Puzzles,conundrums, riddles and thoughts?

A point

Can be read but not words

can be seen but not visible

Can be thrown but not caught, might hurt a bit?

Question? Riddle,nah that's words.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Explanation:

The key, again, was to think logically about the problem as a whole. The riddle was a conjunction of three properties, each of which was fairly weird (how can something be seen but not be visible!?). After three pages of guessing, it should have become evident that perhaps it's the case that nothing has all of those properties (especially considering that the second was pretty much contradictory). So the answer is, nothing! Not the concept of "nothingness" (whatever that may be!), but simply nothing. That is, it's not the case that there exists an x such that x can be read but isn't words, x can be seen but isn't visible, and x can be thrown but not caught.

This is a very good riddle to pull off on the internets, because you can always come up with totally new properties, so googling does nothing. The key is that at least one of the properties has to be essentially contradictory.

You're up, Truronian!

That was a pretty gay riddle

if it was gay then why did it PWN YOU GUYS FOR THREE PAGES!?!??!?

You're just mad because you style yourself as a logical-type and that answer never occured to you :smug:

Anyways, have fun with the rest of the thread everybody, I'm all riddled out!

A major problem with that riddle was that it wasn't solveable until it was explicitly stated that the words all had their most mundane possible meanings. Without that information, 'nothing' is simply a guess and can't be shown to be the answer.

Fair enough, but I figured that if its fair game in riddles not to explicitely state that the meaning is very figurative and whatnot, then why should I have to explicitely state that its mundane!? Besides, I had given the "stop thinking so figuratively" hint very early on.

Anyways, I'd rather halt this debate before it turns into a dogpile of frusterated Im-so-smart-and-if-I-cant-get-the-answer-to-a-freaking-riddle-game-it-will-hurt-my-ego-so-i-will-debate-and-debate-every-aspect-of-the-riddle-ad-nauseum-in-a-vain-attempt-to-restore-my-own-belief-in-my-own-cleverness-people (not you, Tal, but there are others just waiting in the wings I'm sure).

Ya'll are just mad because I R TEH RIDDLEMASTER

The point is, without that info, there's nothing in the riddle that would lead the solver to draw an intelligible line to 'nothing' as the answer. You might as well have asked, "What resembles an elephant but has wings, eats goldfish but has antlers, and looks only slightly like Joan Rivers?" and then expected 'nothing, you idiot' as the proper answer.

I don't see how no intelligble line can be drawn? You think, "hmm, it doesn't really seem like anything HAS those properties, maybe nothing does!!!". The problem is that people were too much in the "riddle" frame of mind.

Anywho, if you want a more riddly answer I just pmed you one. :smug:

EDIT: Another possible thing that would draw somebody to the "nothing" answer is that ya'll should know that I get my kicks off being an obnoxious jerk, so it wouldn't be unreasonable for me to make up some bizarre riddle with no answer and watch you all struggle!

I disagree with the others, I think it was excellent, if only I'd of taken it further when I said there was no answer to it, I think that was correct but? Whatever.

Also I think a point fitted all three, but that's just semantics I suppose...

Truronian is up and now I can stop thinking about this riddle at least. :)

Ok...

How to you rearrange the letters in "NEW DOOR" to make one word?

Ok...

How to you rearrange the letters in "NEW DOOR" to make one word?

Hmmm

Newdoor
Newdoro
Wdenroo
Woodren
Renwood...

Lot's of solutions!!

Wait... Do you mean one word that actually mean something?

Then it's Nerwood, where Robin Hood lived.

One Word. :)

Rats too slow :gripe:

hehe that's a clever one Tru ;)
)

The riddle however was asking how.. so here we go ;)

0. start with: NEW DOOR
1. move first O to the front: ONEW DOR
2. move D to the back: ONEW ORD
3. move space to the left: ONE WORD

edit: but i don't have any riddles so i pass

:) OK sure

This ones a tricky one, but if you think carefully it's possible to assert with 100% certainty an answer.

Q: How can the prisoners tell, with certainty, that all 100 of them have visited the central living room with the light bulb.

100 prisoners are in solitary cells, unable to see, speak or communicate in any way from those solitary cells with each other. There's a central living room with one light bulb; the bulb is initially off. No prisoner can see the light bulb from his own cell. Everyday, the warden picks a prisoner at random, and that prisoner goes to the central living room. While there, the prisoner can toggle the bulb if he or she wishes. Also, the prisoner has the option of asserting the claim that all 100 prisoners have been to the living room. If this assertion is false (that is, some prisoners still haven't been to the living room), all 100 prisoners will be shot for their stupidity. However, if it is indeed true, all prisoners are set free. Thus, the assertion should only be made if the prisoner is 100% certain of its validity.

Before the random picking begins, the prisoners are allowed to get together to discuss a plan. So ---- what plan should they agree on, so that eventually, someone will make a correct assertion?

No googling either :)
