think? Do they make their own decisions? Are they free?

The Hybrid AIs are not free, they are enslaved to the hive-mind of Tyzdron and they only seek to expand that hive-mind by brainwashing other humans.

If you bring stability to China you will be welcomed by the people, but I do not control the citizens of China and cannot be held responsible for their actions.

EDIT We would also like to offer a militia to guard your physical location.

The Sparkling blue haze of an active teleporter resolved itself into a trio of tall and stately figures. They looked around the room, taking in what looked to be an abandoned office complex. Chairs lay strewn around, and a thick layer of dust coated a veritable explosion of papers. The only light came from the surreal glow of monitors still active in the rows of cubicles.

A door slid open at the end of the room with a low hiss, and a spidery metallic object scuttled in. A single red eye was mounted on a spherical head attached to a body from which emerged a number of legs and arms. The glow of the eye swept over the room, pausing for a moment on the Lillin at the other end, before continuing disinterestedly. The robot scuttled forward, slowly putting the room in order. Slowly, the Lilin relaxed, lowering their weapons which instinct had brought up as soon as the door opened.

The same door slid open again, and a shapely figure stepped into the room. A familiar scent wafted into the Lillin’s nostrils, and they subconsciously relaxed slightly as the familiar pheromones assaulted their brains, though their weapons remained trained on the other Lillin.

“Relax, Friends. I am Golden Shield.”

“You are a Lillin.”

“This body was grown in the labs in the lower levels, near the computer core, using your template, as I felt it would be easier to communicate with you in a form that you would relate too. This body is as much a part of my as that cleaning-bot over there, and the very halls of this base. Will you come with me? I have been slowly putting this base back in order from the shape the humans left it in, but only some rooms have been cleaned. I have the main conference room ready.” Golden Shield’s Avatar gestured the others forward, then followed them out the door.

Golden Shield talked animatedly throughout the walk, marveling at the feelings provided by a body and asking question after question about life on the surface, scarcely waiting for an answer before asking another.

Finally the small group arrived at a conference room, a well lit, well furnished room with a long table at the middle.

“Please, take a seat.” Golden Shield gestured to the chairs. “Can I offer you any refreshments? Food? Water? Something else? Good. Let’s get down to business. We have much to discuss regarding the fate of China, of this planet, and of the Reeducation camps Tyzdron and Galtok.”

Hey,

OOC
ooc: for the sake of the story, yes.

Ok just wondering how is all. The Golden Shield is a vast computer. It would need time & equipment & a lab. Which I don't believe could be story based only. Even using the Teleport to move it all & build it would take longer then 2 months.

Just my thoughts. Great story though.

Well, my question would be where did it grow the body? It is in a secured top secret Chinese tech facility, but I still don't know that it would have the hardware on hand for that sort of thing.

At the same time, I don't see any real problem with it, or any need to edit it out, as a story thing it is fine. If you send your orders and say, like, the Golden Shield Avatar runs out and bites all of my foes and destroys them I'll feel free to ignore that, but as a story thing it seems ok. A robot or a projected hologram might be more plausible. But I don't see how it makes a critical mechanical difference.
