Every once in a while, you come across a prose or poetry passage that strikes powerfully at your emotions. Post some of your favorite passages that could be classified this way.

Here's one that I found today, while taking a practice AP test:

S.I.W. - Wilfred Owen

"I will to the King,
And offer him consolation in his trouble,
For that man there has set his teeth to die,
And being one that hates obedience,
Discipline, and orderliness of life,
I cannot mourn him."

I. The Prologue

Patting goodbye, doubtless they told the lad
He'd always show the Hun a brave man's face;
Father would sooner him dead than in disgrace, -
Was proud to see him going, aye, and glad.
Perhaps his Mother whimpered how she'd fret
Until he got a nice, safe wound to nurse.
Sisters would wish girls too could shoot, charge, curse,...
Brothers - would send his favourite cigarette,
Each week, month after month, they wrote the same,
Thinking him sheltered in some Y.M. Hut,
Because he said so, writing on his butt
Where once an hour a bullet missed its aim
And misses teased the hunger of his brain.
His eyes grew old with wincing, and his hand
Reckless with ague. Courage leaked, as sand
From the best sandbags after years of rain.
But never leave, wound, fever, trench-foot, shock,
Untrapped the wretch. And death seemed still withheld
For torture of lying machinally shelled,
At the pleasure of this world's Powers who'd run amok.

He'd seen men shoot their hands, on night patrol,
Their people never knew. Yet they were vile.
"Death sooner than dishonour, that's the style!"
So Father said.

II. The Action

One dawn, our wire patrol
Carried him. This time, Death had not missed.

We could do nothing, but wipe his bleeding cough.
Could it be accident? - Rifles go off...
Not sniped? No. (Later they found the English ball.)

III. The Poem

It was the reasoned crisis of his soul
Against more days of inescapable thrall,
Against infrangibly wired and blind trench wall
Curtained with fire, roofed in with creeping fire
Slow grazing fire, that would not burn him whole
But kept him for death's promises and scoff
And life's half-promising, and both their riling.

IV. The Epilogue

With him they buried the muzzle his teeth had kissed,
And truthfully wrote the Mother "Tim died smiling."

The Waste Land by T.S Eliot and his other works really speak to me. I discovered them in high school and what better place to read about a Waste Land while in one?

I have a good deal of the poem memorised. I was able to get a B on a paper I did in English class without having the poem even in front of me, which is odd as I usually have a copy on me.

Thanks. It's the perfect example of why I hate most modern poetry.

Anyways, here's one I like.

We make ourselves a place apart
Behind light words that tease and flout,
But oh, the agitated heart
Till someone find us really out.

’Tis pity if the case require

We speak the literal to inspire
The understanding of a friend.

But so with all, from babes that play
At hide-and-seek to God afar,

The only one of T.S. Eliot's poems that I find profound is "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"

This one reminds me of sixth grade, when our class had to memorize it as the poem of the week. We also split up the class and played a best of 7 world series that my half ended up losing after taking a 3-0 lead. Beat that Yankees!

The poem is simplistic and juveneille but fun.

The Outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day:
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play.
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, if only Casey could get but a whack at that -
We'd put up even money, now, with Casey at the bat.

But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,
And the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,
For there seemed but little chance of Casey's getting to the bat.

But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,
And Blake, the much despis-ed, tore the cover off the ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and the men saw what had occurred,
There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.

Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Casey's bearing and a smile on Casey's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt 'twas Casey at the bat.

Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance gleamed in Casey's eye, a sneer curled Casey's lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped-
"That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore.
"Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted someone on the stand;
And its likely they'd a-killed him had not Casey raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Casey's visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew;
But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, "Strike two."

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;
But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Casey wouldn't let that ball go by again.

The sneer is gone from Casey's lip, his teeth are clenched in hate;
He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out.

one of the most brilliant ones I have ever had the pleasure of reading is "The Imperfect Enjoyment" by John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester. gaudy, yes, so it won't pass the censorship filter. but witty and funny and enjoyable? hell yes.

It is btw from a sub-set of poems (about 13 if I remember correctly, one of them by Aphra Behn, the first female 'professional' poet of England) from English restoration literature, all with the same topic, premature ejaculation and/or not being able to experience the idealised romantic ideas of unifying souls - hence achieving ultimate bliss - through the physical act of love.

PS: I half-heartedly share the resentment towards modern/modernistic poetry, but it does serve a purpose. If the least of those is determining what is (good) poetry it is essential to reading poetry. But (as in prose) it also often breaks boundaries and some very enjoyable pieces of work have come from that. It is just as with pr0n, it depends how you look at it. Could you pleasure yourself while watching the Mona Lisa or the Venus de Milo? Some could, I guess, and there where times when they did (the second version of the Maya by Goya? it has been ages.... sorry) . Rochester's poems where once hidden gems of (it was argued) pornography. Reading and interpretating poetry is an art by itself, it all depends on how you look at it. The watermelon piece (if it is authentic, heck, even if it isn't and maybe even more so)? I'm sure there are dozens of lit profs who would have a field day with it, writing 30 pages and more of a detailed anylisis on it. Waste of time? maybe, but the same can be argued about writing about a shakespearean sonnet where the secondary literature already existing concerning the sonnet alone would fill a small library. If nothing less it would be an exercise :)
 
The watermelon poem is real.

It's true that one reason modern poetry may seem so bad is because we have to pick through all the crap that we've removed from more traditional poetry. But you get the sense that people just think that anything constitutes poetry, and that truly good poetry is not objective in any way, shape, or form, which is patently false. There's a lot of "screw all convention and rules" type of deal, and most people who do that are amatuers without a lot of talent. You have to be good to start a new trend.

I liked "S.I.W." when I read it in high school. I was surprised to learn that Owen was an officer, and that he died on his second tour - for which he had volunteered - in the last month or so of the war.

Anyways, I will go with the poem that appears in my location and user bio: "The Second Coming", by William Yeats.

Well, I think it was long after Thayer wrote and published it; possibly after he died. But since poem speak to many people differently, some are going to change them to be more suitable.

Surely you've had assignments in English classes where you try to mimic a famous author's style? We did that for a lot of them... Hawthorne, Shakespeare, etc... and this is kinda the same thing. Somebody writes his interpretation of Casey; there's a book with a whole bunch of them somewhere.

I used to think O captain my captain by walt whitman was so cool until I found out it was about abraham lincoln, I thought it was much cooler when it was disambiguous.
