Polanski v. Bieber: Arena of Antipathy

Do you think more people in America dislike Roman Polanski or Justin Bieber?

Fixed that for ya!

I sincerely hope the President tells the Italians if they want her, they can try and come take her.
So we can add her to the list of CIA agents and managers who are now wanted for criminal activity in Italy? Kidnapping an innocent person they falsely claimed was a terrorist? And let's not forget GWB and many of his cronies for torturing and murdering other innocent people.

Isn't it interesting how the "law and order" crowd has a completely different perception of the situation when they are the ones supporting and defending criminal activities.

I'd say it is bang on that a law and order guy would be horrified that a so-called modern nation like Italy has something as barbaric as double jeopardy?

Mind you, I am equally horrified at the ways my own country gets around it by creating multiple charges to pin on people for the same offense.

Only they were initially found guilty that was overturned by an appeal. Then more evidence was apparently found that implicated them again.

As a "law and order" advocate, are you interested in justice and fairness? Or merely technicalities when they happen to be in your favor? Do you feel the same way when a known murderer is freed on a technicality?

What I find odd is that the one person on trial for murder apparently just got up and left the courtroom on his own volition, and the other wasn't there at all. They had to revoke his passport in hopes of catching him. Italy certainly seems to have a pretty weird criminal justice system.

I've read recently that Bieber was arrested for driving while drugged and under the influence of alcohol. Talk about youth gone wrong. Just allow them too much and that's the result. I think he is actually disliked not only in America but in the other parts of the world as well - even in the parts of the world where they never ever heard about Polanski and his movies. Besides Polanski is old times and Bieber is ripe and juicy topic to be torn apart by the international press ;)

Double jeopardy makes sense to me in cases when new evidence is uncovered that severely changes the potential case about whoever is/was charged with the crime.

Otherwise I'm with you.

Bieber's father may have actually been worse. He was coordinating the drag racing his son was participating in and was arrested along with him.

Polanski is one of the most famous movie directors of all time. Of course there are going to be people out there who don't know who he is, but I'd guess those people don't really know much about movies or movie history.

As for the pedophilia charges against him, from what I remember the girl he had sex with was not prepubescent - so it couldn't have been pedophilia. Right? Not that it makes it okay or anything - quite the opposite - I would not defend Polanski wrt this at all, but there is no need for hyperbole. Then again I could be wrong, maybe the girl was 9? I don't really want to google this stuff at work.

I don't hate either of them - for teh most part they just don't factor into my life.. at all.

Let's get a couple of things straight

1) she didnt have sex with him, he didnt have sex with her. He raped her.

2) prepubescent, pubescent, whatever. She's 14 and a child. Aka he raped a child

I just want to point out that she was 13, not 14. I think the 14 people keep bringing up is because they are reading one of the charges (rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14) and the 14 just sticks in their mind. Not like 14 would make it all honky dory, mind you.

Rape by use of drugs isn't hunky dory at 18, 30, 44, or 70+ either. Let's not give this guy a pass "because he made good movies" anymore than I think you guys would give those high schoolers a pass "because they throw good handegg ball."

I like polanskis movies but I've never even heard any of Justin Bieber's music. I doubt it's something I would like and it's not really geared towards me as a demographic.

What Justin Bieber did is not really any different from what numerous celebrities and ordinary people do all the time so I don't really care.

I found this game amusing.

Let's get a couple of things straight.

1) She have seduced him.

2) She is not a child.

I think most people consider 13 to still be a child. With 15 or 16 you might have some leeway but 13 no. Some people that age may look more adult and aren't pre puberty but they're still very young.

It is an amusing game.

Here's another couple of straight things:

1) She was 13;

2) He was 44.

Well, and...? You say like it is bad thing but those are just numbers. As soon as women become pubertal it is normal for them to try use their seductive abilities to get what they want. We should not judge her too harsh for trying to get a role using her feminive charm. It is what females did, do and will do. Men should be wary of their tricks but it is no surprise when one falls to them. This story is old as humanity itself.

:twitch:

Well in his defense, your position is about as defensible as "Hey lets go cook some babies." It's no surprise that's his reaction. What do you really say to someone that advocates the rape of 13 year old girls?
