Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I noticed that in Civ 4 because of the 3Dness of it, when you build roads and other improvements in a forest tile it has less trees. Is it possible to accidentally destroy the forest with improvements?

I dont mean like mines or anything else that cant be built on forest.

Actually you cant build mines anywhere but Hills now can you? Sorry I am used to playing PTW. I just got Civ4 Vanilla a few days ago.

Building a road through a forested tile leaves the forest intact, don't worry. However, any other improvement (with the sole exception of a fort, and only in Beyond the Sword) on a forested tile removes the forest.

Normally you cannot build mines on "flat" tiles, no, unless there is a resource requiring a mine. Iron, copper, uranium, and gems commonly appear on flat tiles; I've never seen coal or aluminum show up anywhere else but a hill, however.

I had thought you could also build Camps on Elephants and leave the Jungle, or Camps on Deer and leave Forest. Or am I misremembering?

No, you remember correctly.

I have played hot seat with roommates and we just put the screen on a turntable and each seat on different sides of the desk. Then you just turn the screen and hand over the mouse. Assuming your question was of a pratical nature. Otherwise it's under the multiplayer section.

Hello.

Im a new player. I have got CIV 4 and BTS expansion before couple of days, and my friend who knows a little about the game came over and show me how to start.

Now i have a question for the experienced guys in here.
My friend suggested me to start play with CIV 4 the original game ONLY. He says its too much details for me as a new player to deal with BTS. what do you think?

Should i start with BTS directly? or first learn about the game with the originial CIV 4?
And what are most of the guys here playing? Original or BTS?

Thx for any help.

I don't really think it matters, (as a new player many of the more advanced features won't really be used, such as espionage) but if I had to choose I would say that you should start with BtS. This is because some numbers are changed, and traits, and things like that. For example, in BtS forts can act as canals across a 2 or 1 tile stretch. So if you had such an isthmus, and you were still thinking like in vanilla, were forts can't hold ships, you might not use this new feature to your advantage at all!

:)

Basically, start with BtS because you will become to used to vanilla.

Thx alot. I guess i will start with BTS as you suggest.

Another Quick question - what do you think is the best leader for a new player like me? i have finished the tutorial and played about a 3/4 game with a friend.
What leader or what traits i should look for that will help me at the beginning to cover a bit for my inexperience?

I'd say its a judgment call. How well does your friend know your? How well do you know him? And how well do you know yourself? Use your own judgment.

I'm sensing that since you ask, you'd rather just jump in the deep end. And thats just fine. My advice would, however, be this: Unless your friend really showed you the ropes, you're better off playing the tutorial first. And you'll find that one in the Basic game (aka Vanilla), not BtS (since its an expansion, for people who already know Civ4). Also note that some very basic stuff might be missing from the BtS Civilopedia (for the afore mentioned reason).

As for complexity. The game is complex enough to keep experienced players learning new rules and strategies for years on end. The game has been out for a good many years and people are still studying it to figure out exactly how everything works. My point would be that as a beginner it really doesn't matter how much additional stuff BtS brings to the table, since its all new to you.

So, don't get bogged down in details or feeling inadequate because you don't know exactly how something works. Try something that feels intuitive and see where it takes you. Make a mental note of the outcome and try another approach next time (even if it went better than expected, just so you get the experience of doing it another way). In time you will learn ever more stuff.

Also, if you choose a "Custom Game" you can disable some of the extras like vassal states or espionage. And in the in-game options there are some useful tools like automation. You just don't need to bother with every single detail at this point, as the game, in some extend, is balanced in a way that equals out some of the decisions you would be making yourself. (You're bound to make bad ones as well as good ones.) The micromanagement is really for the seasoned player who can afford to be distracted from the grand strategy of the game. Because this should be your focal point at this stage.

Instead of worrying about one bad seed of a city that only causes you problems, you focus on your goal at hand - and at your opponents. Don't forget to play the diplomacy because you're busy optimizing your troops. Or neglect your research goals because there are troublemakers some corner of your empire. The petty stuff will mean nothing once you win the game session. Its much more important to see the big picture and aim for a victory goal (and there are plenty to choose from).

Happy Civin'!:king:

edit: I'd recommend Catherine of Russia for the cultural trait alone. It really helps with the initial expansion and should be an asset to you through out the game. The Cossack is also a sweet unit in mid game. :D

Baldyr, Thx alot for your answer.

And thats exactly why i doubt my friend opinion and ask you guys about it here in this forum. I just wanted to get feedback about this issue from ppl with the same thinking as me, since i dont really know this game and maybe im wrong.

If this is the situation, i cant see why not start with BTS directly.

I just would like to know if the absolute majority here on this forum is playing BTS or Vanilla? I would like to get involve in the forum so i would also like to play as the majority of this forum (allthough its definetely not the primary condition for what to choose).

Since BtS is the latest version of Civilization (there have been many before this one), I'd reckon its the version most folks play. Especially at this community, at least this is my impression. Its mostly new players who play Vanilla, people who haven't gotten the expansions yet. More and more new players seem to be getting the complete package from the get go, though, so the Vanilla only crowd will only get smaller with time.

So, welcome to the BtS club, then! :king: :bts: :goodjob:

Speaking of versions - you did download the latest (last?) BtS patch (v3.19, I believe)? You should do that in any case since then you really will be playing the same game as the rest (?) of us.

What exactly does this mean?
If a Farm has access to Fresh Water it will yield 1 additional :food:. Fresh water means basically rivers, but also lakes. (Cities get :health: bonus from Fresh Water, also. This is why you might need the Aqueduct.)

So, under certain conditions a Farm will "spread" this Fresh Water also to adjacent tiles. You can see if a tile has Fresh Water by mousing over it, by the way. This way you know where to build your Farms - or how to plan your irrigation.

So it essentially makes farms work like they did in Civ3? Where you can build a farm next to a farm because it provides fresh water.

Haven't installed BTS yet, but i will do so.

How can you move an AI screen, e.g. when the AI makes an offer but you need to view advisor information before responding? One of the AIs offered me a city, but I couldn't view the map to see where it was because of the screen.

Thanks.
