Do you want dynamic names to appear on the scoreboard in the main screen by default?

everyone already said that names would be too long for that list.
Correction: not 'everyone'. Only some of the minority who voted 'no'. :)
Wrong again, I'm afraid. I voted yes even though I think some of the names are too long

In fact, I was correct. Although you think that some of the names are too long, you hadn't 'already said' it (quote), but are only saying it now. Therefore, even though you have voted 'yes', you were no exception to my claim when I made it. :)

is the vote decided on a majority or a 2/3 vote?
btw, I voted yes because the names are awesome.
and about the option... it should be reverse. The dynamic names should be default and the short names an option :D

Like USSR, SPQR, ROC which are/were in common use. If it's a republic it can be Rep. of x.

Of more concern (and likely THE stumbling block to this discussion) is localization. (CCCP or USSR?)

The status quo is: city names in native language, diplomacy in English (or localised language). So USSR in English... though the marginal cases include East Germany (DDR or GDR?).

Yes. I also agree with the backwards option, for those who don't want the names. I think they're too cool not to use. ;)

Since we do have a 2/3 majority I suggest to go at least for a compromise: keep the short description, but display the full names on the scoreboard whenever one mouses over it. If the full names only appear when mousing over, then the counter-arguments heard in this thread (dynamic names are overlong, confusing, etc.) become void.

I think that the Revolution mod, which has its own version of dynamic names, does adopt this solution.

(Right now, the only way to see dynamic names without opening the foreign advisor or the diplo screens is to hover over tiles that are within the fog of war, otherwise you only see the x% of culture).

sounds like a good idea

It's easy, just follow the instructions in the original thread.

Oops, I accidentally voted yes.

I agree with everyone saying to keep short names as default, and instead have an option for long names. It's not really noticeable on mouseover (IMO) so I don't think that would do anything at all.

Not 'noticeable'? Download the latest patch, mouse over the scoreboard, and actually look at what appears in the pop-up box. Unless you are being absent minded or distracted, you will certainly notice the long name.

Granted, it is not as prominent as when it is permanently displayed on the scoreboard (that's my default setting now) but the mouseover trick does do something: it makes the long name appear on the main screen whenever you want to see it.

It's more or less unnoticeable unless you know what you're looking for. I still think long names should be made standard, and some of the long names shortened to account for it.

Mousing over doesn't just display the long names, but also diplo attitutes/modifiers and the espionage points ratio. So, whenever you want to see those info on the main screen, you will see the long names as well, even if you weren't purposely looking for them. Also, an option like 'Contact Ramesses II of Egyptian Old Kingdom' quite stands out on top of the pop-up box.

Agreed, but the mouseover trick is still better than not having dynamic names at all on the main screen.
