Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I presume this was from a random event, granting a production bonus to a tile?
Jade is actually a +2 commerce bonus for the plot. Tin is the +2 production.

I'll point out for the one who asked that this, like all plot yields, is only given to you if you actually work the plot with a citizen of a city.

This is correct. The disc check is removed from the latest expansion - Beyond the Sword - but not normal Civ4 or Warlords. So if for some reason you want to revert to the earlier versions, you'll either need the discs or some alternative way of getting around the disc check. And I don't recall ever being required to verify anything online during installation with any of the games.

Wow thanks! Is there any other SM:C games that have little DRM?

It's been a long time so I can't recall, but I presume the earlier versions (3, 2, 1) are not likely to have more DRM than 4 at this point. I think Civ3 Conquests' final patch version doesn't require the disc either, but I can't quite remember.

Hi,
I am new to CIV-4, i play age of empires & i am good in that. i started civ4 with a 2nd level difficulty, but always loose the game as my opponent gets powerful military units. I am not able to research or reach to full military strength. i wonder why there is no record game option enabled in this game. the tutorials are not useful to win the game. reading the docs, not helping much. are there any SAVED games which i can replay (not sure) and learn? Please help.

Welcome to CFC!

A good friend of mine who plays AofE acknowledged that Civ is much more complicated. Even if your opponent has a more powerful military, you might still be able to leverage diplomacy to keep him/her from attacking you. Give in to their requests/demands, share their religion, fight a war with them... these are all ways to keep a powerful rival happy.

The Civ IV tutorial is designed to just show you the basics of the interface and not much more. The manual doesn't go much further than that either. Have you checked out the articles in the War Academy at this site? Including mine? :D You could also try playing some of my ALC games (or some of the many other play-along games in the Strategy forum) and compare how you do. Also search YouTube for some excellent videos on how to play. And have fun!

Saved games won't help you, unfortunately, because a lot of the things that goes on in the game is pretty random. You will note this if you play AoE with 8 players and all start off as rivals. Each time you play through the same game (by loading a save, for example), you will note that the allies and enemies would be different during the game.

One way to learn is to start a game. Take a screenshot of your initial start before you move any units or issue any commands. Post it together with the game save here (not sure in this particular forum, maybe in the Tips and Strategies forum). Then, write out a quick summary of what you see and why you think it is important, paying particular attention to where you intend to settle your first city. What technologies to research first and what you intend to build first in your city are also important points.

People will post their suggestions and also correct any mistaken assumptions you might have made. Then, make your decision based on that, and play a few turns (20-50, depending on whether anything significant happened). Repeat the above steps of taking a screenhot, posting it and the saved game, and writing a short spiel of what you did and why, and what you intend to do and why.

Keep repeating every few turns until you win the game.

That is like saying that a photo copying machine is more complicated than a paper clip, Sisiu... :D
 Granted, but having never played AofE myself, I didn't wanna come out swingin', if ya catch my drift. ;)

You should. Great game. Still have it on my comp and play it (well, AoE2: Conquerors, anyway) with friends when we get the chance.

I've recently picked up AofE too. Got bored within a week, but the same thing happened to me with civ. And I love civ now :D It does look good though and great to play with others.

Is there an easy way to tell which AI are working on building a world wonder? Directly? I can infer whether an AI might be starting a wonder, if it knows the proper tech, but that's indirect.

Civ3 had a screen where it showed that an AI had started work on a world wonder, but you had to actually investigate the city to see its progress. I would budget my espionage points differently if I knew who my competition is, say, in building the Apostolic Palace.

The only way to find this out in Civ IV that I'm aware of is to budget your espionage points in the first place--that is, you'd need to build up enough EPs to see what your opponents are building in their cities. That's a lot of EPs. It might be doable if you build the Great Wall and generate a Great Spy; an infiltration mission would give you enough EPs versus one civ at least, or settling the GSpy might give you enough EPs over time, depending on how many opponents you're facing.

I understand that the AI's attitude towards you is a combination of how they feel about you as an individual nation as well as how the feel about your vassal, but do they care what their own vassals think of you e.g. I have no vassals, Shaka is the master of Huyana Capac. Shaka is pleased with me, but Huyana Capac considers me his worst enemy. Does that lower Shaka's true disposition towards me?

In the case of Shaka it won't matter how he feels about you. He'll go to war if he thinks you're the second coming of his Zulu religion's Messiah. Shaka's a f'ing psycho. I should know because I'm playing as Shaka right now, and I feel the psycho vibe--it serves me well.

As for vassal attitude and their effects, there can be indirect effects such as requests to cut off trade, etc. It can make a friendly AI act more non-friendly without actually lowering diplo points. The diplo points themselves shouldn't be affected though, IIRC.

Nah, go ahead and tell Huayna Capac you're not going to give him your horses and then tell him what he could use a horse for anyway. Shaka doesn't care if you relentlessly aggravate his vassal. Huayna Capac's attitude is a non-factor.

As Skallagrimson said, however, Shaka is a psycho. If he's not Friendly he's liable to attack you simply for breathing. With Shaka it isn't a case of will he attack you, it's when.

IMO Shaka is the most dangerous AI and, I agree, he plays well as a warmonger in human hands as well. Aggressive with low-cost UB to control city maintenance.

is there any way to build monastery after scientific method?

No, apart from using World Builder.

You can still create missionaries though if you run Organized Religion.
Speaking of Monasteries and SM, I can't remember. Do you still get the culture from the Monastery after getting SM?

And double the normal culture if it's the AP religion yes.

For tight culture borders it's still worthwhile to get 'em built a few turns before SM, they're almost like a theater in that way.
