Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

How do I go about patching Civilizations IV Complete do I use the normal patches or is there on just for the compleate edition. Also I have just installed and would like to know what patches I now need to install?

Thanks

Commerce. They make commerce, which is :commerce:, not gold, which is :gold:.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that.

Now for my own question: What is the highest scoring HOF game EVER?

I believe it is 3,172,513 (Small map, Marathon speed, Deity level, domination victory 1740BC), by WastinTime.

@ kcd_swede:

i checked my save game and the activated options but they look ok. show enemy moves is "on" and quick moves are all "off". nevertheless i cannot see enemy pillaging or bomber attacks on ships or cities. i only receive a text message which i can re-read in the event log and there is a bubble active for a very short time.

combat action where civ doesnt auto focus on the event:
"Your jet fighter has shot down..."
"Your jet fighter was damaged..."
"A pasture has been destroyed by a russian bomber..."

Stuff like that is never "shown" as it never has an animation even when you do it yourself, so not like there's anything to show. You can click on the text in the event log to see the actual place where it happened though.

More questions sorry :D

If I have a military city that I queue up say 5 cannons, is there a way that I can tell all the units being built to go travel to a way point without me having to constantly move everyone after they finishing building?

Thanks for the answer!

For the second question, I meant if wealth/research multipliers like library or market multiply the total amount gotten from a city (including specialists, trade routes, and shrines), or just the amount produced by working the land round the city.

Maybe not a newbie question, but can someone confirm that there are no 10 turns of forced peace between AI's. I bribe Hanny to peace with Hammy in 1080AD, the next turn he goes back into wheoohrn mode, and then 1100AD he reDOWs Hammy. No AP, no vassal state complications. I sort of feel like I just gave up Education for nothing.

Nothing to be sorry about, after all that's what this thread/forum is for :)

Select the city, then shift+rightclick on a tile to set a rally point (a point where all completed units automatically travel). You can set the same rally point for each city by alt+clicking (or ctrl+click to select only cities on the same continent) a city to select all cities, then shift+rightclicking to set the rally point.

There's no 10 turns of forced peace when you bribe AIs to peace. This is a special action as the AIs cannot do it (AI can't bribe other AIs to stop warring) so there's no forced peace either. If the AIs stop warring on their own accord then there is a normal forced peace.

Can someone make a list of the commonly used short terms on this site? For example: reDOWs and wheoohrn. What do those, and other ones that are used often, mean? And what's the difference between gold and commerce?

this list already exists - go to the civ IV war academy, where they have this and many other great articles, or go here:
http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/reference/acronyms.php

commerce is income you generate in your cities, that can be either gold or science depending on where you set the slider. gold is cash you can use to upgrade troops or buy techs for example, but can only be turned into research indirectly, by for example running the sldier at a deficit. does this help?

Two questions.
1) I'm using the slavery civic, but I don't know how to sacrifice the population (as in, I can't find the button or menu).

2) How do I see the event log?

Welcome to CFC :band:

use the Beyond the Sword 3.19 patch - if you have the European version of Complete thats all - if you have the US version you also need the Colonization patch. Get both from the downloads database here.

2) How do I see the event log?

  1. Look in the city screen at bottom right. Immediately below the DRAFT button is the slavery button (on the left; the one on the right is the Universal Suffrage gold rush button).
  2. In the Civ interface at upper left, below your treasury amount, you'll see a small icon that looks like a book and pen. That opens the event log. Ctrl+TAB also does the trick.

Ah; thanks for that.

I can imagine you only need one city dedicated to great people but what ratio do people go for with production gold science cities? Also what about the capital? For the most part it almost always seems like a good city for everything.

I want to have a few production (1 till 3) cities to build World Wonders which will be enhanced by national wonders which increase production like the IronWorks and a few production cities for super units which will be enhanced by national wonders like the Heroic Epic, West Point and Great Instructors. I will also build a city which is geared towards commerce with Oxford University and a city which is producing lots of gold due to a Shrine of a religion and Corporation Headquarters combined with Wall Street.

My other cities which will be the majority as I play on huge maps with many cities and they will be somewhat generalist cities. They do produce a decent amount of hammers so that they can construct the commerce buildings at a decent rate and next to that they produce a good amount of commerce. If needed, they can produce units at a decent rate. They will typically not need to build the offensive part of my military as the military cities will be doing that constantly, but they might build a few defensive units.

When no special modifiers are present from national wonders, there is little reason to specialise. A city which generates a good amount of commerce will want to have good modifiers from buildings and to get those buildings it needs hammers and production bonuses from production buildings. And a strong city is a big city and to become big it needs all kinds of happiness and health increasing buildings which requires even more hammers. It's very hard to get a powerhouse commerce city without some decent hammer output.

Your first city is usually an excellent city. Sometimes it can have several different functions and it becomes hard to choose. It can sometimes be easier to choose when you have settled more of your lands and see what type of city is still needed.
When you use the bureaucracy civic, make sure that the palace is located in a city with a good commerce and/or hammer output. It can be worth it to move the palace to another city when your capital is performing the role of a great person farm.

2. How are ressource multipliers from buildings, such as library or market, applied? Do they count the total amount of wealth/research produced in a city and then add to it, or do they only count the commerce produced directly by working tiles around a city (so not taking into account specialists, shrines or trade routes)? I always assumed the latter, but if it's the total amount, I definitely need to specialise my cities more with markets + Merchants etc...

Commerce from tiles and trade routes is added. Next a special modifier like the bureaucracy bonus in your capital is applied. The value of commerce is then divided into gold, science, espionage and culture dependent on the settings of these sliders. Then directly acquired science, gold, culture and espionage is added from sources like specialists, world wonders like the Spiral Minaret, Settled Great Persons and Corporations. These values are then multiplied by the multipliers provided by the various buildings and national wonders in the city.

Say the capital of a civilisation has 30 commerce from tiles and 20 from trade routes and is benefiting from the bureaucracy civic. It also has a library and Oxford University and is using 1 scientists. The civilisation is using a science rate of 60% at the moment.

Then the commerce output will be 1.5 * (30 + 20) = 75. The base science value will be 0.6 * 75 + 1*3 = 45 + 3 = 48. The modified science value will be 2.25 * 48 = 108.

The Bug Mod shows these calculations when you hover the mouse over the values in the city.

How do I go about patching Civilizations IV Complete do I use the normal patches or is there on just for the compleate edition. Also I have just installed and would like to know what patches I now need to install?

First check the versions of vanilla, Warlords and BTS you have ingame. Then compare them with the versions of the patches here. Then download and apply the latest patches as needed.

Don't use the ingame updater to get the latest patch of BTS. It doesn't work for some reason.

2) How do I see the event log?

1) It's a button within the city view. It's just above the various governor settings.

2) It's a button in the top left part of the main map view. You can also access it by pressing CTRL TAB.

Welcome to civfanatics hadlowj and TCoZ!:band::beer:

Edit: It took me too long to post this. Some answers were already provided.

2) How do I see the event log?

1) If you enter one of your city's screen, at the bottom side of the screen (right of where you select the troop/building that you want to build and just below the botton that says draft). Please note that you need to have enough population to sacrifice otherwise you ca't do it.

2) the event log is on the top left corner of the game screen and is just below where how much gold you have is indicated.

Yes, it does. Thanks. :)

Hello again,

Apparently, my question got bumped by the plethora of posts, so here it is again:

I am wondering if it is possible to add new civilizations during a game using World Builder? Thanks to all who answer.
