With the PS3 and Wii coming out in a few short months, and the 360 already out. It's about time we have this discussion. Almost everything about the consoles are already known, so come on.. tell us which one(s) your going to be buying and why.

I'll be getting an XBox 360 for the games (Madden, FIFA, GTA, Halo) and the price.

All of them.

I'll be sticking with the eternal PC. Can't go wrong with that. Well, actually you can go wrong, as PCs always require upgrading, and have many more problems than the other systems. But such is life.

PS3 without a doubt for two reasons:

1. I have a large library of PS2 games that I'll still be able to play.

2. Lately I'm into the Japanese video game scene and since PS3 is going to be region free I can continue to add to my import collection! :D

Nope!

Dang. I was hoping this thread would have all sorts of handy pointers for me...

OK, if I give you some background, can you give me some advice ?
  • Currently, we have a PS2 (used a lot), a GameCube (not used much) & 2 PCs (used a lot for games as well as web, homework etc).
  • The PCs tend to be used for tactical / strategy games (like Civ, Total War, RoN, & Sims2), but not for sports games and shoot-em ups.
  • The PS2 gets a lot of work on Timesplitters, Pro Evolution Soccer 5, and the various Star Wars games (such as the wonderful Jedi Starfighter one).
  • The PS2 is on its last legs (problems loading / unloading / reading disks).
  • The PS3 is now not out in the UK until Spring 2007.
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is rumoured to have better AI on the Xbox360 than on the PS2.

So, do I:

(a) just hold on until the PS3 is ready, cos Sony have always come through for me in the past ?

(b) buy the Wii as a pre-Xmas stop-gap, cos I admire Nintendo's funky off the wall games (I was the biggest Pokeman fan in his late thirties in the UK, y'know), and buy the PS3 later ?

(c) go with the XBox360 cos it's there now, I don't need Blu-Ray, and the PES6 needs to be played at its highest difficulty level as soon as possible ? And consider the Wii and the PS3 once they're out and have some reasonable games around ?

(d) Or do I just buy 'em all, because I actually have a ridiculously large amount of disposable income ?

I'm tending towards (c) at the moment. (d) is an option, but my ridiculously large income comes with the price of having a ridiculously small amount of free time to apply to console games :(

Views appreciated.

but not for sports games and shoot-em ups.

Not for shoot-em ups? Are you on crack? FPS spawned on the PC, anytime anywhere will a PC user pwnarize a console man in a FPS.

Personally, I'm most interested in Nintendo's upcoming system (although I think the name "Wii" was a very poor decision). I was looking forward to the PS3, but the price is considerably higher than I was expecting, and it's going to be absolutely impossible to find for the next six months (not to mention a less-than-stellar launch lineup of games...) Maybe in a year or so when the price drops and there are some titles I want to play. But getting back to the Wii, gaming as an industry has been becoming more and more stagnant of late, and the innovative controller is the first genuinely new thing I can think of in recent memory. Plus, ever since I first played the Legend of Zelda in 1987, I've always wanted to be able to swing Link's sword and have that be reflected on the screen. How cool is that?

With that said, what each person should do is look at what games are going to be available for each console, and make a decision based on what seems to be the most interesting. There's more than enough room for everyone to pick what they like and be happy without falling into fanboyish hatred of the opposing companies. :) (I've never understood why owning one system causes so many people out there to detest the others - it's a logical fallacity to think that your owning an X-Box somehow detracts from my owning a PS2!)

Allof those are on PS3 except Halo, which is highly over rated IMO.

And Sony annouced mod support for some of the ps3 games already. Plus it has Linux, there goes my pc.

I already have an Xbox 360, and I might get a Wii for Christmas (probably one of the few in England to want one), and maybe upgrading my PC. I don't think I'll ever get a PS3 (even though everyone will get one).

Already have a 360. I am turned from Sony to Microsoft. The price of PS3 (HALF A GRAND!) put me off. Wii is just stupid. Games are chilling out things. I don't want to break a sweat playing games! Plus, many 360 exclusives heading my way! (Mass Effect, Bioshock, WWE Smackdown 2007)

I find it funny that "breaking a sweat" is one of the big misconceptions with Nintendos next system. The remote responds to large grandiose movements just as well as subtle motions.

I'm pre-ordering one for launch day!

You may well be right (not about the crack comment, however, that was just dumb), but my main interest is in co-operative multi-player FPS games. So Timesplitters fits the bill precisely. Are there PC games which fit this niche as well ? To be honest, even if there are, I only have 2 PCs, and I like to play Timesplitters with both my sons at the same time.

PS Presuming there is such a word as "pwnarize", what do you think it means ?
