Merve Buyuksarac, 27, was found guilty of insulting a public official for postings she made on social media. She denied insulting Mr Erdogan.

"Merve was prosecuted for sharing a posting that did not belong to her. My client has been convicted for words that do not belong to her."

Almost 2,000 people, including celebrities and schoolchildren, have been prosecuted in Turkey for insulting the president since he came to office in 2014, under a previously little-used law.

The president caused uproar last month when he filed a criminal complaint against a German satirist in a case that prompted a debate over freedom of speech in Germany.

the finest of the "Muslim" kids in the country were pushed to join the schools of the Gülen Movement , the Congregation you are seeing in these pages . Very strict regimentation , hard work , a lot of praying and some careful nurturing and they finish best possible schools , join various State institutions and take care of their kind , with bringing in more and more Congregation members . Turkey is patronage society and having read up on Greece I can figure out what that means for the government which translates to corruption and cronyism.
And I figured the two main factions for Turkey are Pro-West, Pro Islam and the Kurd's.

Just to get this out of the way; I work in the Australian civil service and have friends who work for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I have no direct link to these events, but I do know several people who do, including a few people fairly high in Australia's foreign service. As such, I won't be naming any sources for this, and since it's all second-hand at best even my sources aren't 100% sure it's all correct anyway. This is simply what DFAT in Oz has managed to figure out so far.

Many people have noticed a discrepancy in the numbers involved in this coup. If everyone Erdogan is arresting were involved in the coup, Erdogan would never have retained power to arrest them. That's not because this is a false flag operation. Rather, it's because we're dealing with two separate coups here. The one that failed, and the one that would have succeeded in six months or so, but now may never happen.

The reports DFAT has suggest that while the military proper has a contingency plan for a coup against Erdogan, or indeed against any Turkish government, this contingency plan has been temporarily derailed on several prior occasions, including this time last year, due to Erdogan successfully negotiating with and/or arresting generals before they could move on him. That hasn't stopped the plotting, and Erdogan has always even living on borrowed time.

This particular coup, however, was planned by a small faction within the Turkish military, loyal to the principles of Fethullah Gulen. The Gulen Movement represents something of a middle way between the two competing Turkish traditions of Islamism, as personified currently by Erdogan, and Kemalism, as personified by the hard-line secularist generals. As such it is not popular with either group, but it is relatively popular in Turkey, with roughly 10% of the population supporting it. The coup-plotters wanted to overthrow Erdogan and re-write the Turkish Constitution along Gulenist lines, with Gulen as President.

This is very important to note: the coup-plotters always counted on naming Gulen himself as President. But they did not establish any contact with Gulen himself, they were not receiving orders from him, and there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to indicate that he knew anything about this coup before it happened. Contrary to Erdogan's self-serving lies, GULEN WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE COUP. Neither were the Gulenists in the judiciary, universities, schools, police force, or parliament. There appears to have been a leader of the coup, an Admiral, who has vanished without a trace. Being onboard a ship during the coup, he wasn't capable of giving the address himself, and was never considered to be a long-term leader anyway; that was supposed to be Gulen's job.

The timing of the coup is important. It was a well-known fact in the Turkish military that Erdogan was planning to purge the army later this year. The lists were already drawn up, which is helping Erdogan now. The military was to be purged of Gulenists, Kemalists, and any other oppositional figures. This was to be the likely time for a Kemalists coup.

The Gulenists had therefore planned to launch their coup this month, pre-emptying the Kemalists coup and establishing the Gulen Movement in power. Their planning was very amateurish, relying a lot on wishful thinking and an overestimation of their own support and resources. But they didn't even get to carry out their original plan, as news of the coup leaked to the AKP 48 hours before the coup we all witnessed.

So far, the source of this leak is unknown, but DFAT believes it to have been picked up through state surveillance on known Gulenists. The network was very heavily infiltrated, which is why we're seeing such huge numbers being arrested right now. The Kemalists are less infiltrated.

With their plans leaked, the conspirators decided to go early, having nothing else to lose. They commandeered forces who knew nothing of their plans, telling them they were on a training exercise or acting to prevent a coup.

The nucleus of the plotters appear to have been in the navy, which organised the attempted capture of Erdogan themselves. Erdogan was tipped off and fled. The rumours that he was seeking asylum outside of Turkey were true; he initially was unable to get the support of Kemalists generals, and expected to lose power. He was seeking potential refuges elsewhere, including in Britain, Germany, and even Russia. Then the situation began to shift in his favour. The AKP Prime Minister was far more successful in winning support than Erdogan himself, and managed to secure the backing of several important figures in the Air Force. Thus began the systematic attacks on the conspirators from the air, which, with the very limited aerial resources - less than two dozens jets and a few helicopters - at their disposal, the rebels were unable to defend against. The majority of unwilling conscripts deserted the rebel cause, and the coup failed miserably.

Incidentally, there are at least a dozen Turkish ships still unaccounted for. The navy was the nucleus of the plotters, and they don't seem interested in being arrested. It may be months before they are all accounted for. There are also reports of several army units disappearing across the border into Iraq or into the Turkish countryside. Some of the Air Force also seems to have deserted. No one knows what will become of these forces, who may well seek refuge in a state opposed to Erdogan. I suspect Putin would be very interested in making a deal with them.

With the coup defeated, Erdogan has used it as an opportunity to purge not just the military, but every other organisation of Gulenists, real and imagined. Despite the numbers, he is not going after the Kemalists yet; he needs them, and the situation is too fragile to risk angering them and forcing them to launch their own coup. For now, the Kemalists and the AKP have a common enemy; the hated Gulenists. But Erdogan is making covert moves against them; he's arresting a few Kemalists with Gulenist links, pushing the boundaries as much as he dares, establishing a precedence for mass arrests by his security apparatus. He's clearly planning for a future coup, not just for dealing with the current one.

Just to get this out of the way; I work in the Australian civil service and have friends who work for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I have no direct link to these events, but I do know several people who do, including a few people fairly high in Australia's foreign service. As such, I won't be naming any sources for this, and since it's all second-hand at best even my sources aren't 100% sure it's all correct anyway. This is simply what DFAT in Oz has managed to figure out so far.

The one that failed, and the one that would have succeeded in six months or so, but now may never happen.

The reports DFAT has suggest that while the military proper has a contingency plan for a coup against Erdogan, or indeed against any Turkish government, this contingency plan has been temporarily derailed on several prior occasions, including this time last year, due to Erdogan successfully negotiating with and/or arresting generals before they could move on him. this makes a lot of sense and coincide with all reports on the media, and my gut feelings on the topic. But the idea that gülen had no prior information is suprising for me.
