Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Yes it is useless to build the Hydro or Nuke as it won't help boost production. You'll be better off working on the tech path that will get you to Recycling Centers to eliminate the Unhealthiness from Coal.

If you stay within this actual Thread and Search using the keywords, Coal, Hydro, Nuclear Plants, you will pull up some very good info on the subject in the other 850 some pages. Don't use the "forum search" button at the top of the page, your looking for the button that says: "search this thread", it has Thread tools to the left of it, and Rating to the right, just below the page numbers listing. I spent a lot of time before finding this valuable resource

THANKS, I had no idea about the search thread option. This should stop a lot of useless posts from me :p

Is it possible to upgrade all units of a certain type everywhere without having to do each one individually?
Yes. Holding ALT while you click upgrade will upgrade all units of that type that are inside your cultural borders, as long as you have the money in your treasury to do it. If you don't have enough money, the game will upgrade units until it runs out.

Holding ALT and hovering over the upgrade icon (with a unit selected) will show you how much money you need to upgrade all the units. Hope that helps. :)

I'm still confused about power plants.

If I build a coal one first, does that mean it's useless to build a hydro or nuclear plant?

You'll get 2 less :yuck: with a hydro/nuclear plant over coal plant.

There are three sources of :yuck:

--- Buildings
A Factory gives 1 :yuck:

--- Resources
Access to Coal and Oil each give 2 :yuck:

--- Power
Coal Power gives 4 :yuck:
Hydro/Nuclear Power gives 2 :yuck:

If you build a Coal Plant and then later a Hydro Plant, you will only get 2 :yuck: from Power instead of 4.

Note that Recycling Center only takes care of Buildings :yuck: and has no effect on Resource or Power :yuck:

Learn something new every day. That'll come in real handy. Thanks, PrettyLemonPerson. :goodjob:

^Solid advice here, and a clearer explanation of the unhealthiness that comes with Power/Plants.

If it fits into your overall game strategy I normally try to find a tech path that will get me to Three Gorges Damn Wonder, and get that thing built. It will provide power on an entire continent for you, and you won't need to run around polluting everything with Hydro/Nuke/Coal

You still get 2 :yuck: from the TGD in all cities, just like you had Hydro Plants everywhere. It doesn't even matter if a city doesn't have a factory (no production bonus).

do you get multiple bonuses from resources?
If I have two cows pastures do I get +2 health, or will I just get +1H regardless of how many cow pastures I get?

The latter. Though you can trade your second cow resource away to get one that you don't already have, this way you can (in a way) still get additional health from it. ;)

how far can culture spread from city? is there a limit? or I could have 1 city and keep growing my borders endlessly by raising my culture? is there a limit to the expansion?

ok. does it mean if I have 1 pasture and trade it I will loose my +1H and gain the resource I've traded? while if I have 2+ pastures I will still keep my +1H benefit.

You do not trade the improvements, you trade the resource you get from them, the tile yield stays the same.

Resource

1. basic tile yield - only if the tile is worked by a city (+1 hammer cow)
2. improvement tile yield - only if the tile is worked by a city (+2 food +1 hammer cow)

1 and 2 are never lost, even if you trade them all away. They help cities generate more food, hammers or commerce.

3. the resource benefit - health, happy, or tactical to enable units
Only one is needed in your entire kingdom to get the benefit in all cities. Extra resources (3 cows) do not provide anything, you can trade them for other resources or keep them as backup in case you get pillaged.

Ignore the yield display in the city screen next to the resource (when hovering the mouse).

A city's borders expand until it reaches legendary status.
On normal the borders expand when the city reaches 10, 100, 500, 5000 and 50000 culture.

Ok, is there a criteria for the expansion? how many tiles for each level do you get? (10, 100, 500, 5000 and 50000 culture)

One tile in all directions every time.

Why do some people settle right on top of a resource? Does it automatically give you the resource?

Why do some people settle right on top of a resource? Does it automatically give you the resource?

  1. Yes, it provides automatic access to the resource without having to wait for an improvement to be built.
  2. It makes the resource nearly pillage-proof, as the city would have to be captured to pillage the resource.
  3. Some resources provide mediocre yields when worked; if a city would be in a better position by being founded on top of one of these resources, then it should be.
Some resources that fall into the latter category (in my opinion) include wine, ivory, furs, incense, and silk. I don't recommend settling on top of food resources as you miss out on the full benefit of the food surplus, and food is king in this game.

Likewise, I try to avoid settling on top of high-commerce resources (gold, gems, silver, dye) as these are better worked for the commerce yield. (I make an exception for incense as it's usually located on desert tiles; as such, it's usually in a low-food area that makes it difficult to work that tile, which provides nothing but commerce as a yield.)

Finally, while many players will settle on top of production resources (iron, copper, horses, stone, marble) for the reasons listed above, you will miss out on some of the hammers normally produced by that tile, so make your decision carefully: are you in a high-risk area where you need that resource to be pillage-proof?

How can you play user-created maps in an online game with someone?

If you put the map in the "public maps" folder (Default location C/:Users/Docuents/My Games/BeyondTheSword/PublicMaps) You should be able to host said map in the MP Lobby.

Still kickin around a Warlords (the Expansion no the difficulty level) game. Already won, but having some fun after it's all over. With it being just the Warlords expansion its still running the "basic" espionage system.

My question is once you put up the funds and successfully "steal plans" using your spy all units of the target civ are revealed. Is that a one shot deal, or does it continue to update over a period of time. It's a fairly pricey item with low odds of success, so I wasn't sure if it would update for a while, or just the one shot.

Thanks
