I don't know but [OT] I remember the moment I fell in love with Deirdre. Was playing Morgan and someone told me to attack the Gaians because apparently Deirdre spends her days running naked through the forrests. I've spend the next game planting as many forrests as I could :D

So... any faction that gives me the same sense of... role playing ;)

Slavic Federation, because:

1) POLAND INTO SPACE!!!
2) MUH KOROLYOV! MUH GAGARIN! MUH LUNOKHOD!
3) SLAVA RUSI! SLUZHU SOVETSKOMU SOYUZU!
4) Kozlov is a goat. No, really! "Kozel" mean "goat" in Russian (and in other Slavic languages too).
5) Alpha Centauri je Srbia.
6) "Hej Slaveni, jošte živi duh naših dedova, dok za narod srce bije njihovih sinova."

Oh God, it's best day of my life! OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!

(MIASMA HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM PREMISES)

I wanted to be patriotic and first play an EU-like faction (I'm a German Serb/Croat btw), but since there isn't one, I can only narrow it down to Franco-Ibera or the Slavic Federation (which I prefer to think of as an expanded Yugoslavia rather than a new USSR). I'll make my final decision after I see the faction bonuses.

I said before, I'm a big "random" fan, but it seems to me for now that the choise of faction won't be as interesting as in previous civs. I feel like there won't be same desire to play different civs every time, but rather find most optimal faction for me cold number wise (I can't really see any kind of "kinship" or "relate to" to any faction) and stick with it. Hope I'm wrong.

I am kind of disappointed by this South American dictatorship warmonger thing. They could create something else, such as a super "granola" sponsor, or an Alien-obsessed organization for Brazil.

However, it seems that the concept is already done, and someone has to take the dictatorship burden. Looks like they decided it will be us, laid back South Americans: NOT China, NOT the Slavic countries, NOT Germanic Europe, NOT 'Murica. In that sense they are making a wise "political" move and saving their own skin so to speak, since it will not create too much tension to draw a portrayal like that for a peaceful country such as Brazil (or whatever this territory will be transformed into). Just think of a dictatorial Asian cooperative, any resemblance to the real world? On the other hand, Brazil had in fact its own deal of military authoritarian government, a dreadful episode in BR history. Beckmann Geisel and Medici times were hard.

With that said, I think I will choose Latin Europe (Franco-Iberia). Allez Élodie !

i'm not sure there is going to be an optimal faction, at least for afinities, it will depend on what resources you have or can get. It will be hard to fully exploit purity if you have not flowstone and hard to do supremacy if you have not sidmantiam, i mean firaxisite.
In the original i tried all the factions, I did like the Gians, although running naked through the forest was optional

Hopefully there won't be an optimal anything. That's what Firaxis usually intends, since otherwise it's a design failure. I hate it when games are reduced to "optimal choices", mechanical build orders, and beelining to X and then Y, and if you don't do it you're a chump because there's no freedom in the path to success.

It's the main reason I don't play Civ games at the highest difficulties. At that point, it stops being a game and more like a cold machine you have to operate the exact right way (or restricted set of ways) or lose.

You'd probably be correct if you intend to go with the same strategy every time, but that applies just as much to Civ V as BE. While going random might not be as radical a shift from the get-go as, say, going Germany vs going Shoshone, it should encourage you to change your play style to whichever civ you roll's strengths and weaknesses. If you roll the Protectorate, you're probably not going to be much of a war mongerer.

I can't decide if I want to roll Kavithan on an Arid planet to recreate the Fremen culture from Dune, or if I want to roll Pan-Asian for the sexy science bonus, and explore more of the tech tree.

Where even is the Kavithan Protectorate?

Everything suggests it's in India.

I somehow have the strange feeling it's basically the same thing as the Khanate of Chagatai. Owning Central Asia. I'm not Arguing with you you're certainly right I just had a picture in my head when I heard the name.

Too early to tell, but probably Polystralia (because the name sounds cool.)

That is exactly what I'm hoping for, but you're missing one detail in my point. In civ 5 in addition to different play styles that is encouraged, it is also interesting for me to try different interesting empires / cultures our rich history baked. With fiction factions I'm not sure they'll be interesting enough for me to care, besides the cold numbers. Of that I hope I'm wrong.

Bra Bra Bra Bra Brazil!
