Hi all

Great to be back on the forums and hear Civ V is going to be released.

I just hope that this franchise is not going down the route of most other games these days with regards to add ons being in the form of DLC.

You only have to look at games like Silent Hunter V to see that it is going to be an unfinished product on release because the developers are only bringing the first half of the war (1939-1943) with the initial release and adding the other half and other uboats via DLC - meaning that you have to pay more etc.

I dont like that idea of having to shell out a few pounds (dollars) here and a few pounds there for new units, skins etc etc. (although I dont mind paying for an add-on which introduces a lot of new content later on.

There seems to be an increasing mentality with developers releasing extra content just to 'complete' the game when it should be complete on release.

Just my two pence.

Damnit, I read this as 'Please Sid- NO TLC' and wondered what the hell that would be about. Turns out it's about acronyms which I don't understand at all.

Some DLC would be ok. I would have preferred if Colonization was in DLC forum instead of a $30 "expansion". Scenario packages of any sort as DLCs is perfectly fine if it keeps the developers making add-ons. But things like unit packs and stuff that actually impacts gameplay should be left to free patches IMO.

I have a far more chilling concern. I fear some type of moronic MMORPG cross pollution. Want to play as the Romans? Then win 3 games on Noble as the Greeks first. Once you win 4 games on Prince as the Romans you can play the Egyptians! Please don't pollute Civilization with some ridiculous unlock scheme.

I also agree on this point. We should have a complete game with no BS story campaign were you have to unlock stuff by playing through the game (ala Rome Total War). I want everything open to me.

I have faith in the developers about every other aspect of the game - just concerned about the above-mentioned.

From a certain pov mods are downloadable content too. I would mind if a mod was released by Firaxis but I would be annoyed if an expansion is released that rally is a fix-up (like SimCity Rush Hour fixed all the transport errors from SimCity 4).

For morons like me: DLC = Downloadable Content
Yes, no DLC please (Dragon Age, I'm talking to you). Except if it's free. Stuff like mods for instance.

Point taken - although Mods are free and you can choose to download them. The problem I invision with official DLC is that it limits options for people who decide not to purchase the content when it comes to mods and MP for instance.

Different versions of the game may cause a split in the community, particularly the MP community. This will, in the end, also effect modability since the extra official content introduced by DLC may be required in some of the mods.

What does Sid have to do with it? Isn´t his involvement rather nonexistant these days?

Just like the leader you choose in Civilization is an embodiment of an abstract leadership principle guiding a civilization as a whole, and not an actual leader, Sid is the abstract embodiment of the Civilization development team. When you want to engage in diplomatic negotiations with Firaxis Games, you look at Sid's smiling face while negotiating.

I don't mind DLCs coming out six months after the game, perhaps as a 'for profit' content patch. You know, the Civ community got gyped with C3C when Atari cancelled funding for the final patch of C3C and we got stuck with several glaring bugs.

But no 128kb unlock keys for content already on the disc, and a BIG NO to cynical (here's your game for $50 but you need to spend another $20 on DAY ONE to get all the content we developed)

DLC should be a way for the community to fund content work that's done outside the expansions and core game development. A way for us to say, we'll pay you for more content, or to fix a bug. Not for 2k to make more money off of us.

I mean I'm already going to buy the collector's tin or whatever they plan :) so it's not like I'm not going to give them any money above and beyond the core price of the game :)

I heard they're going to hit us with Pay Per Month for online play (that's MP). I won't be paying a single cent for PPM! Oh no, what if there's no single player? I mean, with Civ going to Facebook maybe Civ5 is being made to tap into the same game servers. The only way to play Civ5 will be via PPM!!!!!

He's also the leader of the barbarians in civ4.

'We demand you give this to us in tribute!'
'Not on my watch!'
-1: You made an arrogant demand!

I trust Firaxis to make Civ V with a single player option and NO DLC! At least, no little upgrade-lets. Please, keep with the Expansion Pack system.

I also trust Firaxis to keep out what AlpsStranger called 'moronic MMORPG cross pollution'.

Sounds more like console pollution in my opinion, bu then again, the only mmo I've ever played is EVE-online.

As has already been mentioned, expansion packs are the only way for them to expand the game due to the way modding works.

DLC = small expansion packs... but how would you make an expansion "small"? It's not like you would sell the ability to have vassal states as DLC... mechanics just don't work with that.

Everything else you get in an expansion pack are things that modders do anyway. Extra civs, scenarios and mod packs. And nobody is going to buy a bunch of new civs for $2 or a scenario for $5.

Expansion packs are the only way that makes sense.

I'd welcome DownLoadable Content in the form of extras akin to "DVD Bonus Features". Like stuff that didn't make the final cut. Eye candy things. Alternate terrain sets used in testing (I liked some of the terrain in Civ4's pre-release pics). Stuff the dev's played around with but didn't include in the release. Dev, tester chats or other things giving us a window into their world. And more...

Free, bonus stuff. Things to help restore/reinforce fans goodwill towards the franchise.
Thats how I think DLC should be used.
