Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Here's one. I see the mods American Revolution,Desert War,Greek world and the tutorial file. These are at the end of the trail of files that read....Program files-2k games-Firaxis games -SidMeyers civ 4 gold -Mods-. I try to open them and some strange things happen like the Revolution one started me off with one musket man,so I look around and found a hut and open it and get a free city wich I beggin to build more musket guys,no buildings can be built,WTH ?The Desert War one looks good too but ??? ??? ???.Has anyone ever gotten these to run?

TY

That means...I try to open them, seeing them in program files is one thing but running it is another .Do you see them ? Has anyone ever seen these? It is a simple thing I ask.

as I said, you don't "open" directly the mods. You launch the main game, then either go and find them in the "play a scenario" menu, or go in the "advanced" menu and use "load a mod". Then the game starts again and the mod is loaded.

Hey guys, I'm completely new to the game and was wondering how can I play with everything from both expansion packs active in my game (Warlords and Beyond the Sword).

Is this possible? Do I just have to play from my regular CivIV shortcut. Please help...

Just play Beyond the Sword (BtS). It includes all the features of the original (vanilla) and Warlords as well.

OK, it's my first proper game after a few messing about and I seem to be doing OK. I expanded until I bumped up against the coast on one side and Alexander on the other on a land mass, and decalred war on Alexander and punched through on an ithsmus to lots of land the other side, he's sinced begged for peace. I have three questions though.

1 - on the score list on the lower right hand side it has a little triangle of arrows next to each AI name what does that mean? It's the same triangle of arrows that indicates your own cities are in your trade network. I'd be surprised if it meant I was trading with all the AI as the manual says I need open borders to be able to do that and I only have open borders with one of the AI.

2 On a similar subject my foreigh advisor flow chart shows lines between me and all the AI showing a blue line - open borders. When I select 'what deals do we have' I only have open borders with one of the AI - is this a bug?

3- Gold. What use is it? Why shouldn't I pour all my commerce into research providing my maintenance is covered? Is it good for some other reason? I seem to be doing quite well without having to use it - so - what's it for?

Thanks

1/ It means you have a connection with the said AI, prerequisite to get trade routes. But it also serves other purposes, like the spreading of religions.

2/ No idea; screenshot ?

3/ First use, as you said, is cover maintenance expenses. Other than that, gold can be used to upgrade troops, to trade with the other players, to rush buildings with the Universal Suffrage Civic, to pay for some random events, to help spreading corporations (in BTS), to use spy missions (in Vanilla and Warlords)...

You have no idea what Im talking about huh?I take it these files are gimps left by the programers, left unfinished.

I think he answered you:

1. How do I download modcomps? I wanted some from RFC.
2. When people create buildings or units, do they do it text based, or using a physical creator, like sims type thing.

Exact. I'm trying hard to figure what you want to do and what you're doing. So I gave you general instructions. If you could be more clear and precise about what you do and what you expect that to do, perhaps I could understand

1. How do I download modcomps? I wanted some from RFC.
2. When people create buildings or units, do they do it text based, or using a physical creator, like sims type thing.

1. Try asking directly to the person making it of in the Modcomp's thread. Each one is different.
2. No idea. Try asking in the creation and customization forum?

Noob question here, please don't blame me for not looking at all 491 pages.

1. If the wonder is obsoleted, would the great people point and it's culture points be lost? Or just its effect only?
2. How do I bribe civ to fight each other? I read so many tips saying try to bribe but the option go to war with other civ is always red. Do I have to be friendly with a nation to tell to go to war?
3. I tried to spread a religion but it says that I can't, even though that city doesn't have that religion, why?

1. Culture and GPP remain. (but any GPP generated by wonder bonus specialists (like great library) are lost)
2. Not Sure
3. The Civ is running the Theocracy civic- it only allows the spead of their state religion within that civ's cities

On Chuot's 2nd question:

Generally the other civ has to be "Pleased" or "Friendly" with you to consider going to war with another civ at your behest, and at "Cautious" or lower with the target. Hover your mouse over the red-lined target civ in your erstwhile ally's diplomacy screen and you'll get clues as to why it's not an option.
  • "We just don't like you enough" means exactly what it says, their opinion of you is not high enough for them to go to war if you ask;
  • "We can't betray our close friends!" means they may like you, but they also like your chosen target;
  • "We have enough on our hands right now" means they're already preparing for war with someone (watch out--it could be you).
To get it to be an option usually takes some planning and effort. You could try, for example, spreading different religions to each civ (ally and target) to exacerbate religious tensions--get your ally to convert to your state religion (or adopt theirs), and try to get your target to adopt a different religion from both of you.

Idiot proofing question:

I just got Civ IV. I've played plenty of Civ III. My capital has a horse in it's radius. There's a pasture on the horse and a road to my capital. I have horseback riding. Why isn't the horse available?

Thanks,
Merc

From what you describe, it should be. Perhaps you are trading it away?

A screenshot or a save game would be welcome

and welcome to cfc ! :band:

I have some:

When going for a cultural victory, is it better to make the early great artists join a city than to stockpile them and use them at the end of the game for the lagging city? I know there are many variables to consider for this, so I’m thinking of these ones: first artist pops… I don’t know, as soon as the game allows it to; all cultural building available for 3-4 religions, until Liberalism, are built on spot; almost no world wonders; normal speed and aim for cultural win before 1800. If yes, what is the maximum year limit for this to do (make them join a city)?

On diplomatic victory, is there a lower limit for the number of… umm… those + thingys other leaders have towards you that will guarantee you will get voted?

When I’m attacking a city, is there any way I can choose the defenders my units fight with? I would like to take an archer with a unit that has promotion against archers, but instead I get one that has promotions or bonuses against my attacker. This also happens when I’m being attacked…

Is it better to use the great scientist to make academies in different cities rather than to make them all join the science city?

Where can I watch full game plays?

Thanks! and sorry for my english... it's not my mother tongue, but I hope it's readable:)

Wow, thank you GooglyBoogly and Sisiutil for fast and detailed reply. I have another question about unit stacks. Unit's strength reduce in a large stack, I assume this would affect when defending only. When I'm attacking, would this reduction still there?.

In a non-important tiles, would you recommend that split into 2 tiles squares with 2 units on each or 4 units on a single tile square to keep the reduction low?

Unit strength is completely unaffected by how many units are in the stack. Generally a big stack is safer than scattering units, since its easier to have all possible counter units in it. The only downside is if you're attacked by units that do collateral damage, which will affect several units in the stack, and might just provide a reason to scatter troops. However there's a maximum number of units that can be affected by collateral damage (6?), so the solution is just to make an even bigger stack.

There's a couple of other issues, like flanking attacks and nukes which are bad news for big stacks of units, but normally it's best just to keep your units together.
