Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

So does this mean that Horses travel faster along a railroad than foot units? Strange...
Hey, I said that a while ago. Are you reading through the whole thread? I do not think that is the idea, but whatever floats you boat...

Yes, mounties, settlers and tanks move 20 spaces on RR and foot troops move 10. Their extra mobility helps them catch the right trains and avoid delays.

Choppers move 40 spaces on RR.
I belive in warlords at least this is not correct. As states in the civilopedia all units move 10 spaces / turn on railroad. I have not worked out exactly what happens when they get off railroad onto raods in the middle of their turn though though.

Oh. Maybe someone with a game at the point of having RR could test this out? I just remember when they changed it so choppers didn't only move 4 paces on a railroad.

You can't be serious.
I was when I wrote it, before I realized that 252 pages * 20 posts = more than anyone is going to read in a sesion. I did say that a long time ago though didn't I? Did you get a thread update email late or something?

Just post your questions here without worrying about if it's already covered somewhere else, and hopefully some of the experts will answer them.

Do railroads affect Gunships? Seems kind of funny to put a helicopter on a plane.

They didn't used to, which sucked, but they do now. How do you think combat helicopters get to the war zone?

The Chitzen Itza and the Hagia Sophia (another beautiful structure) are also useless.
I don't quite agree with Hagia Sophia being useless, although it is certainly not great. The Great Engineer points are nice if you have the luxury of Marble and the time to build it, though.

As for Chichen Itza - I'd actually forgotten about it when making my previous post. But I agree... for me, this is hands down the #1 worst wonder in the game. ;)

is there anyway to load to the starting game?

I have a saved game in AD1600 of elizabeth
i always kept on coming back to this and re-PLAYing it

but, i forgot about it, and started a new game with qin shi huang
and now, everytime i go to "autosave" the only starting save point there is for QIN, and none for elizabeth. even if I play a few turns on elizabeth

on spreading religion, and building the religion specific buildings:

i should first spread the religion I founded to all my cities before building those NATIVITY-christian, KONG-MIAO-conf/buddh right?

what if my religion spread to a neighbor? will he get the +1 commerce?

Have downloaded and seen replays of basic things happening but are there replays of the actual games. e.g. can see the map and what they are building - farms, etc?

I just did a quick test win Worldbuilder - for some reason units with 1 or 2 movement points both get 10 tiles movement on railroads and gunships (4 movement) get 12...

Unfortunately the Autosave folder is emptied when you start a new game, so there is no way to recover that one

This is not correct: when building the religion specific wonder in the holy city it is absolutely not necessary to have spread it to all your cities before that. You get 1 gold (not commerce) for every city in the world with that religion. this value is calculated every turn so that cities that acquire that religion later add to your gold income. The income is only in the holy city, so other civilizations do not get it - it is even beneficial to spread your religion widely...

There is no turn by turn replay

Unfortunately, I think you'll have to use your own manual saves. As far as I know, the autosaves from a previous game are wiped when you start getting the autosaves from a new one.

You don't need to spread the religion around all your cities before building the religious Shrine building, but it is wise to do so since you will get more income for doing this. (You will also get the benefits of the religious civics in more cities.)

The Shrine will also automatically increase the chance of the spreading of that religion to cities. (I am still not sure of the exact amount, but it seems from experience to be at least twice as high a chance.)

Only the person with the holy city benefits from the Shrine, so you will get the gold from your neighbour's cities of your religion. (Keep in mind that they'll get the bonuses of the religious civics in those cities though.) Likewise, your neighbour will get the gold from your cities of their religion.

I don't think so, although this would be an interesting feature. What you can do, however, is to create a 'teams game' in which you are on the same team as another AI (this needs to be set up at the beginning of the game, inside "Custom Game" in the "Single Player" menu). This will allow you to watch what your AI teammate does as he builds, researches, moves troops, etc throughout the game. Not quite the same thing, I know, but I thought it might be of interest to you. :)

The autosaves are not a replacement for the manual saves. They are there so that when the computer malfunctions or when you forget to save the game or do something stupid, you will always have an autosave from a few turns ago. But when you start a new game, the game thinks the autosaves of the old game are not needed anymore and the autosave folder is emptied.

You can change the number of turns inbetween the autosaves and the number of autosaves that need to be kept in the civilizationIV.ini file. The standard is saving once every 4 turns and keeping 4 autosaves before deleting the oldest one.

You don't have to do these things in a specific order. Whenever you get a Great Prophet, I should advice you to create the shrine of the religion. It's not sure that you'll get another Great Prophet. Especially not if don't exactly know how the Great Persons are created.

A holy city with a shrine will produce 1 gold for every city with the same religion of the holy city. All of that gold is subject to modifiers by buildings. So if you have a marketplace, grocer, bank and the Wallstreet small wonder in that city, then it will actually be 3 gold per city with the same religion.

It is interesting to spread the religion of your holy city for the money and because it gives you line of sight in the foreign cities in which the religion is spread. If a foreign nation has enough cities with your religion, then it will probably switch to your religion (or you can ask them through diplomacy). Then you will get the diplomacy modifier of brothers of the same faith.

10 moves for every unit. It has always been that way (except for gunships)

I don't know what you mean. Could you send us a link to the page where you can see these 'replays'?

Welcome to civfanatics, by the way! [party]

How do you determine what tech would be lightbulbed by a Great Person of a given type? Is there a list somewhere?

Yes there is a list.
Note : this is for vanilla!

Another one, with warlords 2.08 update

How to read it?
you need the prereqs of a tech to be able to lightbulb it.
Or sometimes you need to avoid the prereqs of a tech to lightbulb another ;)

I read somewhere around here that you can use the sliders to make one city focus on research and another city focus on gold. But the slider I see only affects all my cities. am I missing something?

There are some who want it that way ;) But the sliders affect all cities the same...
