??? Ojevind Lang, I'm not sure why you quoted TheWilltoAct. We weren't talking about how the units are overpowered or gamebreaking. We were discussing how to judge UUs relative to the units they replace and each other.

I apologize. I thought we were basically on the same side, enjoying the fact that there are UU's with varying strengths and weaknesses. That's why I included the quote, which I probaby shouldn't have done.

For my part I was actually agreeing that the Praet was op based off of my own interpretation of blitz's conclusion (below)

In this case, the Praetorian provides a massive increase in survivability and combat %.

My thinking was that if the Praetorian's hard counter (axe) is effectively removed, by which I mean that your odds of beating them in the open field is 50% or greater, perhaps they are a touch too strong.

But I guess I don't think they are gamebreaking... just overpowered.

Maybe have STR 6 Preats withh Combat I & II, 1 first strike. Early access to many promos, 7.2 base str, but not much else.

Sounds decent, but I prefer the Legionnaire unit mod with 7 str, first strike, and ability to make forts and roads. Forgot who made it, sorry

I don't think the praetorian is overpowered (or any UU, for that matter). They are great in certain situations but not useful at all in others. The Roman leaders' traits are exactly super either.

Its a top UU, nothing else, now when you have unrestricted leaders on and choose Ragar of Rome, Make those preats AGG,now thats overpowered....:D

I voted no big deal, probably the only dude here, sorry - but i was super psyched to conquer the world as Rome, but in my current game...Ive had my roman Preatorians one on one against axeman numerous times, (even a random barbarian), and they have lost every time in this CURRENT game.

Either that or I have really rotten luck with the %thing...lol...great fun watching your army of preatorians get slaughtered against a city - who was it, ah yes, Brennus, who hadnt even gotten his UU yet, so he only had Axemen...but even his UU, on flat land i was getting the rotten end of the stick. Preatorian vs Celt UU(name??), 8 str vs 6 str(with hill bonus) - so obviously no hill attacks.

Meh, I know this was probably a once off thing, but im not exxagerating, My 8 Preatorian Rush stack, was, defeated by a couple of axemen...anyhow...I just waited till i got macemen then used them instead...

Gamebreaking. Playing as Rome is an exploit due to this one unit. Unless you make some miserable mistake, you can't really go wrong with them. And they last for such a long time, especially if you get Iron Working, and a resource hooked up, early.
But is it not one of the reasons why the Roman Empire was so big for so long, because of it's Legions ?

i'd prefer if they were str7+combatI

yeah, or 7 STR with an inherent (not promotion-related) bonus vs cities. The arguments of a couple other UUs also being abusable in the wrong situations doesn't excuse the Praetorian.

They didn't control Scotland. They realised sharpish a big wall was better.

A number of contemporary-ish civs were as big or much bigger than the Roman empire, and don't get a big bonus to their UUs.

A game like Civ has to have some "historical" connection albeit one which may affect the balance.

e.g. Today the American UU should be the "Super Carrier" and not the "Navy Seals"

Sure, but that's no reason to include a gamebreaking element. You can't make the Roman Empire more powerful than, say, the Incan Empire, just because you might think they were historically more powerful. For purposes of gameplay, all have to be balanced.
