Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hey guys,

I am trying to set a LAN game between 2 computers in my house. How do you set up one of these? We are both behind a router.

Thanks
Is the problem with actually initially setting up the LAN itself, or with getting it working in Civ4 once it's already up and running? If the latter, it's quite simple... simply both go into Civ4 (make sure you are running the same version and patch), go to the Multiplayer menu, select LAN, and the rest should follow quite easily. :)

If the problem is with getting the LAN set up in the first place, I'm not quite so sure on what I might need to help with, so perhaps you could provide information on what you've got set up so far. Then I might be able to help you out some more there.

Actually, you can have teams on any map by changing the numbers in the second column (guess you knew that) and as far as I know, you will start in random positions.

Actually, every time we have tried it sticks us pretty close. We've never had another civ between us and we've always been on the same piece of land. Some times there's maybe 20-30 squares between us, but usually it's closer to 15-20.

That is correct, the map generator will favour putting players on teams in starting locations which are close together (although there are occasionally exceptions, usually mistakes it makes). The distance will be relative to the map size (usually further on huge maps, etc, but teammates will still usually be closer than rival teams on all map sizes).

I finished that game last night. I killed off all civs on my continent - with about 10 turns to go. I turned on the resource flag and zoomed out and checked all of them. There was NO coal anywhere on my continent. I reviewed the other major one & could see it there.

But NONE on my continent. In fact one of the other civs started trading it to me with about 4 turns left in the game.

So, I researched steam power & RRs, but never had any use for that...

Anyone else ever seen that??

it's rare but i've had it happen to me. twice, not right in a row but in the same week, and drove me crazy!!! the next time i started a game, i didn't want to spoil the fun for myself by knowing the map ahead of time, but i sure didn't want to be stuck with the frustration of not having coal again. so i had hubby sneak a look in worldbuilder and make sure there was some on my continent at least somewhere, even if it was under another guy's starting location, so that i'd not have to cross the ocean for it *giggle*. that broke my string of bad luck *knock on wood*.

in yesterday's game, there were horses on both continents, but the ones on the other continent were spread out and not by any of the starting spots. none of those guys were connected to horses early. germany and egypt had extreme polar starts and it took them forever to get horses. at least they were available tho. that type of situation i see fairly frequently.

i've gone to war for resources plenty of times (yesterday it was uranium), but coal is the only one that i remember not showing up at all on my continent. twice. yes i'm still bitter, does it show?

i am not a computer-type person. i just like to turn it on and play, hubby is my tech support. so i can't talk you through it by any means. but i can tell you that sometimes for us, it's flaky and will only let him join if i start the game. other times, it works fine me joining his game. seems to be no rhyme or reason to this. so if you think you do get the tech stuff sorted out and it still won't work, try having the other person start, before you give up and go futz with the wiring again. it's easy enough to check and just might work ;)

Can anyone tell me if I go into warlords/assets/xml/gameinfo/civ4world info, and change the <iTargetNumCities>4</iTargetNumCities> to a higher number, would that make the AI bulid more cities?

Thanks,

Can someone list all the things that can be traded/transfered between cities, or is it just resources?

EDIT: and I mean by roads.

What else do you mean? Units can be produced in one city and moved to another. Tax money is collected from all cities and can be spent to rush production in a specific city. Science beakers are pooled from all cities and the scientific benefits go to all cities.

No, curiously iTargetNumCities has 2 effects: it determines (along with MapSize) how many cities receive the LargestCityHappiness Bonus for Representation and it influences the range in which the Game looks for Starting Plots...

Don't forget those valuable trade routes, too...

I was trying to keep it simple, as far as I know trade routes are completely automated. Remember Civ2 when you had to build and move caravans around?

I'm still not sure what the questioner was after.

Hello CIV4 forum. I have a few questions maybe you can help me out with. I have played CIV3 complete but have not yet purchase CIV4. I'm a history buff and enjoy playing historical what if's.

In civ4 American Revolution can the British in the game be reinforced and with the new graphics can you still rename units?

In the warlords expansion pack how do you find the French-Indian War, is it a good game. I enjoyed the conquest games in Civ3.

Is there going to be a second expansion pack with more campagins'. I would love to see the Seven Years War in Europe. Does anyboody know of any mods with Seven Years War or other 18th Century conflicks.

Cheers

Well, I'm fairly new to the game, so I may not even know what I'm asking about. How about this: what purpose does linking your cities with roads serve? All the things you listed in your previous post can be achieved without roads (although moving units from city to city are able to move more quickly, correct?

Ah. You can link cities with trade routes via rivers. Once you have sailing, you can link them via coastlines as well, and once you have Astronomy, over oceans.

Not all cities, however, will be adjacent to rivers or coast. Also remember that resources need to be linked to your trade network, usually by road.

Beyond that, since one of the main things you do in this game is move units over terrain, it makes sense to me to lay down as many roads as possible. Granted I often have other priorities, but my the later portion of the mid-game it's how I keep my army of workers busy. Even in the early game, though, I prefer to have roads linking my cities and resources in order to defend them from barbs.

The Civ4 scenarios almost all suck. The only one which even vaguely addresses what you want is the bizarre Omens scenario set in the Ohio Valley in the 1720s. The BtS expansion may give you what you want. The exact scenarios included are not yet known but apparently they concentrate on the post-gunpowder era. Good luck. ;)

I was wondering where to post questions about the Rhyes and Fall mod. I've heard it has its own forum but I don't know where it is.

Also, just in case anyone here is familiar with Rhyes and Fall's bugs and problems, the problem I'm experiencing is that whenever a new civilization appears (at least I think that's exclusively where it happens), the game seems to "freeze" - it'll say "Waiting for other civilizations" for over 4 hours, as if it was calculating the stuff that happens in the comps turns. But I have a fast computer, and it flies through the turns when no new civs are appearing. If anyone knows the fix, i've love to hear it because I love the look of the scenario and wish I could play it

Thanks!

Civ4 - Rhye's and Fall of Civilization - and there your questions will be answered...

(I hope ;) )

I enjoyed China (mostly because I love the movie Hero which takes place in that period) and Genghis Khan. Rise of Rome or whatever it's called this time was fun. Alexander was boring, I quit after conquering Asia Minor.

Its probably software related. Windows firewall or another firewall program is probably blocking it.

1. Turn Fullscreen OFF.

2. Run Civ4/Warlords

3. Go into LAN. Watch area by system tray.

4. If a window pops up asking to deny/accept, allow any connections.

5. Go back to CIV4/Warlords and setup then start the game. Watch the system tray.

One reason I usually prefer mines over windmills is because of the chance to strike it rich. I've found that it seems to increase my chances of having a resource I've just researched if I have mines on all my hills. Not sure if that's proven or not though.
