Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks fr the answers. I meant health for crabs (mis type), but I'm not getting the benefit from them, i.e. they are not showing in my resources list at all?!

1)Crabs give health, not happiness.
You can get a lotion for that btw

@Sleeping Bear

The vassal is not allowed to red out options in the diplomacy screen - all resources are always available for trading. You can also demand resources off them, which they must either accept, or break free from you.
Odd, Got a vassal last night and he had Steel listed as a tech, but it was red and I could not trade for it. :(

Techs can be redded out but not resources. Other benefits are increased happiness, a war ally, and half of their score also counting for you.

My vassals red out resourses all the time. It's usually things they only have on of, and are fairly vital: horses, Iron, Bronze, and occasionally their last health resourse.

I'll try to post a screenshot, but it's too late tonight.

Vassals don't usually red out resources, you can demand them as tributes etc. to keep them down on their knees. Otherwise them being a vassal would have no benefits to you for all the costs they incur.

A vassal is not supposed to be able to red out resources (they can red out tech). The only exception might be resources that you already have, and there is no point in having multiple copies of.

How do I keep my treasury full? I am new to Civ 4, but I have played all the others. I am building harbors, markets and courthouse, but that does not seen to be enough. Am I building too many cities? Does that matter?

I noticed that you didn't mention your tax-science rate at all. When the science rate is at 100% and the tax rate at 0%, then your spending 0% of your commerce on gold income and so the costs are likely to be significantly higher than the income, draining your reserves.

There are essentially 2 ways to get or maintain a treasury:

1) limit the expenses by not expanding your empire too fast and getting courthouses everywhere. The Forbidden palace can also limit your city upkeep and choosing cheap civics can also limit the civic upkeep.

2) get a huge commerce output in your empire and spend a part of that commerce on tax income. Markets, grocers, banks and the Wall Street small wonder increase this tax income. Harbours, customs house and foreign trade routes can increase the commerce from trade routes while well developed cottages and rivers and some special resources can increase the commerce yield from terrain.

This second way is usually more effective at getting a treasury, but it takes a while to get a significant commerce output which makes it hard to expand fast at the start of the game while still maintaining a decent economy.

Note that there are other ways to get gold directly which are usually less important but can be significant in some games: Holy Shrine income, merchants, trade mission of the great merchant, Corporation income, selling resources for gold per turn with some AI civilisations, selling maps and technologies for gold with some AI civilisations, some great wonders, losing a great wonder race, demanding tribute and some others that I'm forgetting at the moment.

Ok I have a question:

Can I change the name of each civilzation for a game? So instead of it saying: Catherine declared war on you it will say xxx declared war on you. I dont want to do it to just one civ, I wanna do it to them all for a map. Thanks:)

These may not be noob questions, but they are quick and don't deserve a thread of their own:

1. I've noticed (BtS 3.17, with Solver's patch) that my Bombers have stopped causing collateral damage to units in Aztec cities. Is this a feature (undocumented, because I couldn't find it in the 'pedia) of Bunkers? My Bombers cause collateral damage as usual versus less advanced AIs.

2. I've reduced Montezuma to 2 cities, but while the Capitulation option was there a few turns ago, it's gone now. Instead, it's redded out, with the subtext "we are afraid of your enemies!" What's the mechanics behind this? My only enemies are Monty and Capac, and Capac is down to 3 cities and has even worse tech than Monty, lower on PG, etc. More to the point, I have at least triple the military of anyone else on the map, and am the tech leader by about 4-5 techs, too. So what gives? If Monty's my vassal, nobody is a threat to him... at this point in the game, the only person he should be afraid of is me.

1/ There's a bug with bunkers. You can install the unofficial update of the unofficial patch for that ;)

2/ don't know; perhaps they only look at how their own power compare to the others, and not consider your power

Now I have Civ 4 with all the mods and add ons(beyond the sword). My question is How do I open the Veit Nam mod and the Revolution mod I see in the folders.Do these work?I did manage to get the Revolution one working and it started me off with one Musket unit, this did not make sense.

where can I find the civilipedia för the final frontier , without opening the game?
is it uploaded or any screenshots on the tehnology on internet. or a list of all of them

VIet-Nam? Revolution?
Are you perhaps talking about the "American Revolution" Mod ?
If so, then either use the "play a scenario" menu, or advanced/load a mod

As for FInal Frontier, I don't think there is any refence online.

I have vista and the opening movie skips and the winning movie skips and the occasional wonder(not that i care, just annoying)
This might have more to do with the power of your computer or video card than with the OS.
