I think this maybe a discussion on the best/preferred way to share large files from one computer to another over the internet. Ones that are too big for email.

These are the ones I know of so far --

-- BitTorrent/p2p
-- File-uploading websites
-- Upload to a webserver (I sometimes do this)
-- Sneakernet!

What do you preferd way? Whats most efficent? Talk about this :crazyeye:

How large is "large"? If it's < 2GB, Dropbox is probably about the easiest option for most people.

Depends on who, what it is and how soon it has to be there.

If I need to get it to several people, Ill get it hosted somewhere. If its to one person, then Ill fire up the ftp server and give them a link. If its really big > 10GB then physical media is the best bet, although this has only had to happen twice.

This pretty much sums it up. You can't beat FTP in getting reasonably large files to where they need to be.

If I control both computers, or it's otherwise an option, I prefer scp. Next, there's FTP, but as FTP sends everything, including username and password, in the clear, there are obvious security issues. (There are various forms of secure FTP, but as there is not one standard protocol and support is patchy in various FTP clients and servers, it tends to be a pain to actually use.)

Lately, for files I want to make available to people, I use the web-based "File Station" utility on my Synology NAS with an appropriate guest user.
