Pre-release demo confirmed?

D just so we have the same definition on review, I mean when they score the game from 1-10 or 5 stars, with a write up etc. First hands on is usually just a preview, with a playable version of the game, or part of the game. That's how I understand it atleast :).

Civ 5 is steamworks based. It's improbable to impossible for them to make a non-steam using demo. My guess is that the demo will be announced sometime in september and released via steam.

Why would they wait so long to put out a demo? It seems a little bit dissapointing

Steam != Steamworks

Two seperate things.

As much as I'd like to think they'd leave Steam out of a demo to hook people before they know Steam is involved, it would make the sense to do the demo thru Steam.

Doing the demo via Steam lets them be lazy and gets Steam installed on machines ahead of time, so people can sort out any tech issues they might have and get over the misery of having dookieware on their PCs (for the antis like me).

I know the difference, and I specifically meant via steam, via its store interface. As in, it'll appear in steam under the civ 5 page.

I have no doubt at all that it will be a free Steam D/L, no key required but you will need Steam installed. Good way to get us all using Steam before the 21th Sept :-/

Sure not all.

Well everyone that wants to test Civ out before buying it, I'm sure that there will quit the load on the Steam D/L servers the day the demo is released.....

Many of you have written on the forums and emailed in questions about whether or not there will be a public demo for Civilization V.

Well, today I am excited to get to tell you that yes, there will be!

The demo will be released in September, before the full game is released. More details about what will be available in the demo, as well as the exact release date are coming soon, so stay tuned!

This is good news, they wouldn't give us a demo before the release date unless they were really confident they have a big hit on their hands.

I can indeed confirm that there will be a demo available before September 21 :)

Oh My God i cant wait for the demo! ive been itching for one before i preorder the game.

Clearly they want the demo to be identical to the final product, so they cannot make the demo until the game goes 'gold' and DVD's are pressed. At this time they're doing post production on the game and optimizing it technically to make it run as fast and efficiently as possible on a variety of hardware. This is also why they haven't released the minimal / recommended specs yet.

Given that for previous Civ games the demo came out after the release of the game, I'd say that a demo before the release is something to rejoice over.

Yes, I want the machine specs to be the same as the full game. Then I'll be able to see if it runs on my laptop.

There's also GamesCom in slightly more than 2 weeks. 250,000 visitors, lots and lots of press coverage. You don't want to preempt that by releasing the demo before that.
