Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Good question... I've often wondered if it produces a shape of land rather than a style or formation of it. One time I played a Fractal map and it turned out to have regular land but a land shape in a giant zig-zag pattern and seemed extremely unrealistic. I cannot answer your question, but I'd like to chip in that it seems like it only generates a "random" shape of a map rather than the tectonics or aridity, food level etc...

Fractal sometimes gives really interesting (not the same as realistic) maps. I just played a game with Carthage on a map with two continents, one of them was a quite normal one and the one I was on was a huge double continent connected by a narrow land bridge like Americas. Probably the first time I found fort canals very useful.

I made a mod adding some new units for rome, but whenever i load the mod, none of my units r there. i dont understand why it isnt working. im pretty sure i did everything correctly

Well, if they don't show up, I'm pretty sure you didn't do everything correctly

You should doublecheck your mod, and if you still can't find our what's wrong, post it on the forums so someone a bit more experienced may take a look at it. Good luck with your modding!

The Creation and Customization Forum on this site is definitely the best place to go for questions about modding. Good luck!

Absolute 0 isn't reachable after you settle your capital, since there's a flat +1 beaker from "having any cities" :) That 1bpt is easy to reach though, provided you don't have stuff like settled GS/GE/GSpy or the University of Sankore.

Some quality answers there. Thanks very much (SS-18 ICBM, EsaKo, Baldyr and others).

I really must familiarise myself with the city screen, it is not very intuitive for a n00b though must say.

You don't say? I have been wondering what kind of a genius came up with the idea for using :commerce: and :gold: icons to represent completely different things. Someone really wanted to confuse as many people as possible.

And you are very much welcome. Enjoy playing Civ and if you have anything to ask, please do so!

1. Gilgamesh is pleased with me and goes WHEOOHRN. Due to my low power rating and world diplomacy i believe i might be the target.
2. While WHEOOHRN he turns friendly with me.
3. We sign a defensive pact.
4. I get attacked by someone else and now we are at war together.

Question: Considering i was the target...
- does this war reset his initial WHEOOHRN? Am i safe now?
- will he resume WHEOOHRN (against me) after this war?

Thanks in advance :)

You're welcome! :king:

Most of the core game concepts have been there from the game's very conception, and city management haven't changed all that much from the first version. It makes it easier for old players to get into the new edition, but new players might benefit from some rethinking of the game interface and other core concepts.

Its all somewhat logical though and all you need is simple arithmetic to figure it all out. Once you add up all the values and whatnot in the City Screen it should all make sense to you. One tip is to hover the mouse cursor over the different values and lists to get a breakdown of the math behind them. So, if you wonder why it is that your city is producing some amount of :gold: per turn, simply hover the Gold output to see what portion comes from :commerce:, what is coming from specialists and how the all building multipliers affect these numbers. Do the numbers and they should add up.

Once you understand what's happening in the City Screen your game will be on another level altogether.

- No, you're not safe
- Possibly, sometimes even during this war

Thanks for the link Roland. I suppose Shuffle might be better suited for more randomness. Though I do appreciate guaranteed continental landmasses.

well i did double check my mod, but im a total noob at modding and i dont c anything wrong with it. if there is a problem i wont b able to recognize it.

Did you do all your work in XML? Because I believe you need to enter any new stuff into the DLL also... But I wouldn't know since I'm yet to manage this myself.

If you used an online guide for adding more units, make sure you followed its instructions carefully, as you may need to edit more files than you would realize by simply trying to mimic the XML in the core game.

If you didn't use an online guide, do so! That'll save you a lot of time spent pondering at your XML and thus increases the amount of productive modding time available for you!

Defensive Pacts don't do anything for you unless they fear your DP partner. They obviously don't fear themself. very trickky things....

I had a DP with two different civs, civ A and civ B. Civ A was in WHEOOHRN and I suspected I was the target. Civ A then attacked Civ B which did 2 things: (1) it cancels my DP with Civ A, and (2) It forces my automatic declaration of war on Civ A.

Thus, I get all the negative diplo for you declared war on our friend".

Of course, Civ B never saw an enemy unit. But I sure did!

Be careful with those things.

yes i used a guide, and all my work ws done in xml

Do they show up in the civilopedia? And are you using any other mods with it? I made one with a new leader in which everything worked, except I couldn't be him. I had the BAT mod installed with it, so when I took out the BAT mod, it worked fine.
