Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

If I have units in a neutral city and they are attacked, do my troops get the city defense bonus?

I'm thinking of two things:
- City defense bonus (probably not)
- Promotion bonus (the one that gives extra defense for units in a city)

What the hell? Is this normal??

Sorry should of specified: Annoyed at the moment of contact, regardless of the fact that I have NO religion and no visible modifier (You have traded with our worst enemy, Our close borders make us sad/angry/rabblerabblerabblehnnng).

There are hidden modifiers, many of the warmongers will start at Annoyed. On the other hand a couple of AIs, Zara and Gandhi IIRC (and likely more) will actually start at Pleased.

Just got the Civ 4 complete edition.

What's the definitive version of Civ 4?

Also is Colonization worth playing over the original? I don't mind retro games btw.

3.19 once downloading the latest patch from Civ4 menu.

Never played Colonization, so I dunno.

The 3.19 that Manco Capac refers to is for Beyond the Sword, which most players consider the "definitive" version. The last patch for the basic game is 1.74. The last patch for Warlords is 2.08 ( although I may have that one wrong since I don't play it).

Colonization is not CIV. It is an entirely different game, based on the CIV themes.

Yep, common wisdom for newcomers is to try out one or two games in Vanilla to get a feel for it and then jump over to Beyond the Sword for good. You can skip Warlords without a problem, though it has some nice scenarios I suppose.

Second what others said about BtS 3.19, but I would also consider the BUG mod to be important enough to be considered "definitive"- for me anyway. It doesn't change gameplay at all, it just organizes and presents information better than the OOTB game. Makes the game more streamlined and easier to play.

Regarding Civ4Col, it’s very similar to the original Colonization. There’s some new units/buildings/leaders/etc., but aside from graphics that are 20 years newer, it’s almost the same game.

Yup. Some example of what the BUG mod provides:

If you want to see your military power in comparison with other civs you would normally have to open the Demographics screen, while with BUG you see it directly on the scoreboard next to other leaders. You can easily visualize where you want to found cities, see when the next Great Person is going to be born and what type it is probably going to be, get notifications when cities are growing, and much more! All while not changing the basic game at all, only providing information that would have been available anyway but with a lot more clicks, guesses and calculations on your part involved.

I recently started playing Civ, I played a hotseat game with a friend and noticed that under my "health" total under city viewer that I had "-2 from features"

What is that -2 from and how do I avoid it in the future as it kept my population from growing and severely limited my progress

There are three terrain features that give unhealth to cities that have them in their BFC, and you have at least two of them in this case (otherwise it would say e.g. -2 from Jungle). To be exact they are Jungle, Floodplains and Fallout. The first one you should mercilessly cut down, the last one can be removed by Workers after Ecology has been discovered, and the third one you'll just have to live with.

Ah okay, did not know that. Thanks very much! I just noticed the blue circle for recommended spot for settler and built, hovering icon doesn't show that it's -health.

Is there any "newbie" type post that would tell me the basic stuff like that I should know that the interface does not provide?

Well, there is this thread here.

Also you might want to check out the war academy.

Yeah, I've read some of the pages, I just didn't want to have to read a majority of the thread. Was curious if there was a smaller condensed 1-5 post covering it. Thanks for the advice on war academy! will head over to check it out

Would someone please explain to me the "You have traded with our worst enemies!" malus?

I was under the impression that in the case of even trades this does not apply.

You get that malus for any trade with an AI's worst enemy, including open boarders agreements.
