Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Some friends and I are holding our own GoTM on our website. The save is an epic speed game. I've never tried epic speed before, only standard.

What differences can I expect on epic?

Thanks,
Fardaza

Research and builds both take longer, so you'll have to get used to that.

Whipping also works differently. Each population point whipped gives you 44 hammers before multipliers, not the 30 you get on normal speed; however, it takes 15 turns for the unhappiness created by whipping to go away, not 10.

The big difference, however, is in military, because your units move at the same speed. The longer games are more fun for warring because your units don't become obsolete by the time they arrive at the front. ;)

I play all my games on epic speed and much prefer it to normal.

BTS: If I disable diplomatic victory, can AP and UN still be build and used for the normal resolutions (and the AP's hammer bonus), or do they get completely removed from the game?

Am I right in thinking you can only have 2 national wonders in any city, but as many world wonders as you like?
Cheers

That's correct. The only exception is the OCC (One City Challenge) mode, where you are allowed any number of national wonders in vanilla Civ 4 and Warlords (BtS only permits up to 5 national wonders in the city in an OCC).

But, how doo you get vassals? Is this a Warlords change?
Either by waging war on a civ until it capitulates or by taking on a civ as a vassal peacefully (which will only happen if it is very weak). And yes it is :D
In BtS you can also split up your empire and form a colony which starts out as one of your vassals.

What exactly does obsolete mean? For example, will I get 3 free priests with the Angkor Wat, only for them to be lost with computers? Or will computers give me 3 free priests regardless of completing Angkor?

Cheers.

Obsolete means that a wonder/building doesn't give you any benefits except the culture benefits. It also means that you can't build said wonder/building anymore after it has gone obsolete. There are however some exceptions as monasteries still allow you to build missionaries, but they don't give the 10% research bonus anymore. Maybe, I'm forgetting some of the exceptions...

Angkor Wat doesn't give you 3 free priests. You misread the Wonder description. It allows you to take 3 citizens from the city and turn them into priests. That is something very different.

The obsoleting technology sometimes gives similar benefits than the wonder or building that it obsoletes (corporation oboletes the Great Lighthouse which granted 2 trade routes in coastal cities and the corporation technology gives you 1 extra trade route in all of your cities), but such bonuses are always mentioned in the description of the technology. Computers doesn't gives a bonus that is similar to Angkor Wat or any of the other wonders that it obsoletes.

D'oh....I knew that angkor didn't give three free priests....twas a long day at the office.:crazyeye:

But thanks much for the info...that's what I thought but I wasn't sure.

Angkhor's big bonus, is that all priests added as specialists, act in effect as improved engineers. Thats the same 2:hammers: but 1:gold: too. The only downside with this, is that it tends to pop a lot of Great Priests, when they are past their selling date, as it were.

OVERCROWDING IS KILLING ME!!!! How do I deal with it? no matter what i build in the city (colloseum, temples, theaters, blah blah blah) i still have the black smoke, and soon, they wont work tiles, starvation sets in, you know the rest.....what else can I do?

By the way....one thing i totally neglect is religion...when it prompts me to convert, i always ignore....whats the pros/cons, and what if diff cities have diff religions?

haha, and one more thing.....when its a workers turn, and a blue circle shows up in a tile ive already improved, and theres nothing recommended to do in that tile (no improvement is flashing) then whats the deal?

Use slavery civic to lower your population in unhappy cities (built happiness inflastructure). Increase Culture slider (theather and colloseums effectivness depend on it). Trade resourses.

Pros: Extra happiness, extra culture, use of religion-based civics, use of religion based buildings and wonders, income from shrines, better relations with AI that share religion
Cons: worse relations with AI that don't share religion (hurts a lot). costs associated with spreading the religion.
and what if diff cities have diff religions
Cities with state religion will gain most of the benefits, while other cities will not. (unless you use Free Religion civic)
blue circle shows up in a tile ive already improved
Don't know. Maybe the game is proposing changing the tile improvement? I don't listen to blue circles very much.

Question:
Is there an autoplay option. Is there a way to oversee a game played by AI only?

A little argument. Changing from no religion to a religion stops you getting culture from other religions([edit] so actually reduces the amount of culture your civ generates). This is the main reason I do not change religions (possibly equivalent to worse relations with AI that don't share religion) .

Choosing religion has no effect on use of religion based buildings and wonders, income from shrines. Of course spreading a religion does this, but this is seperate from choosing a state religion.

There was a mod I was looking at, that used genetic algorithms to try and "evolve" a bettter AI. That allowed you to do this. Perhaps you can find it with the google search box. Sorry I can remember no more. I do not think you can do it with the base game.
