Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Magnus...youve been so helpful, wish i could help you too....ya know, i remember when civ 1 came out, i was finally able to beat it on emperor....Civ 4, im stuck on noble and goin nowhere....honestly at least this time, im middle of the pack, but theres NO way i could fight a war....all they DO is build military units, and still they have a higher score than me, (bottom right of screen), and SO much more advanced.....UGH!!!! i beat warlord pretty good, noble just has me stuck

Im guess im still trying to figure out what the best civic combo and best science research route to go is....::sigh:: (lol still haviin fun doin it, but is frustrating)

One of the great thing you'll find out in CIV is that there is not best combo or best path. Lot's of choices are available, efficient and enjoyable, and every game can see really different choices, depending on the leader, the neighbours, the land...

True, JuJu, but everyone has their own style of play, ergo, there should be one route that should best suit their style....From prior experience on past CIVs (Civ 1, 2, never played 3) I know Im very warlike, while others may be passive. Therefore for me a police state would best suit my style, while others may use uni. suffrage.....

I think that JujuLautre was highlighting the fact that Civ IV is very dynamic, especially when compared to its predecessors. There are a lot of behind the scenes permutations that directly influence game play.

While a defined civic combination may be good for a certain play style against specific opponents on one map type, simply changing the map, or just one of those opponents, may result in the need for a different combination and approach by the human player.

One of the great things about the Civ series is the replay value, as every game is somewhat different. With Civ IV, I think they wanted to continue that trend, and successfully designed the game to ensure that players will have a different experience every time they start a new game.

Sorry for the stupid and noob question....

I've seen in SS the odds of a combat expressed in percentage (i.e.: 76% - 24%).

How is possible to have that?

What is SS? If this is the old spy missions in vanilla or warlords, the higher percentage is the probability of success if there is no enemy spy on that tile. The second is the probability if there is an enemy spy there. You'll never know since you cannot see spies other than your own. In vanilla and Warlords, a spy being on the tile lessened the chance of success as did enemy units as well.

While on that subject, does anyone know if the same holds true for BTS? Do spies serve a purpose in your territory?

With your unit/stack selected, hold right click and move over the enemy unit. It will display the combat odds.

There are rumors that it helps thwart rival spies, but I believe this is untrue. Spies are stopped/detected by how many espionage points you have vs them, and some city improvements.

Sorry, with SS I meant Screen Shot...

But when I do this I only see the percentage if the combat will be (always almost 100%) the percentage of withdraw from the combat (for mounted units, etc.) and a sort of "balance" of the strong of the units.

I.E.: if are going to combat an axeman vs a chariot with NO BONUSES (for the tile, promotion, city defense, etc.), I'll see -> 5 vs 4

If the axeman has combat 1 (+10% strenght), than I'll see -> 5.5 vs 4

and so and so....

I don't know if my english is good enough to explain this....

The manual says something like that spies can actually target other spies, but in the game this somehow got dropped and they are pretty much useless in your own territory.
And it looks like Solver was on the losing end of this debate during pre-release :D
Don't mention Spies that can see and actively target enemy Spies to me. Please. Otherwise the consequences might be dire.

If anyone mentions it again, I'll go on a strike.

Hmm, I see what you're talking about. I don't know, let me root around in the game options for a second.

Someone looked into the game code and noticed that defending spies in the same tile as attacking spies increase the odds of detection. The security agency did the same. I don't think he mentioned the combination of both so I don't know if there was a cumulative effect.

The chances for finding a spy were pretty small. Having closed borders increased the chances of finding an infiltrating spy.

I don't remember the exact figures. Something like 2% chance (per turn) to find a spy without the counter espionage mission active, with open borders and without a defending spy or security agency. And around 10% chance (per turn) with the counter espionage mission active, with closed borders and with a defending spy or security agency.

I don't remember more details from this post. I read it a few weeks ago. A reasonable tactic to avoid lots of troubles from spies seems to make it expensive for the enemy (having more espionage points against them then they have against you, using the counter espionage mission) and to use a security agency or spy in important cities (where you're building a world wonder or space ship part or your main science city).

Can you post a screenshot of what it looks like when you do that?

Sure.... unfortunately is in italian language:

'Probabilità di combattimento' is for "Percentage of combat"

'Probabilità di ritirata' is for "Percentage of withdraw"

Under "4.40 vs 4.50" are explained the bonuses

(i.e.: +10% forza means +10 % strenght 'cause the chariot has 'combat 1')

Erm...it's all there. Probabilita de Combattimento is the same as the combat odds-what's listed there is the % that you will win the fight..right there it's a 30.4% chance that you will win the fight.

I am sorry to posting like this, but here is so many articles, that they confuse people who don't came here so often. I want to find some guide for Warlords and Beyond the Sword, if possible for download (i.ex. in .pdf or xls. format), so I can see what's new in tihis expansions (descripton of buildings, vassalage.. etc.)?

sorry for my bad english

Oooppsss.... i'm sorry....

I thinked I've seen something little different in some screenshot, but surely I was wrong.....

In fact, "Probabilità di combattimento" is not a great translation...

If you want information about what is new in those 2 expansion packs, then you can find it here:

Civilization IV: Warlords Info Center

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword Info Center

It's interesting to note that Beyond the Sword contains everything in the Warlords expansion pack except the scenarios.

If you want to read articles about strategy or game mechanics, then you can read some articles in the War Academy.
