Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Since colonies are vassal states, no vassal states also means no colonies.

Sure, after verifying Alf+F1 I realized that 'no vassal states' is the cause, but busy with my wars in game:) I forgot to write the reason.Thank you to all.

Need a quick rundown. Why should one do a Horse Archer rush? What would make one pick said approach over a Chariot rush, Axeman rush, or more standard approaches like Catapults?

Some context: thinking of moving up to Prince, feeling in a warring mood, Kublai sounds like an interesting pick, reading up on Horse Archer rushes, and then being discouraged by all the caveats and disadvantages. Looking for the less obvious answers, i.e. not stuff like if I don't have horses, obviously can't do it.

HA rush is great because it's so swift. I do not know how well chariot rushes work on Prince, but assuming you are facing archers you are just going to lose a ton of chariots. I do not know what are the caveats and disadvantages of a HA rush btw. :)

That's a good consideration, HAs can stand up to Archers even with some defensive bonuses. And HAs are very swift, Keshiks even more so.

There are a lot of pitfalls to HA rusing. The most obvious one is that HBR is an expensive tech that deviates from useful techs like Alphabet and Currency. If the rush fails, you are in a very, very, very bad position.

HAs are for those who want to take their game further ;)
They require some desire of urgency and quickly sorting things between you and AIs.

It's by far the most useful rush for getting better, you can practise..
* settling only needed cities early that will contribute towards your rush
* war tactics like metal pillaging, fork attacks, luring units out of cities, and overall just being brave without using siege
* learning to accept losses in favor of quick city capturing progress
* economy recovery, combined with worker management and fully understanding upkeep costs

HAs work well up to deity, while chariot or Axe rushes are often not an option here (Axes sometimes are, but i am usually alone with that :)).
If you wait for cats, AIs can have longbows already at that level.
But if you get good with HAs, you can go a very long way difficulty wise.

I asked first time about a strange situation in my last map played, big amount of gold disappearing interturn in forum'Civ 4-BTS Unaltered Gameplay(BUG,Bat and BULL):https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/frequently-asked-questions-faq.307096/page-11' thinking that one option was turned 'on' wrong by me in BUG Mod settings (for automated production example),having Universal Suffrage maybe automated hurried production for some cities, but the answer was espionage missions.I neglected always 9-10 years these type of missions,'AI do not waste spies for gold, they want just to make damage and to steal techs':)).
5 saves were attached in that forum, too posted here.
My question is:AI can steal this big amount, aprox 1000 gold/turn,just 3 AI,me with more espionage points and having visibility in some cities of AI,including one capital?
Thanks in advance for help!

I looked at the 'just 741 gold' save using standard BtS and hit End-Of-Turn several times. Each turn, 1000s of gold failed to be added to the bank. My suggestion was EP stealing gold. Someone else gave a 'spike in inflation' suggestion that I am planning on looking at.

Anyone got any idea of what is going on?

Edit: I had another look at that save and noticed that each city had 'automated production'. I turned all of those off, swapped out of Universal Suffrage ... and ended turn. The gold stopped disappearing.

So ... the city governor was rushing desperately needed buildings. I've always hated governors.

I don't think the Ai ever steals gold, from what i've seen. Steal techs, sabotage buildings/interrupt production, and destroy tile improvements. Sometimes poison water, depending on the AI. But never steal gold.

Yeah, and governors will rush stuff in US if the Production Automation build order button (not the hammer button) is on during the inter-turn, it's something you have to mindful of if wanting to rush factories or airports or something later on, since they will just start randomly completing stuff and burning the gold bank.

I’ve also seen the AI incite revolts, but not follow up with an attack.

Hello everybody, I've been playing Monarch difficulty lately, and something that seems out of the ordinary happened during a game. I'm Catherine of Russia invading the Incans with swords and axes, it's 415BC and Huayna Capac already possesses Longbowmen in his Capital city! Is it some sort of glitch or should I expect this kind of crazy-fast teching at Monarch? Thank you in advance.

Did HC build Oracle? It's not out of the question that an AI would Oracle Feud on Monarch, and otherwise HC is one of the faster techers. Anyway, at 415BC you would probably want to have catapults in any fight, not just melee units.

Hi guys,

I'm a long time player and frequent visitor here, but I just joined to ask for help regarding custom map installation. I have searched and could not find a solution, and I cant figure it out.

So, I have Civ 4: Beyond the Sword via steam (if that matters). I wanted to play an epic, massive earth type map so I downloaded 'Gigantic accurate earth map' https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/gigantic-accurate-earth-map-232-x-112.478799/ and 'Earth 360x180' https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/earth-360x180-gigantic-map.25168/ . I followed the installation instructions, putting the files in the destination drive as suggested at D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\PublicMaps. I loaded the game, but none of the new maps appeared. I had only put beyond the sword files in, as i have beyond the sword, but then I tried putting them all in. Nothing. Then I put them all in all the relevant folders, Civ 4, Warlords, world builder. Still nothing. Then I notice that all the other maps in the folder are .py format, not .CivBeyondSwordWBSave, so I reset the file type to .py . Now when I load the game the maps are selectable, but they either crash or display a completely featureless grassland as opposed to a map of earth. I'm obviously going wrong here, but I cant find the solution.

Can anyone help? Thanks for your time!

Did you try loading it as a scenario?

^^^ this..they are scenario files (WBsaves). You need to revert them back, if that will work, or copy the WB files back in. Use "Play as Scenario" or "Custom Scenario" to play.

I think I did try that, but I'll make the changes and see if that resolves it. Awesome, thanks for your help guys!

Where in the BtS folders are the autosave files located?
