Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

How do i monitor enemy units' numbers? I remember in civ3 you could, upon completing some spying mission, have a permanent account of how many units of which type enemy has in its inventory. In civ4 i can't seem to achieve anything similar. I can send a spy to uncover everything enemy has for a turn or two, but not permanently.

you can "buy" the military plan with a spy, but it's not permanent. It's up to date when you get it, that's all.

A simple way is to use F9 (which gives all kinds of statistics) and then consult the "power graph". This is very important, the higher in lvl you go, it gives you an idea of other nations military power. But pls note, it can be also very misleading as it doesn't discriminate between offensive, defensive and city improvements. I.E, It may rate another nation higher just because it has built a lot of city walls, and it has just discovered feudalism, and upgraded some archers to longbows.

Hardly a threat, but that nation will (often then) mistakenly feel itself to be more powerful than you. A shock may be on the way ( to that nation) if it decides to declare war upon you.....

Nothing that complicated. As I understand it, a leader will stick to his favorite civic even after more advanced civics become available, so a leader whose favorite civic is theocracy is unlikely to ever advance to free religion or stick with organized religion. I believe there is also a small diplomatic boost given to civs that employ a leader's favorite civic (if Izzy's a Theocracy lover, she'll like you more if you're using Theocracy) beyond the standard "you have chosen your civics wisely" bonus from having 3 in common.

To add to Roland's comments...

5) Perhaps you have coal nearby, but you had previous built another improvement on that tile (like farm or cottage).

I finished that game last night. I killed off all civs on my continent - with about 10 turns to go. I turned on the resource flag and zoomed out and checked all of them. There was NO coal anywhere on my continent. I reviewed the other major one & could see it there.

But NONE on my continent. In fact one of the other civs started trading it to me with about 4 turns left in the game.

So, I researched steam power & RRs, but never had any use for that...

Anyone else ever seen that??

In Civ3, not Civ4.

thx

(so far im in my first game in normal speed and playing as ghengis khan. 2nd to easiest difficulty, at year 1914, war wth all nations just for fun.. started getting infantry unit at around 1900 or 1890, automated all workers, 1 for each city, 1 or 2 for roads and railroads, 1 for the whole nation. destroyers bombarding cities and mass infantry and gun horseys attacking cities inland.)

anything i need to change for now?

Yes, I've had it with iron and copper once on a huge archipellago map. I owned two islands, but didn't have any iron or copper. On huge maps, resources are spread thinner because each nation typically has more cities and more territory. So sometimes you'll have to fight for your resources. It's better to look for resources on the map first and then start warring.

In that game, I decided to build a large number of obsolete units, get a lot of money, trade for the resource for 10 turns and then use mass upgrades. After that I conquered the resource. Another option was attacking with longbowmen and catapults (no trebuchets, was a vanilla game). That might also have worked.

You could have tried to trade for coal with the civilization(s) on the other island. It sometimes takes some smart diplomacy to get them to trade the resource with you. If they're trading the resource with someone else (you can see this in the diplomacy window), then you should try to break that trade. The best option is often by getting the nations in a war.

banned? What do you mean banned? Banned means that someone in power has stopped you gaining access to something. For instance, banning you from this forum would mean that you don't have access to this forum anymore. You probably mean something else.

There are several guides in the War Academy.
Take a look at the introductionary courses. However, don't try to follow their advice to the letter. This game can't be played at high levels by using some formula or build order. It's a bit more complex than that.

Stop any automating that you're doing and try to decide what the best thing is for each city. If you're automating all of your workers, then the AI is actually running a large part of your civilization. The major part of your economy is run by the AI. Are you playing this game, or watching a movie about civilization building... ;)

The AI is also far less efficient in building (the right) terrain improvements than a competent human player.

A guideline on how many workers you need: No city should be using non-improved tiles for long. Ideally, a city should already have the next terrain improvement ready before it grows large enough to use it. Unimproved tiles are hugely less efficient than improved tiles. If you see that your cities are using unimproved tiles, then you've not build enough workers in the past. Correct that mistake.

Thank you so much Roland!
And about the banned...
I was playing a different game before Civ4 and I was banned from it...
So I turned my eyes to Civ4. xD

I just read Sulla's Walkthrough (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=132711) and I really feel like I know the game much better now. He really did a incredible job with explaning the core components of the game!

I am going to start a new game with Arabs in Noble difficulty, following your tips, Sulla's walkthrough, and tips from the War Academy to improve myself.
Oh, and one more question.

What victory condition should I try to achieve?
Does it vary on how the game goes as in relationship with other civs and such?

Partly, yes, of course. Your chosen leader's unique characteristics also have an impact.

Currency is costing me money. Seriously, every time I finish researching Currency, my income goes down a little. How is this possible?

I have also read that one. It's indeed a good walkthrough of the game.

Good luck.

It depends very much on how the game develops and how you like to play. If you get in multiple wars with other AI civilizations and conquer a large section of land, then domination and conquest victory conditions sound interesting and a diplomatic victory doesn't sound likely (except by voting yourself the winner by having a majority of the votes). However, military victory conditions are more difficult on the larger map types.

A spaceship victory condition requires you to remain competititive in the research race. If your fall behind, then it is very difficult to still win it.

Currency is costing me money. Seriously, every time I finish researching Currency, my income goes down a little. How is this possible?

Maybe you're playing a mod where currency doesn't give you extra trade routes. Maybe there are some other things happening at the same time like founding cities or growing cities which increase the upkeep of your economy. Maybe your cities aren't connected and thus you have no trade routes. In that case currency won't help as it can't create trade routes without a road/river/coastal connection between cities.

Currency can give a direct boost to your economy especially when you have several open borders treaties and road/river/coastal connections between your empire and the other civilizations empire. Foreign trade routes can be very beneficial and an extra foreign trade route with currency can be great.

If you want a more detailed answer, you'll have to upload a savegame from the turn before you research currency.

Good luck with your game.

If your science slider is set to 100% all of your trade income should go to science, but that wouldn't explain an actual decline.

I stay start out with Domination in mind, because it's the one you have to start earliest (besides Culture, which I find boring) and because a successful campaign of conquering will put you in good shape to build the spaceship if you decide to take that route later on.

Trying a couple of new things. Was going to try "whipping", but I don't think I understand the concept completely. (Inconceivable!)

If I've got this right, with the appropriate research, I can implement slavery.

Once I had that, I went into my capital city (where I was building Stonehenge) - after a turn of anarchy - and tried to implement the "hurry" option, but it was greyed. As it was for several turns... Finally, when it was 1 turn from completion, the hurry option was not greyed, so I did not use it. I was going to use it on the next construction project, but again it was not available. What should I be doing to correct this??

You can never whip away more than 1/2 of a city's population; if you read the pop-up that appears when you hover over the pop-rush button, it probably said something like "Requires 5 population, 2 available". Wonders are very expensive to pop rush, so you won't likely be able to do so until they're nearly complete, as you noticed.

To learn more about better civving through abject tyranny, I'd refer you to Zombie69's micromanagement article (scroll down to the section titled "Whip 'til your hands bleed"). For an illustration of it, check out the Victoria ALC game (link in my sig), where Zombie69 and several other slave masters weighed in on how I could best wield the whip to take advantage of an Expansive leader's cheap granaries (just keep in mind that as of Warlords, Vicky is no longer Expansive).

While Zombie69 has a good grasp of the power of whipping, I must add that the article is not up to date with the Warlords expansion pack.

The article describes in detail how to use a bug in the whipping formula that was fixed with the Warlords expansion pack.

In Warlords it works as follows:
-You can never whip more than half the population of a city.
-At normal game speed, you get 30 hammers for each citizen that is lost due to whipping. Any hammer bonusses in the city are applied to these 30 hammers.
-At normal speed, whipping results in 10 turns of unhappiness (1 person unhappy). Repeated whipping will result in stacked unhappiness. The number of people lost due to a single whipping does not influence the number of unhappy people.

Example: Berlin is size 5 and thus can use 2 citizens for whipping. It has a forge giving it a 25% bonus on hammers. You have a settler at 20/100 hammers. You can't pop rush because 2*30*1.25=75 which is less than the 80 hammers still required.
You wait one turn and the settler is at 30/100 hammers. Now you notice that you can pop rush. You do so, and the setter is at 105/100 hammers. Next turn it will be finished. Any hammers (and food) produced in that turn will be added to the 105 hammers and you will thus get production overflow in the next project of Berlin. The city will now be size 3 and will have 1 unhappiness added for 10 turns due to whipping.

Hey guys,

I am trying to set a LAN game between 2 computers in my house. How do you set up one of these? We are both behind a router.

Thanks

I think it might be a growing city that seemingly causes Currency to lower my income then. My game is unmodded but has the latest patch. Maybe it's just coincidence that a city has grown everytime Currency finishes. That seems the only logical explanation. Sorry for not thinking of this. I haven't played CIV in about 40 days.

Any suggestions for using the great downloads, patches, mods, etc. available on this site?

I tried downloading the Warlords patch and the "bluemarble" mod earlier today but no go.

I was able to download the Warlords patch just a little while ago from the Firaxis site, so I'm good there. But...I'm really impressed with what's available and would like to use it. Especially the Fall From Heaven mod. How cool is that??!?

I have a sweet machine with a kickass graphics card, so I don't think it's a problem with specs.

Have had some glitches with the stoopid WOW! Internet/Cable/Phone service though...ugh.
