Ahem.
I just wanted to necro this thread to say that this is looking more and more like a false alarm.
Apparently the entire real name thing is more or less completely optional. It wasn't some kind of "root out the trolls and hold them accountable" effort ( like Downtown was hoping ) but probably more like present day Steam. Basically you can do as much Real Name/Social Network integration as you like, including none at all. It probably won't be any different than Steam/Battle.net.
Anyhow, if they stick to that and don't start moving towards
forcingYouTubing the Real Name issue for a year or so ( also long enough for the game selection to get better, natch ) then I will give a purchase of the system serious consideration after all.
Also, screw the XboxOne
EDIT: As a compromise with people like Downtown: What if you could tick a box during matchmaking to put yourself on a "RealID only" channel? Similarly, what if World of Warcraft and such had a "real name" server? The world is actually big enough for us all to have what we want without pulling our rhetorical knives out, you know. People who are squeemish about "classic" gamer culture could simply avoid the anonymity supporting spaces and go to the ( probably
more as popular ) Real-name spaces. Stuff like Steam/PSN/WoW are large enough that splitting them this way would still leave tons of matchmaking options for both camps.
So much simpler than having a war of words, really.
