Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I know the units block barb spawning in a 5x5 area; what range do cultural borders have? Is it 2 tiles, like units?
I believe it is so. Just imagine of the cultural borders were full of units at every tiles.

I don't know of a way to do that, but the 'enter' button on your keyboard works.
Therefore if you can configure your mouse software so the mouse3 button = ENTER, that oughtta do the trick.

Shift + Enter is actually the shortkey to force End of Turn, so that one would skip all the nonsense and quit the turn.

Isn't there an option in the options menu to "Not wait at end of turn" or something like that? The next turn just starts itself... everything all melds together making for a very disconcerting experience. (Or did I just dream it?)

Yes. You'll be kicking yourself when you read this.
There is an option in the Options menu called "Wait at end of turn."

I use the end of turn options at the game start when you have nothing to do but move your scout around. It speeds up thing early.

That's a really big question. Better answers come with specific questions and screenshots/saves... but for diplomatic win you almost have to have Isabella's same relegion to get her vote. Wars can be positive diplomatic points if you join in wars with many players against a common hated enemy. You have to push hard to get Japan on your side. Start early making trades; even if they are not the best for you and get open borders. Also AI's will make demands/ask for help; refusing can cost you in diplomacy.

If anyone is close to space race attack them and raze their capitol. Bribe everyone you can into war to stop them do whatever it takes.

Thank IAM,
I will try that, but razeing a Capital City, what impact will that have on the enemies ability to finish spaceship production????

If you capture or raze an enemy capital after they launched their ship but before it reaches its destination, their mission will automatically fail.

Silu,

Im playing the normal civ 4 original. As soon as you complete your last ship-part, you win the game. I do not think your answer aplies to the original civ 4.

ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS????

Two suggestions. Play BtS because it adds very much to the game. And do not use all caps, that makes people seem either rude or stupid.

Utopia6666, I believe that you simply need more experience. As you improve in the different areas of the game you'll see better results also. Right now you seem to be playing at the edge of your capabilities, which is good for learning. Just because you don't actually win any of the conditions doesn't mean that you're playing badly, but rather than there's still quite some room for improvement.

Instead of basically replaying the same game over and over again on different maps, try to focus on one new thing you've previously overlooked in every game, like money or religion or experience for your units. You might still not win these games but once you've improved in enough areas you will be able to win pretty much every time (at the present level of difficulty).

Your gameplay could probably be tighter and your priorities could be reconsidered. If you tend build a lot of Wonders, try building more units and war more. If you tend to build most buildings in most cities, try city specialization instead. If you always have a set number of defensive units in all your cities, try a more cost effective defensive strategy, or maybe a mobile defense? Open that mind of yours.

Its all about being efficient so its not always the best thing to research every single Tech or build every single Wonder. You really need to consider whether or not you need something before you decide to get it. Otherwise you're basically wasting resources.

Does a city blocked by floating ice function as a coastal city in all respects., except for the ability to launch ships to sea?

Thx for that, because im a perfectionist, I often dont keep an open mind. I usually try for every single tech, every single city improvment, every wonder etc. I will try to stay on a certain game-plan and avoid certain things.

One last question, who is your favourite leader and why??

I think Inca is the best all around civ to start with. Gives you a strong early start and is flexible.

You can build forts in certain situations to give the city ocean access for fleet production. The forts will act as a canal.

Start this game over from the 4000 BC autosave, and don't build any wonders, and go for raw expansion and a Domination Victory, just to see how much different it plays out.
